WILLEMSTAD. The former open-air brothel Campo Alegre has become 'Campo Landfill', according to reporters from a morning newspaper.

The site is not closed and many people take this opportunity to dump their waste. It is still unknown what will happen to Campo. Last year, the auction of the site was postponed twice. According to the Public Prosecution Service, there would be no candidates who meet the conditions. No new date has yet been announced for the auction.

I have been to Curacao scuba diving for over 20 yrs but with Campo closed, no reason to come visit. I just imaging other mongers who now take a pass on visiting Curacao. Costing the island much business. I wonder how much hotel business they lose with Campo closed.

I also don't go back to Curacao if Campo is closed. For the beach to Mexico, e. G. Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and for girls also Mexico, Tijuana (Zona Norte) where it is more expensive and not as tropical and picturesque as Curacao and Campo.

My opinion, if Campo is closed, prostitution will not disappear. Now the situation is that prostitution is unregulated all over the island. Prostitutes are not STD tested and clients are exposed to robbery and STDs and used condoms everywhere. Campo was a great idea regulated prostitution in a very remote place in one place, regular STD checks by sex workers and security for clients and sex workers.

I agree it's done. They want too much money to open to even be able to bid on it. It's a shame I'd have went and vacationed there.

I found this searching the sale of Campo.

The reason for the auction is a confiscation order by the court. Millions that came from the underworld would have been laundered by investing in the property. The auction must raise enough to pay a judicially imposed fine of some 14.9 million Netherlands Antillean guilders, with proceeds to go to the Crime Prevention Fund.

The price comes with the permits to run the brothel. That's it. That's what someone is paying for. Exclusivity to run the place as a brothel.

Whoever wants it has to pay all cash. Banks down here in the ABC islands will not finance campo or pachis because they don't want to be associated with what the mainstream local business culture considers a 'dirty' business.
