2 AM they decided to go home and took a taxi in front of HK to the border. They wanted to drink more, so the cabbie suggested they go to a liquor store. All 4, guys and girls, were made to get out of the cab, spread eagle and searched. They were robbed of all their money, $800-900. Meanwhile the cabbie was not charged. Policias left them $5 to pay the cabbie to drive back to the border.

In this case it was obvious the cabbie set them up with his policias buddies for a quick rob. They could have been in far worse situation, planted drugs, kidnapped, raped, tortured, extorted for more money, if the criminals think they are rich and can pay big ransoms.

There are a lot of evils lurking in drug cartels' border towns, including any random cabbies, waiting to victimize the unsuspecting. A lot of local people can hardly scratch out a living in Tijuana, may have ties to drug cartels, and will turn to crime when having opportunities. In the past Tijuana cabbies have staged large demos, blocking roads and traffic in downtown. There are now reports cabbies in Cancun are harassing, blocking, beating up UBER drivers and riders. Tijuana cabbies will be assaulting UBER and LYFT drivers soon.

Safer to take UBER or HK's limousines. Only ride with known reliable people.

Not sure what universe where they thought drinking alcohol as passengers in a taxi in a foreign country where they don't know the laws was a good idea. They may have been "set up" but technically they were guilty as accused of drinking alcohol in the vehicle so put themselves in that situation. But the story overall sounds suspect. Are there liquor stores even open past 2 am in Tijuana? I thought alcohol sales shut down no later than midnight outside of clubs? What liquor store in El Centro sells packs of beers after hours? I'll make sure to stop by on my next trip if you know the name or location of the place.

But potential situations like this are one of the reasons why I'm hesitant to engage with anyone in Tijuana other than the chicas. Some random dude I was chatting with briefly in HK a couple years ago invited me to go to some other club he was about to head to that night to try and pick up some women. I'm like this guy barely knows me so why would he invite me out and why would we need to go to some other club to pick up women when we're already here in an HK club beyond packed with chicas?
