The point I am trying to make here is that it's probably not wise to send a tourist into Hillbrow at night. We do have alot of German, Dutch, and American tourists in ZA I dont need to hear it on the news. And as much as others think Hillbrow is safe for a white guy to be in that's not correct.

There's definitely two schools of thought going on here. But let's put it into perspective. It is definitely not safe to walk in Hillbrow, day or night, and particularly at night. The Summit Club in Hillbrow is worth a visit. It used to be the only place of it's kind. It's safe to go there if you go by car and park in the car park run by the club directly over the road. A guard will usually escort you the few metres from the car park to the club and, to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever been mugged crossing the road from the car park to the club. If the car park is full and you have to park even one block away, don't go! IMHO it's not safe to walk even that one block.

However, there's now a few clubs around that offer equivalent entertainment. For example, there's a place called Club Malasia in Randburg (Bram Fisher Drive near the Randburg CBD) which is basically a strip club with girls available for take out. Another similar place in Randburg, but more upmarket, is the Lollipop Lounge. This place is a strip club where the girls dance for everyone and then wander around doing private lap dances. No sex available but some of the girs are available for take out. A number of other clubs as well.

Let's not kid ourselves. Hillbrow's not safe but you can go there if you are sensible and don't take unnecessary risks. Just heed the advice on this board.

Personally I prefer to go to the places in Berea (see my earlier posts) which are in safer areas, although you still need to keep your wits about you.

Just to clue you in on something.

First off, I don't have a fence around my home theres no need for it. Up in J'burg I know that everyone has a fence because of the crime rate. Second I grew up and was raised in one of the worst parts of Miami. I am not afraid to go anywhere. Third, how do you know what race I am??

The point I am trying to make here is that it's probably not wise to send a tourist into Hillbrow at night. I agree with Pedro. You are paranoid, I go into Hilbrow at least twice a week and have been doing it for 30 years.

My black buddies are more scared of going into Sandton because there is more chance of getting mugged or Hijacked there. Thats where the criminal elements are. I don't know how long you have been here but you seem to be walking around with your eyes and ears closed, the crime is in the effluent areas.

Who do you think these guys are going to rob. People with less money than them? Any international guys coming to South Africa that want to get around to these places must be deligent and most of all get a guide or a reputable taxi service, thats all. And like any other country don't trust anyone.

Take a look at my posts here. I am an American, and a South African by marriage. I live in Die Kaap, but travel to J'burg alot on buisness. I wouldn't recommend Hillbrow to the tourists or would I go near that place at night. A white okie has no buisness in that area at night and you are most likely asking for trouble if you are there.

I have some lady friends I see when I am in J'burg. Mostly in better areas(Sandton etc..) I see one lady friend of mine and she lives in Silverton. It is meet at your own rish, but I think maybe we should now send the tourists into one of the worst neighborhoods. Lets send them to the clubs.
