These are great reports. I have never been to Rio, but it is in my plans for the fall. From all the reading I have done, it looks like maybe the Hilton Copa, with visits to MAB, Eden Spa, Dolce Vita, Termas TMC, and the centro daytime massage places will be my plan. I think the specific note of someone's skin color to be characterized as african american is a bit much since it's really the cultural that makes you more part of a group. Like previously mentioned of how latin kids who were born and lived a few years in their respective country and moved to the US and completely assimilated to the western way of life. They have latin / south american citizenships, brown skin yet they are distinctly westernized and you'd could easy spot the difference between the two under a minute. I know many white Christian missionaries who have moved to latin / south america and have raised a white family who are more hispanic than hispanics in the US.

The term african american originated during the slave trade when african people with african names that spoke african languages were shipped out to the americans and that's why it's so odd when people use it to define black americans as that link has long since gone and been replaced with anglo names and english speaking people.

In the usage I understand here in the United States, African-American is used like Irish-American or Italian-American. They are simply ethnicities. The same is true with Latin-American. Jennifer Lopez is Latin-American.

Not to get all historically correct, but I don't think slaves were deemed "Americans" by the people and States holding them in slavery. I don't even think there children were considered true Americans.

It is interesting. Some of my friends who are first generation Latin are basically white just because of how they grew up. Some of them actually tried so hard to assimilate because they didn't want / like the attention and didn't want to get made fun of growing up. Now they look back and wish they wouldn't have cared as much and and show a lot of pride for their heritage. The one I'm talking about specifically was even born there and came to the US and a small child.

I knew a few who's parents actively didn't speak to them in Spanish so they would learn English as their primary language. And yea you would be made fun of, I recalled kids being sent to ESOL classes and treated a bit different. Their parents wanted them to get the best education they never had and ESOL classes really hampered that so I can understand their reasoning. It sucks because knowing spanish is really key and vital in a few states and will be more in demand as they hispanic population in the US keeps growing.

I actually went out with a peruvian girl who immigrated here when she was 8 and now she is 24 and is a "No Sabo" kid which is a term for latin kids who don't know any spanish. She actually had a valley girl accent which made it even more funny.

It's the taco bell effect. It keeps some elements of the roots but has been completely molded to western standards.

I guess the more appropriate term would be Anglicisation but layman's term of gringo by the brazilian works too as they don't pussyfoot around as you can tell from the lyrics from their funk music.

Don't know why people would be offended to be called gringo when they have a anglo sounding name and speaks the king's english.

Yesterday was my second day in Rio. Slept in pretty hard and caught a ride to Gringo Cafe for breakfast (I know I know, but I wanted a large breakfast, okay). I sat there for awhile after finishing my food then walked the blocks surrounding it. There were a lot of people and music on the street. Probably because it was Saturday. It's purely a cultural thing. I grew up with McDonald's, Charlie Brown, Norman Rockwell, PBS, watching 9/11 live, Saturday morning cartoons and the like while those born south of the border grew up with a completely different cultural Perspective.

It's actually interesting seeing the 1st generation Latin kids in the USA not being able to speak Spanish.

A lot of them have never even seen their parents home country.

Didn't even take a generation to get the new kids on the block westernized or become gringos as many Latin people would say.

Makes me think how the word African American is really arbitrary since the cultural link between a black person born in Africa and one born in the US has long since been gone.

Also the fact that Elon Musk would fall under that category while usain bolt would not.

All these posts about the terminology that Brasilians use to describe people by their color reminded me about how angry I would get when they described me.

When I first strated going to Brasil in the mid 90's, I remember being EXTREMELY offended at being called a "Gringo" by the Brasilians. There were multiple times I would spin around and yell "I am not a fucking Gringo!! Don't call me that!" Mentally, I had associated the word Gringo with the people who "Who murdered indigenous people, raped their women, enslaved their men and pillaged their resources!" I would say "My people didn't do those things to you, don't ever call me a gringo, that's offensive!" and the brasilians would look at me like I had 3 heads and try to explain what the word meant to them.

No matter how many times they tried to explain to me that Gringo didn't mean the same thing to them as the historical reference that it meant in the US, I wasn't trying to hear it. It took a much older American who saw me flip out one afternoon to pull me to the side and explain that it didn't matter if I was Japanese or French, I was still a gringo to the Brasilians because I wasn't from Brasil. Once I let me anger subside and actually fucking listened, I finally understood the significance of the word.

I have seen this scenario play out countless times where a black men will get angry and say "don't call me a gringo" to a Brasilian and now I am the old guy who explain the difference between their definition of the word and ours. LOL! What's strange is that even though I mentally understand what the term means, I still feel a twinge of uneasiness every time I am called that and have to remind myself to not get upset. (Takes a long time for an old dog to learn new tricks).
