Posts: 200Brasileiro - to be or not to be
Iīve been here in Rio for about a week now, Iīll be parading with Beija-Flor tomorrow(sunday) at sambodromo. I speak portuguese and dance samba as well. Iīve been so busy with regular beautiful non-pros I havenīt had too much time for mongering.
Iīm american and I too am tired of hearing this same old BS. There are alot of toursits (European and American)here who beleive that because they know many locations to go mongering feel themselves to be psuedo-brasileiros because they have been coming here for quite some time and feel at home.
Iīm happy for them that they feel at home, however there is quite a difference here in Rio between estranjeiros(foreigners) being tolerated and being accepted as a brasileiro.
If after many trips you still cannot carry on a fluid conversation in portuguese and you canīt really dance Samba no Pe ,you are being tolerated.
I get referred to as a brasileiro everyday without fail and to me it is one of the highest compliment I can think of.
All this ethnocentric one-upman-ship talk is just idle chatter without the aforementioned capabilities...

Hopefully they are just raising rates for this busy tourist traffic in town for these few weeks, and then lower them. But that is just wishful thinking on my part.
I just don't get it. For example, the economy is rough in the states, so what do I see in yesterdays morning paper.....Fridays rest. chain is offering a buy one, get one free meal with a coupon you must print online. Well, thats creative, and also getting customers in. On the other hand, what do these fucks at Luomos do, they try to make up for slow business by.....oh yea, lets jack up the prices! What asswipes!
Just to be fair, by far, Luomos is not the only business in Brazil to have this mentality. Let's see what happens in May, June, and July when its low season and a rough economy is in progress as well.

Posts: 2278Brazilian Economics in Practice - L'uomo
Was at L'uomo last night and the girls were complaining about the lack of customers. So in typical Brazilian fashion, fewer customers means raise the prices and that is what they have done.
Entrance is R$60 with no discount for taking a girl (was R$10)
40 minutes now is $210 - was $200
60 minutes now is $300 - was $280
30 minute massage is now R$70 - was R$50
Drinks have gone up too. R$14 drinks are now R$15 and Martinis which were R$6 are now R$10.

Even the Americans don't think I'm American, in restaurants I have sat down next to tables of Americans and spoke to the waiter in Portuguese. They keep on talking away loud and free, I have heard some good stories that they probably didn't think I understood. On occasion after I was finished I stopped by and commented to them about their stories and can see their embarrassed faces.
So not every American is so obvious to be an American, some of us they would never guess.

Sitting in bar Alexandra (Ave. Prado Jr.) last night, I observed the typical ugy Americano, a fat, loud, balding rube, dumbshit from Hamtramck, (Detroit) Michigan. This guy was the epitome of the type that often piques Christopherd. He was trying to impress a not-so-attractive garota and talking loud enough I could hear him across the room over the blaring music. He mentioned that he had lots of Marijuana that he brought with him in his suitcase. He noticed my disapproving stare and asked if I spoke "American." I replied I could understand the language because it is similar to English. I suggested it would be in his best interest not to openly discuss drugs lest he attract unwanted attention. He replied, "well, everyone smokes it," Then politely thanked me for my advice. The garota was not impressed and soon left the bar.
