I wasn't staying in El Cantil and I can't honestly remember the name of the place but I seem to recall that El Cantil was one of the places within walking distance. Didn't see anyone surfing but I recall hearing that surfing was not too far away. The place I was at was about 20 minutes by boat south of the town of Nuqui, where I flew into.

I you want to go back a few years, I think that just about anywhere in Colombia has its sordid history. After all, there was a car bomb placed in front of Orleans in Parque Lleras in Medellin a few years ago, and a grenade was thrown into one of my favorite bars in Bogota a few years ago as well (the Bogota Beer Company in the Zona Rose). And nobody thinks twice about visiting those places.

I always check with locals before going anyplace new, but don't get too worried about things that have happened in the past. Colombia is a fluid situation and changing all the time, as you well know. And for me, part of the fun is that touch of danger that makes life interesting.

As for porn, which someone else asked about, I don't know if it is legal or now, but SOHO ran an article about porn production in Bogota about a year ago. My guess is, it may not be legal, but obviously tolerated.

SL: Curious if the eco lodge you stayed at was El Cantil (about an hour south of Bahia Solano by boat)? The owner told me they have an armed security guard, but he also mentioned having a couple incidents with seafaring pirates/guerillas coming ashore although he said that had not happened in a few years. Did you see anybody surfing by chance?

Quibdo, as the capital of the Department, has a military garrison and, like most cities, is easier to control than the countryside. But I have heard and read of SEVERAL incidents on the coast, the most famous of which was the kidnapping of the director of the National Park (Ensenada de Utria). While the military may send patrols to Nuqui and bigger towns, the fact that Winner's extended family prevents him from going there says a lot (the locals are WAY more in touch with current security conditions than any outsider could hope to be).

On the Carib coast it seems they assume White folks who are not TOO obviously foreign are "Paisa", so why not in Choco too? LOL
