Walk at the end of the parking or outside the airport to catch a taxi or private Car there.

Street Hooker are everywhere around the rue independence, around sole hotel and The fire department. Especially from evening On.

As long as its not completely dark you will be fine.

I understand your situation: you are eager to go. But no flights because you missed to book early enough and not want to get your ass flat in a cramped taxi brousse.

My French is not fluent but good enough to ask people and to get infos from the locals, not from the "friend taxidriver" who is your friend because you are now his ATM (as the living pirate La Buse said correctly!

I had to do an urgent trip back from Tulear to Tana in an empty "taxi" which brought tourists down and now wanted to drive back empty (but for sure the gasoline already paid from the earlier guests). He was utterly happy with some pocket money to have me as passenger. And I was happy to have a cheap seat: win win situation!

And there are many "lemour tourists" nowadays taking a private car one way. However, if you just want to go straight to Tulear or Diego. Book a flight early: 2 or 3 months ahead. It saves you a lot of backpain.

They ripped you off big time. For a fluent french speaker you don't seem to have a clue how things in subsaharan Africa work. Everybody is your friend because you're their ATM. Your taxi "friend" is waiting for you to rip you off big time AGAIN.

Did you ever take a taxi brousse? Did you ever take a taxi overland? I assume your infos all are by hearsay. No personal experience. Don't confuse people here.

Yes, there had been hold ups years ago at night of taxi brousse. But that is over since long. Even at that time nothing at daytime. Meanwhile the traffic is much heavier and many trucks using the roads. They communicate with each other IF there is any weird situation.

Yes, most of the main roads like RN 5 or RN 7 are in a poor state: some streches need total repair, some bridges broken and then the road passes through a stream. But if you not only go to Mada for cheap fucking but to visit the national parks then you need to use the roads. Just take it easy.

Cotisse is a reasonable company for land transport. Meanwhile also Sonatra starts a premium service and some other small companies like Transmalala (www.transmalala.mg). For a trip by Taxi brousse make sure that you get a Merc Sprinter and not one of the small Hitachi Vans. Take the seat by the door in front, not the middle seat: your balls will be boiled because you sit on the engine. Prices to Fianar 35.000 AR. Fianar is a nice village for a 1 day stop with an interesting night life. From there to Tulear 40.000 AR. Each part takes 12 hours! Be prepared.

If you take a private car it does not cost you 500. -$ to Tulear. Or you prove that you are a vahaza ridicule! A typical price is between 40 to 60 $ per day for the car with driver plus the gasoline. 250. -$ to 300. -$ is a fair offer with stops at the various parks on the way. If you share with a friend its the way to go. Same refers to the way north to Diego.

Since Tsaradia got a new management, the company is as good as an airline in an African country can be. If you book on internet early you pay about 500.000 to 600.000 AR to the various destinations. Giving them your Mada telephone number and you will get updates if there are changes in the timing. You also can change your flight for a little fee. I took with them 4 domestric flights lately: all on time and without any incidents. But the few flights get quickly booked. Last day booking and you may not get any seat.

Mada is developing. Building industry is booming. Expect many changes in coming years.
