Archie,I feel safer in Tokyo than in any other big city in the world, bar none! There's only two things I would look out for. Kabuki-cho in Shinjuku can be fun, but there are a lot of rip off venues there, especially in the hostess bars. The 2nd is pick pockets. Never had it happen to me, but in the crowded trains, I can see it happening. I generally keep my wallet in my front pocket with my hand over it, when the trains get full. Learn to use the Yamanote line and some key subways. It will save you a lot of money, if you can avoid using the taxi's.Have fun!AT2
