Be careful in the Merced district. Locals will tell you that this is a gritty area--you're best off believing them. You'll probably be ok during the day if you keep your wits about you and stay in areas with lots of people around. After dark the criminal element or "ratones" as the local merchants call them get more brazen and look for targets. Watch out for darker areas, doorways, and areas where there are no merchants.

Go with a friend if possible. Lots of cops may serve as a deterent, but are underpaid and notorious for corruption. Best to have no dealings.

I know some like the SW scene. At this point, I prefer the m. P's advertised in the papers. They are clean, cheap, and I've found cuties. There are a few decent ones in Col. Roma. Full hour quality massage happy ending was about $40. You leave feeling great and waste less time beating the pavement looking for a diamond in the very deep rough that is La Merced.
