That was what I did. I paid for 2000B cause my single voucher is for 2 nights. I did not know I will be asked to paid deposit at all and I was a bit amused by the request to paid deposit cause until then I have stayed in 3 different Hdy hotels before, none of them asked for deposit.

So I duly paid the girl and on the 2nd day when I give them another voucher for the third night, the reception did not ask for another 1000B as deposit. Not a big problem renewing the room every other day, but it does annoy me a bit here.

For example, if you are going to Hotel A for 4 nights, what I will do is change the voucher on a daily basis for 4 nights and just give them 1 vocuher. The next day, go to the reception and literally check out so that they have to do the paperwork. Immediately on completion of the paperwork, check in again. Show them the other 3 vouchers and ask them whether they want you to doi the check in and check out everyday or not.

I have paid cash deposit in Sakura GV. It was 1500B. I kept my passport inside the room's safebox.
It is up to the guest on which method is prefered.

Last year I went Regency and they did not take my passport nor any deposit. A month later I went again they asked for 1000B per night as deposit. Funny but perhaps they forgot about it the first time.

Also, 1000B per night is quite hefty cause what if I am staying there for 6 nights? Of course this can be easily settled by renewing the room every 1-2 days. that way we only pay 2000B as deposit and it is rolled over when we renew the room.

I had, in the pass for example, when giving the deposit to Sakura GV, paid 1,000 Baht although they asked for 1,500 Baht. I just said, !,000 Baht is enough and they accepted it.

There was once when I stayed in Novotel and they also wanted 1,000 Baht per night and I will be there for 3 nights so they wanted 3,000 Baht. My voucher was for 3 nights.

So I told them that I will only staying for a night and I will cancel the voucher and will get the travel agent to change my hotel for the 2nd & 3rd night. Then they told me that 1,000 Baht deposit is OK.

If there is any hotel that "quai lan" with you, and will not buldge, let me know and I'll arrange for you in such a way that the next time you go there, they will definitely comply.

The passport is held by the hotel as a security. You could alternatively have your credit card zapped, or put down cash deposit.

This practice is not only in Hatyai but in Hotels everywhere.

In fact, the hotels here would rather you have your credit card or cash deposit. There was a period where Sakura Hotel has a notice at the reception counter that they do not accpet Malaysian Passports as "deposit" as during that period, there were a lot of fake passports.
