Guys:
I just got word today from our Nairobi office that I've been booked into the Serena Hotel. Can anyone tell me anything about it? I assume that it's girl friendly, but actually I know nothing about it.
If anyone is around on September 17th or so and wants to get together, I would be happy to buy the first beer.

I'd still welcome anyone's suggestions regarding accomodation.

You are obviously well informed on the subject of malaria prophylaxis and treatment. Kudos to you.
Why would you use a credit card at an ATM, unless you like getting "double whacked"? I use my debit card at ATM's and credit cards at restaurants, hotels, gas stations etc.

You surely are draining your balls in Nairobi a few nights?
Your observations and homework cannot be faulted regarding your location in Mombasa, although i tend to favour the less crowded neighbouring, Nyali beach.

Malaria: Prophylaxis shouldn't be used anymore because it brings forward resistance. It's not necessary also. If you get bitten, go to a doctor, if not possible, you should have stand-by drugs with you. "Malarone" might be good as stand-by. Sometimes there is resistance, but it weakens the effects. Go to a doctor as soon as possible. More efficiency in Kenya has "Lariam" (Mefloquin - but don't use in Thailand!) or Riamet (Artemether+Lumefantrin).
Last agent combination is used by the Kenyan Government with the name "Coartem" since 2006. Because it's fairly cheap and effective also. Academics critized this because it brings forward resistance to a relatively new drug.
Money: It was told by earlier visitors that only VISA is accepted at most ATMs.
Just my short summary of my research.

Malaria : Haven't taken prophylaxis in years and have never been bitten ( sour blood, I have been told ) . If you do get bitten , an after-the-fact injection is available from every G.P. for very little cost and will cure you within 24 hrs. If you arrive here immunized with the latest prophylaxis to which the local strains haven't had time to develop resistance as yet , you have to spend a pretty penny disproportionate with the benefit , IMO.
Money : credit cards are widely accepted and there is a fair number of ATM's everywhere . Haven't seen a traveller's check in years.
Enjoy and be safe!

Evening gents.
I'm living in Asia and have been having a lot of fun with the petite, silky-skinned gals out here. However, for some years now I've been harbouring a desire to visit Africa, and I've finally got round to it. So, next month I'll be having my first trip to Mombasa. I've been reading the Kenyan thread for ages now, and it looks like you're all having a great time.
I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give me on the following 3 subjects.
Hotels: I'm considering the Kahama hotel & the Kenya Bay Beach resort, which are both in my price range (around 50usd per night or less), and both on Bamburi beach I belive. Does anyone have any positive or negative opinions on either of these, or can suggest a better alternative?
Malaria: Do you all take malaria medecine? I assume I need to take Larium or Malarone, but I'd appreciate any views on this.
Money. Are travelers cheques the best way to go? I don't want to carry bundles of cash if credit cards are not widely accepted.
I'd be very greatful for any suggestions, and I assure you your help will be rewarded by a me posting detailed reports and a multitude of photos from my nocturnal adventures.
