I am sure you know what you are talking about if you traveled much in Asia. I speak a bit of Chinese, enough to negotiate on the street, but impossible on the phone and no writing capabilities. But, I do remember coming to Taiwan in the mid and later 80's, and it was just so irresistable and obvious everywhere with those "slanted" vertical spiralling barber shop poles, letting you know that the service inside was not just a haircut but "slanted," meaning everything / anything goes, and the women were not "tame. " Language was inconsequential, and the universal "nod" was all you needed, and some cash.

But, you are right in that in today's electronic world, communication in a native tongue becomes a very important tool.
