But this page has taught me that the police are more of a concern than the girl in this location.

When I made my plans, older posts led me to believe that Big Tree was where I want to stay, so I immediately reserved a room for my entire three week stay. 28 euros per night to stay on the beach seems better than other places in this beach area. I started the process of talking to girls on dating sites. It's obvious that some are working girls, and when I tell them where I'm staying they all comment that the rooms and facilities there suck. Most insist I should have gone the Airbnb route. Airbnb shows some great apartments in south mtwapa which would be nice because ID like to visit the clubs there.

I'm still convinced though that Big Tree was a good choice. I guess my only concern would be that I want to visit the mtwapa clubs during the night time. If I decide to make mtwapa a nightly visit and use an app like Uber to get a motortaxi, is it reasonable to assume that I won't have any issues in the night time coming back and forth at late hours?
If I am in Big Tree, I go to Casourina in Mwtapa almost every night. I usually walked to Cheers and took taxi there. In front of Casourina there are always taxis ready to take you back to the Big Tree, they are fighting about you. So no worry. Big Tree has a regural taxi driver, Peter, not working for Big Tree but he is there in daytime and evening waiting for customers. Not at late night. You can make deal with him to take you there and back, or somewhere else. He knows all the places, and he is big guy, he can be considered as security guy also. Also taxi drivers in the Cheers, in walking distance, you can hire them to take you there and come to pick you, or even wait for you whole evening. Take their numbers. Just. If they say they are coming, they are on a way. That is not necessarily true, they may be far far away, they just don't want to lose your ride. Don't believe, take another taxi or motobike.

Uber is cheaper but I don't use myself. Motobike is cheaper, and faster, and you can get them everywhere immediately. I use them a lot, but I am always scared for my life in motobike, because of traffic.

I use bolt instead of uber. Use a car and not a bike, bikes are just too dangerous. Big Tree to Mtwapa in a bolt will only be a few euros.

Big Tree is ok. The rooms are basic but as you say you are on the beach. I stay on the beach myself when in Mombasa.

Police can not really bother unless you do something stupid. Even if your upset with a girl, just pay her and get rid of her, it is not worth any hassle for a few thousand shillings. Carry your ID its a Police favourite for a little shake down attempt if you do not have it.

Strange, I'm in your same condition but reading this forum gave me the opposite impression: stay in Mtwapa and visit Bamburi during the day. Can't you cancel?

Don't underestimate the ladies. Many will steal given the chance. As for late night travel from Mtwapa to Bamburi there's the famous police check point on Mtwapa bridge where police will shake you down for a bribe. Take at least a copy of your passport. Although the interior secretary said that he wants to get rid of all police checkpoints. Make sure the girl carries an ID. Big Tree is for sure the cheapest place on North coast right on the sea. The rooms are renovated but basic. There's is always some girls for take out. In the evening. Be aware that there's a number of bad apples on North coast. They're working together with Bamburis finest. The police is just across the road from Cheers. They will try to nail you for some imaginative offences. Sex with minors is popular. Use of Sex Toys or taking nasty videos is no good idea. They fall under the sexual offences law. Fake or no IDs are very common. Drink spiking also goes on. Always take your beer with you to the loo. Smoking banghi is illegal.

    I think that covered most.

    Mwalimu.

Prestige Leisure Apartments have been mentioned as GF but google only throws up Prestige Leisure Hotel- is this the same place? Also would appreciate a recommendation for a GF Airbnb, its hard to tell from listings as some places have staff living in compounds and may not be GF and I don't want to find that out after booking and paying for several nights. I.

Some sharing of info after 2 weeks trip to Bamburi, first time.

Not being a nightowl, to visit the clubs mentioned, I had very good expirience using Tinder. First meeting usully in a cafe or other public space.

My favourite restaurant in Bamburi beach was CharChoma, because of very good barbecue, good location and reasonable prices. Few freelancers there to be found in the evening.

Safari-Inn also had good talent on Tuesdays and Fridays evenings; also good place to meet some expats.

BigTree beach bar also a reasonable place to find a girl, afternoon or early evening.

Had my girl with me on safari, to Tsavo-East and West. West was very good, probably will go there again. Recommended lodge: saltlick. Very good location, rooms and meals. Next time I will do booking directly with them, they offer very good package for 2 nights, incl. Train and transfer and entrance fee. Definitely cheaper than via agency. Check their website saltlick safari lodge DOT com.

Pc, thanks, great info on hotels in Mtwapa.

    I agree with Leblon.

Mtwapa is not for the average traveler or monger who does not know Africa. Far better off down Bamburi beach or Nyali. I would stay in Mtwapa myself if it was not a pain to travel down to Bamburi beach or City mall. I just need some fresh air and a bit of space away from the dusty hussle and bussle of Mtwapa. On top of that after 20 yrs of coming to Mombasa I get such good prices on Bamburi beach I just end up having a few trips up to Mtwapa month.

On my last trip in March 2023 I stay in a Airbnb just across the street from eagles nest I was charge 3000 per night if I stay longer she would have given me a discount I think her monthly rate was 60000 . Had no air con I only lasted 4 days had to get a place with air con. First time Visitors Mtwapa is the place to stay after you hit the ground you can look around and see what works for the best for you.
    Good information, Pcdilwj.

I would just like to comment about this first time visitor. Mwtapa is good place for first timer if he has already been in Africa or at least in developing countries. However, if this is first time outside Europe or USA, I recommend to take one of the hotels from Bamburi beach, and do visits to Mwtapa from there. Mwtapa has crazy traffic, it is hot and noisy and dusty. I remember one commentator who was shocked and bitter that he was recommended Mwtapa, town was too much for him.

In beach, climate is cooler, it is more peaceful and hotels are more developed. More expensive also. From Mwtapa it takes some effort and time to go beach.

There is new place in Mwtapa which people call as Screenshot. I don't know anything about that place but I have heard it is very popular right now, as new places are in beginning. Musungus go there, which means girls go there also. So if somebody is travelling to Mombasa you can add that to your list.

In Diani there has been already long time place called Full Moon. I don't remember that is ever mentioned here in Forum. So you can go to three places there, Manyatta, Tandoori, Full Moon. Ask from motobike taxidrivers which is right place to go in each evening and what time, they know everything in Diani.

Or a link to a "local" web site would be great.
If you want to find apartments for rent you can go to jiji. Co. Ke then select Property, then Houses for rent, then Mombasa, Bamburi.
