Mighty Spearsman made all the relevant points on this but just to add one thing about ATM's: some ATM's have a very low limit on the amount they will dispense in one transaction AND they charge a fixed fee per transaction if you don't bank with that bank. I recall one "emergency" occasion when I needed around 2 juta and had to make 5 or so transactions (in Plaza Semanggi) and I calculated that it cost me around 300k more than it should have.

If you are "anal" about money, exchange rates etc it's best to have a local bank account with online banking and transfer money from home which costs nothing and the exchange rate is better. That's what I do. There is an English expression which is apposite: penny wise, pound foolish.

Never exchange your dollar in Hotel or Tour n Travel, Hotel usually have high taxes meanwhile Tour n Travel are taking advantages from customer who wish to buy tickets from them...

Exchange your money in some places who are doing their major business in it.

Or find it in Yellow Pages...there are such place who are doing business in exchange currency...and they have competitive rate.

To further illustrate my point below, today I changed money in town at the rate of US $1 = 9,390 rupiah, then this evening I was at Hotel Le Meridien and noticed that the posted rate at their front desk was US $1 = 8,560 rupiah.

Also, US bills with John Snow's signature (Snow was Bush's second Treasury secretary) are also acceptable. Try to avoid money with O'Neill's signature (Bush's first Treasury secretary) as those are considered too old.

During the last few weeks, the exchange rate has been fluctuating somewhere between 9,300 - 9,400 rupiah to US $1.

The best exchange rates are obtained at the various "bureau de change" that one can find in some of the shopping malls; for example, there are two exchange shops on the basement of Plaza Indonesia, I use the one next to Panorama Tours as they seem to have better rates than the one next to the hot dog shop. There's also a change shop on the main floor of Mal Ambasador, and most other malls.

Typically, hotels DO NOT offer the best rates, although if you need to change a small bill ($10 or $20), the difference in exchange rate might not be significant. Most banks seem to offer good rates, the only problem is that most banks are only open a few hours a day ("banker's hours").

NOTE: you'll get the best rate if you have larger bills ($50 and $100); also, try to have the newest notes possible, i.e. notes with Paulson's signature as Secretary of the Treasury, and bills in excellent condition (no rips or tears).

Another option is to get cash from an ATM machine, assuming you have money in your bank account My experience is that I get the best rate possible when I use the ATM machine to get local currency.

In this story is a tip for those who don't want to wait up till late for the Horny Starlets to appear. This happened last October.

I fully agree. A few weeks ago I stayed at the Sheraton and I wanted to taste Industry 9/11. I also walked around and could not find anything. After that, I tried the massage parlor in the same building but that too was a failure.
