OK so what's your superhero origin story that would explain why being equipped with a knife designed to cut boxes puts you at an advantage over 5 dudes with potentially better weapons? Because the ability to refrain from drugs and alcohol is great, don't get me wrong, but it's not enough. And no amount of studying foreign cultures is going to help you out of that situation either.

The situation in question did not involve a robbery. It was just a group of guys who threw something at someone after he turned his back and then gave themselves up by laughing. But I can't say that changes my stance very much. If you're getting robbed by a group, shit there goes your money. If you pull out a knife on them, shit, there goes your life. At least one of them will probably have a knife that was made to cut more than cardboard but even if not you're still fucked. You'd need something with reach like a bat or a golf club if you want any hope of taking on a group. Again, not saying that's a good idea. I would agree that it sounds like some of us may have seen too many action movies.

Great idea for sure. Not sure about Colombian law. You may have a right to self defense. But I'm willing to be that defending yourself in that way would get you a very long sentence, or the shorter version where you never leave.

When they get drunk, Colombian guys are the worst guys on the earth I've ever seen. And the difference between how they act when they are alone and when they form a clique, is amazing. (Almost) two centuries of violent history of Colombia is not surprising at all.

I went to santa fe around 10 pm. It was my first time in the night time scene for a long time. Usually I go in the afternoon. Lots of people around. Night time brings out the worst in people. Drunk and stupid. I was standing against a building and just checking out some chicas across the street. This was about 3 or 4 buildings south of the eastern entrance to Troya. There was a group of 4 or 5 guys standing about 10 to 15 feet away from me. They were facing me and yelling some stuff out. I didn't understand what they were saying. My spanish isn't good enough to pick things up unless I am consciously making effort to understand. I thought they were yelling some stuff out to someone further down the street. I stood there for a couple minutes looking at the girls across the street before turning south away from the group of men to walk away. I walked about 20 feet and I felt something hard hit me in my upper back close to the left side of my neck. At first I thought someone had dropped something from a window above. I looked up and saw nothing. I looked at the ground to try to figure out what it was, but there was nothing obvious. Nothing behind me either. I looked back at the group of guys who were trying to hold back giggles and laughter. I can only conclude that they had thrown something at me. It was something hard. It very well could have hit me in the back of my head. Who knows. I didn't make a big deal of it, but it definitely shook me up. I don't know why someone would do that. I try to mind my own business and not bother anyone, but even if you do that, stupid people will always be stupid.

This is just a warning to never let your guard down in Santa Fe. Its when you start to feel comfortable that something bad will happen. Things are starting to get busier and the stupid people are coming back.

Holy fuck. Yeah this is great advice if you think standing up to drunk hooligans is worth your life. I've had my share of scraps in my city, even with people much bigger than me who I had no business fighting with, but in a foreign country I will always put my safety before my ego. I'm not ashamed to admit I have allowed myself to be bullied by children while traveling just because of the unpredictability of it all. Their older brothers who like stabbing gringos could be right around the corner. There's just too many sketchy variables when you're away from home. It's not worth it. My dude did the right thing by walking it off. Even if he successfully stood up for himself, he then has to watch his back twice as much when he goes to Santa Fe.

Cash app is littered with scams and clones. I've had many girls ask me to send money to them on cash app, I never send money to girls I have never met so these request always go unanswered. I have never opened a cash app but all of a sudden I received a cash app card in the mail and a short time later my bank texted me asking if I had authorized a 740 dollar cash app withdrawal from my account. Of course I called them immediately to stop it. I contacted cash app and explained to them I never opened the card, don't want it and to cancel it NOW. Long story short, 6 months later and dozens of email later they finally agreed to cancel the account. Since then I have read scores of stories and nightmares about cash app. Stay away.
