This happened in Cascadura (close to Madureira) Zona Norte. The gringo stayed at the home of a friend. He got shot when he rose to pick up the TV remote control. Unlucky guy. Brazilians in general are quick to hit the floor when there is a shootout.

I chip in regarding TIM versus Vivo. If you only stay in Rio both will work fine. In some areas, like comunidades, TIM works much better. If you travel around Brazil the difference between TIM and Vivo can be very significant. I always use TIM, mainly because I like their priceworthy offers. BTW, no need to go to Central to buy a sim card. Just go to a Lojas Americanas or buy it in a kiosk.

You will get a Vivo Sim in the Vivo shop near Metro Carioca, it's in the shopping complex in which Bob's fast food is in. Very helpful lady. You need your passport and be aware that the SIM expires after your agreed period.

Dears, thank you for sharing your stories and giving your advises along the way.

I am 100% sure that she is not telling stories and that she got pregnant from me.
