    My thoughts exactly

I have been to Latin America more times than I remember. I have been lost in MDE Centro at 3 AM, and all I got was help to find the strip club I was looking for. Yes I was lucky, but I live life not as a scared rabbit.

Right now I think there is more danger in the so called non third world country's. The real bad guys don't care about Latin America. They have bigger fish to fry.

OK so you are walking in Centro at night. If a guy pulls a gun or knife there is a simple thing to do. Give up the few pesos in your pocket, and go on your way. I hope you have sense enough to not walk the streets with a big roll of cash. So who cares if you lose 50 K or a cheap cell phone?
You said what I have always thought. Nothing happens till it happens and if one is so afraid of it happening, they need to skip (fill in the blank) & watch a murder mystery on Netflix from the comfort of their couch. Get dropped of 2 blocks from your hotel so the bad guys won't know where you are staying? You would be putting yourself at 10 X more risk by walking the 2 blocks back to your hotel!! Most assinine post I have read on this forum!!

Kelso, you are correct & I agree with you!

My goodness, I was joking about your over cautiousness. Damn man!! How many times has a taxi driver or uber driver sold your hotel / apt intel to a ladron? I have always enjoyed your posts but to suggest that someone be dropped off or picked up 2 blocks from their hotel, especially by an uber drive (where you constantly have to be on the phone checking where they are and how long they will be) is stupidity at its lowest level. You suggested we walk 2 blocks the order an Uber? Really? Get dropped off 2 blocks from your hotel then have to walk the streets back to your hotel? Really? If you don't trust your hotel / apartment enough to be dropped off there, you need to get another hotel / apartment!!

Speaking only for myself, I believe I would I would rate Spanish fluency as more important if it were higher up on the list of accomplishments that have benefited me in life. Looking at it from another angle, while I don't doubt learning Mandarin, Thai, or Slavic languages would enhance my experiences when I visit countries where they are spoken, I don't really feel like I'm missing out on enough that I'm going to try to convince people they can't enjoy themselves without language immersion. I'm convinced it is a plus to be multilingual but I feel no need to hammer at the point and tell people what they can and can't do without language ability. My advice is go and see for yourself, decide if you want to devote the time to language learning or if you are satisfied with your experiences without it.

I agree with the meaningful relationships. With respect to true friends and everything else, "never" is a very strong word. After all, we can have the misfortune of being misled by fake friends and con jobs who speak the same language. Sure, it's easier to sense deceit when you don't have to figure out what someone is saying but real con men rely on connecting with their marks. Sometimes when the marks feel vulnerable and the con man is the only one who speaks the mark's language. "Always ripped off on prices" is maybe an explanation for the popularity of places like New Life where prices are posted on the wall with English explanations. I think I learned something from this today.

It's only overrated if you are the one that doesn't speak it. My first trip to Colombia 12 years ago I did not have more than ten words of Spanish and I had a great time but now that I speak pretty good Spanish it is a million times better.

Do you invite Chicas back to your apartment? You better be careful, they might sell your apartment number to Bandito! Do you buy groceries / beer and bring them back to your apartment? You better be careful, the guy bagging your groceries may sell your whereabouts to burglar!El Mechanico.

So I picked up some, and can communicate (and flirt) with good old fashion google translate. I always travel solo, as it pretty much makes the experience so much better. Except Jaco. Jaco sucks.

Would Cartagena be better because of the tourism factor?

I am opting for a nice airbnb with a sick view.

Sure, SecretBenefits, WhatsYourPrice, SeekingArrangements, SugarDaddie.com have all been useful. I still like SA the best though.

So, unless you're a member of a criminal organization, whether you take a taxi or bus probably doesn't matter much.

Is Laureles safe enough for a poor Spanish speaking first timer?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is, it depends on where in Laureles. There are areas at the fringes of Poblado where you probably don't want to go, especially after dark. The same is true in Laureles, especially in the area between Laureles and El Centro. Fortunately, there's no real reason to go to those areas, except to pass through in a taxi.

    The detailed answer:

I spent 9 months living in Poblado and frequently walked from the south end at La Frontera, to Parque Lleras, or walked back. Several times I made the walk after midnight (waiting until the bars close to try and catch a taxi is a bad idea). At no time did I have any problems.

I've spent the last 2 months living in Laureles. During this time, I've spent a lot of time walking around. I've done a fair amount of walking after dark and haven't had any problems. Maybe it's just me.

If you stay in Laureles, stay in the area between Avenida Bolivariana, Calle 33, Avenida Nutibara and Calle 44, unless you're staying along Carrera 70. Then you can stay north of Calle 44 just stay south of the metro station at Estadio.

Along Carrera 70 are plenty of bars and restaurants, most are inexpensive. Plenty of people out at night, especially Thursday thru Saturday. Huge crowds and serious party atmosphere whenever Atletico Nacional has a home game. Heavy police presence on those nights. There are a few girls who work the street and clubs at night, but they're harder to spot than the girls in Parque Lleras. They keep a much lower profile.

Except for Calle 44 and Calle 33, the side streets within the area defined above are nice, residential streets with plenty of small restaurants and stores scattered around. My street has a security guard who rides through on a bicycle all night long.

Parque Lleras is the upper class party area. Everything is more expensive. It has more food and party options. La Setenta (Carrera 70) is the middle class party area. Beer costs about 1/2 of the Lleras price, same with food. The hotel options in Laureles are more reasonable.

One rarely mentioned advantage of Laureles, no hills. Almost anywhere in Poblado you'll be walking up and down the hills. If you're coming from sea level, are older and not in good physical condition, you're going to end up taking a lot of short taxi rides because of the hills.

If you want more glitz and glamour and want to be around more gringos, spend the money and stay in Poblado near Parque Lleras. If you want the party atmosphere with a decent level of comfort, stay in Laureles and save 20 - 30%. If you want the cheapest of everything, save 50% and stay in El Centro.

    Relacion Seria

She really didn't ask me for anything. All she wanted was a relacion seria conmigo. I did give her the rest of money I had leftover before I left so about 160 K. I have been very successful on that site albeit not as successful on the site in Medellin. I was only able to meet two of the like 10 girls I connected with on the site.

Playing CSI@ISG is fun, as many attempted after your post, but I rather suggest to use Google to find news on local newspapers. These two articles provide some information on this incident.

Also a third person was injured, a guy who was just passing by on his bike and got a random ball in his leg.
