The Colombians that do business with gringos probably are doing well, like real estate agents, lawyers, accountants, doctors. I think these are not average Colombian.

Before COVID it was about 3 K to 1 USD, it went to 5 K, then 4 K now. For average locals that monger in Centro. The rate went from 30 K to 40 K. A cup of coffee that used to be 200 is 500 now. The dinner from the street stand was 4 k, but it is 6 K now. Phone bill is also higher. I don't know how much raise the locals get. Unless they work for gringo, I guess they are not better off. My local friend was complaining about construction material cost has increased significantly higher, and their kid was surprised to learn that the properties are much higher to afford one now.

The average local is definitely struggling right now. I can see the desperation in people's faces when I walk around el centro or take public transit.

I agree with you. And how I have resolved the problem is I have a driver of a white taxi with the official markings that only makes airport runs. The last time I left Medellin for MDE he arrived 45 minutes early and waited patiently for me to come down. We then had a lively conversation about many aspects of Colombia on the way to the airport. I arrived at the airport. He helped me with my bag. Told me the charge was 90000 COP. I gave him a 100000 COP note. He thanked me for the gift. I don't understand how it's a scam. The banks give you a choice of accepting or declining their conversion rate. Every ATM I've been to in Medellin that charges a fee gives you that information before your transaction is completed. The user has the option to cancel the transaction. I traveled to the Far East before the pandemic and many ATM's there were offering their own conversion rate.

I defer to your extensive world travel experiences. In the last ten years, I have only traveled between the Dominican Republic and the (Dis) United States of America. When you accept the the ATM conversion rate in the Dominican Republic you get the same rate as my bank gives me. 200 basis points less than the institutional rate. There are two rates that are used for exchange, the institutional rate and the retail rate. My bank has consistently given me a rate in between the retail rate and the institutional rate. I will decline the conversion rate here in the Dominican Republic and will see what happens.

The official rate is the same 24 hours a day. You should show those drivers who are asking for 120 mil the sign outside the departure doors. The next time I arrive at MDE, I'll try to remember to take a photo of the sign and post it here.

You are confusing the AVERAGE and MINIMUM salaries. In 2023, the average salary in Colombia is about 1000-1100 USD / month. The minimum salary is about $300 USD (1. 3 million COP). In the US, the minimum salary varies in each state, from about 7. 25 USD / HR to 15-16 USD / HR (in very few states, like DC or California). $7. 25 at 40 hrs a week is "whopping" 1160 USD / month.

You don't pay a Colombian girl $1100 to spend the night. You pay her $100 USD on average, maybe a bit more depending on how hot she is. Thats 1/10 of the average salary.
