In the 70's there was an American movie Sandpit Captains based on the Amado book (Captains of the Sand). I finished it, on google play books. It's a fun fast read. It has elements of surreal magical realism as in that marques book we read, as in the last third when it seems a man comes back to life or maybe it is his 4 drinking buddies lead by a corporal who dress him in his old clothes, steal his dress shoes (what does a dead man need new shoes for?
