Once again, I do apologize if I offended anyone who has previously engaged in paid copulation with what is left on the streets.

There are some more previously mentioned joints opened on Soi 11, Soi Biergarten, Soi Nana, Soi 15 (but you will be staring at an empty Hooters), Soi Maxim Inn, and a couple of street bars near that narrow metal wall on Sukhumvit between 9 and 7/1.

But everything comes with the danger of getting popped by the police. And if you don't think these Thais are working right along with the po-po, waiting for that right belligerent drunk foreign dummy with deep pockets, then think again. It's like one big mafia family up and down Sukhumvit with the vendors, businesses, hookers, motorcycle taxis, and cops. But feel free to do what I do and take my advice. Go on Lazada and buy you some food grade ethyl alcohol (ethanol). Yes, the same stuff some hand sanitizers are made of. Just make sure it's food grade which is another name for grain alcohol. Fill up a small spray bottle with the stuff and carry it around everywhere you go. Order a Coke Zero or OJ, and squirt some of that 190 proof hand sanitizer in your drink. The police cannot get you for carrying hand sanitizer nor can they penalize a bar for selling or giving away hand sanitizer, and then selling expensive mixes, sodas, and juice. I remember in Pattaya they said no music was allowed at eateries. So on Buakhao, they just told the truck selling hats to hook up loud speakers and jam it loudly so everybody can hear some music. Every problem has a solution or a way around it, just need to use that brain.

Lastly, I need to take time to thank another member on here Khundig. The sidelines info and websites have been a fucking gold mine! If you want the open back-alley places, check out Soi 7/1.

Personally, I would avoid hanging out in illegal drinking venues or on-site brothels, since there's a real chance of being caught in a police raid. These are not normal relaxed times, there might be embarrassment and consequences. Better to just pull a girl and enjoy her in the safety and privacy of your hotel.

I don't disagree with you about bars that are open and selling alcohol. Everyone has their own level of risk so must decide for themselves because yes the bars selling alcohol are illegal right now. With that said there are more bars opening every day and it's getting pretty much in your face. They're not even trying to hide it anymore. I won't name bars but if you walk down Soi 8 or 11 you will easily find a place to drink.

Was wondering if the Thermae bar was unofficially open as well. I've never been there, but from what I'm reading it sounds like an interesting place to visit. I believe its in a basement of the hotel I am staying, sounds like a bit of a hidden spot that might be able to open its doors secretly.

From what I have heard there is a "Councilwoman", so to speak, overseeing the lower Sukhumvit area district who determines whether a venue is mostly a bar or a restaurant even if the owner has a license for both. And one of the determining factors she uses is whether the place has tables and chairs, not just a bar, on which to serve (non alcohol) drinks and food. Perhaps she even factors in how much of the serving area is a bar vs tables and chairs. For instance, a place like The Tavern on Soi 4 has not been able to reopen as a restaurant all this time even though the owner has a license for it because it only has a bar on which to sit to eat and drink, no tables and chairs. Therefore, it is only classified as a bar. And setting up a couple of small tables right outside the door apparently doesn't cut it either.

However, that doesn't explain why a place like Thermae, which has plenty of booths and tables with chairs to make a case for it being as much of a restaurant as a bar has not pushed for reopening. Maybe they just don't want to hassle with the idea of focusing on food service rather than their usual conveyor belt with a meat hook approach to sending you immediately to their drink bar to buy a drink as you walk in the door. And it would be very difficult for the bartenders in that spot to pretend they are only pouring sodas, coffee and tea into paper cups instead of booze before you stroll over to the bar to just stand there drinking it. On the other hand, a similarly designed bar and table venue like Beer Garden Soi 7 apparently is willing to focus on their identity as a restaurant at this time.

Great location, you'll find plenty of freelancers right in front, even if Thermae isn't open. In fact, it's probably the hottest spot in the otherwise dead Sukhumvit during the pandemic and lockdowns (or at least it was for a while, I didn't go for a few months). Of course "plenty" is relative, the lockdown scene is a shadow of its former self.

One advantage of the crisis is that you can probably pull anyone for 1000 baht ST or even less (I've been propositioned for 500, persistently). They might ask for more, but will agree for sure if you offer 1000, especially since you have a place nearby. You can probably get some great LT deals too, with the 10 pm curfew in place. There's a fair proportion of ladyboys in front of Thermae (they're more persistent than girls), and girls there are not my cup of tea, but times are tough, it is what it is.

Thermae is large and possibly the most famous freelancer bar in Bangkok, not at all some back-alley secret place. I don't think it's likely to open illegally, bribes to do that would have be enormous. If you want the open back-alley places, check out Soi 7/1.

Take the Sheraton Sukhumvit since you mentioned it: I have a 6 night no pre payment, fully cancellable booking with them for a deluxe room in March, 2022 for $100 per night. I could have booked same room, same hotel for $65 per night with a prepared no cancelation booking, but I am not sure the kingdom will be open in March and I am not willing to bet on it.

My point is simply that the hotel must be nearly empty for management to offer these kind of prices. I hope I will be allowed to go in March, But I don't care. I am in SP now. It is my 2nd visit this year. I am having a rollicking good time. I miss BKK for sure, but I am doing fine.
