Generally Jakarta and Indonesia are very safe by American standards. The homicide rate per 100.000 is one of the lowest in the world. Below major European countries such as Germany or the UK. Crime-wise Jakarta is a lot safer than NYC. It looks shady, because in developed nations the state of disrepair of North Jakarta is associated with crime ridden neighborhoods.
