I did not see Sailing's orginial message (now deleted) but looking at Mike's quote, the reasons he stated for the crackdown seem a bit wide of the mark. This is a crackdown on foreign sex workers, but not on Japanese ones. Kawasaki and Yokohama (though not the foreign SW disctrict of Koganecho) are still going at full steam with SW of Japanese ethnicity. Mostly off limits to foreign customers, unfortunately.But I do agree it is a political issue rather than simply the policy of the local cops. I am not sure about the causes exactly, but I do know the United States government has been particularly critical of Japan over continued trafficking in sex workers. (Japan is at present desperately trying to show its credentials for a seat on the UN Security Council.) And I also know that nationalist figures like Tokyo Governor Ishihara deplore the recent higher levels of foreign participation in shadier types of activity in Japan.

It is not that the police have anything against them it is that the powers that be have been applying pressure to get these areas cleaned up for "regular businesses" and to try to clean up the image of these areas for the residents of these areas.

Ironically enough (I was thinking about this last night), when they DO that, they put literally HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of local love hotels, restaurants, bars and smaller shops at risk of bankruptcy. I'm in the last week of a Tokyo vacation, so I am indulging in a spurt of mongering, reports to follow. FYI, I am decent-looking, 28 years old, unmistakably foreign (blond hair/blue eyes), and though not fluent can usually get by with my Japanese with very little problem.I made a list of places from Tokyo pink guide and am hitting them one after another. I started yesterday with G-style in Shibuya. The play was exactly as depicted on their website, but I left feeling pretty disappointed. Although foreigners are ok, it seems the girls who will play with foreigners are fairly limited. After requesting several girls from the pictures and being told they don't service foreigners, I finally just asked them who does. The selection was less than optimal. I honestly couldn't find one I was attracted to, so I took their recommendation of the girl who gave great service. Her service actually was pretty good, but I just couldn't get into it since she wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe I picked the wrong time to go (early afternoon). Probably won't be going back.Next on the list was L/S, in the same building as G-Style. Again, many of the girls do not service gaijin, but at the least the website tells you which ones do or do not so you can plan in advance. Also, there are quite a few truly beautiful ones that are more than happy to provide for foreigners provided you can speak Japanese (at least well enough to make an appointment, choose your options, and make small talk with the girl). I took a nice little petite thing with tan skin and short dyed hair, very kogaru-ish. She was very friendly, and while she could have been a bit more enthusiastic with the service it still did the trick. The hot little body more than made up for any other deficiencies. I will definitely be going back to this place to sample some of the others. Just a note, some of the girls on the website do not say whether or not gaijin are ok. I asked about a few and was told no gaijin, so I guess if it does not say that they do, then they most likely don't. At least get a buddy to call for you...I am quite fluent, but sometime their phone Japanese is non-standard and you have to be ready for the unexpected question like-are you black or white etc...You could alayws take a chance and ask "eigo dekiru ko wa imasu ka?" (are there any girls who can speak english?). Koreans often know more than J-girls.
