I for one am probably done with Thailand.

Just as an aside, I have been using the same travel ins company for many years, 6-11 months at a time. My new policy will be about $300 per month for $100 K and Covid protection. I now pay $143.

I went over to Cambodia before Covid to avoid Immigration hassles, figured it would be easy to roll in and out of Bangkok / Thailand as I pleased. O well. Then I get the $3000 deposit malarky here in Cambo.

After 25 years, its tough to think that I won't be going back to Thailand for the foreseeable future, and at my age, could be never again. And as much as I love Cambodia, I wouldn't give them $3000 for a Covid entrance fee, so when I leave here (my Visa is up in March), looks like I'm going to the USA and staying for a while.

O well, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Porsches are being heavily discounted, guess its time to see America first as they say. I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy Thailand during some great years, but times change. Good luck in your wanderings guys and take care.

So I pass by soi 4 this evening and saw more bar open and more girls on the street and of course on the bar, but not so much busy in term of customers. The other thing he did that I enjoyed was 'Confessions of a Thai Private Eye' which is an apparently non-fiction work, based on a set of interviews with some farang private detective in BKK.

I have just finished reading Confessions of a Thai Private Eye, and although old, I found it, on top of being entertaining, quite insightful and learned tons of stuff despite having traveled to Thailand a few times. I thought it would be discussed here and rightfully found some references to it as per the post I am "replying" to. It is a must read for anyone travelling to the land of the smiles especially for the lesser known aspects concerning police, judicial system etc. The information it contains complements well the intelligence you can gather in this forum. I wanted to ask is if anyone knows (especially senior members) if the author was referring to this forum in the Afterword where he thanks "The gang from the X forum". For me chances are he's referring to ISG (although there used to be another such forum back in the days). Any thoughts about this or the book in the general? How about the other books from the same author: The Bangkok Detective and Thai Private Eye, are they worth reading?

Stumble Inn, the outdoor beer bar on the Soi 4 side of Nana Plaza, was open tonight and had several customers at around 9PM. Either they jumped the gun by a few days or they are using their restaurant licence to open earlier than other bars in the area. That is, if many other bars here will open soon. They still need more potential customers to justify staffing up and opening. Interesting that a favorite Nana Plaza bargirl who has been in her province for months sent me a Line message last week and said she missed me (LOL) and was planning to come back to Bangkok on July 1, "opening day". That was last Sunday. I don't recall reading that the bars would be allowed to reopen until just a couple of days ago. But this girl seemed to know the bars were going to reopen on July 1 at least by last Sunday, possibly a few days before that.

I can't offer anything encouraging about discos. But there are several small bars in the Sukhumvit Soi 4, Soi 8 and Soi 11 area that have reopened already under the guise that they are restaurants that happen to serve alcohol rather than bars that happen to serve snacks. Although I do see more extensive food menus on display out front and I assume they do indeed have a restaurant licence. But I don't recall seeing anyine eating food in those places pre lockdown.

For instance, one of them is a small bar on Soi 8 near the corner of Sukhumvit Road that used to be called Today (at) 8. Now it is called Food And Drink. LOL. Good to put the word Food in there first.

I have only seen a scant few girls working in those newly reopened establishments and in the case of that bar all the girls seem now to be uniformed (logo on a black shirt) food and drink servers. But I recognize some as outright P4P bargirls from before.

At least it's a start.

if the girl had been attractive and good enough at her job to collect a couple of regulars to support her through these tough times and to even be willing to transfer some survival money to her if she left town for her province until this passes, she wouldn't have had to stand on the street for hours or days at a time with only 5 potential customers walking the area in a week. Consequently, the worst of the worst are the only ones left on the stroll, particularly when it comes to skill sets if not looks.

Astute observation. Attitude is what gets girls sponsors, not the looks. Leading up to Covid, working girls have been the bottom of the barrel, with sufficient numbers to muddy the waters a bit and create an impression of choice. Now, what's left is, undeniably, the bottom of that bottom, even if some of them look OK.

For better quality girls to show up on the scene, firstly the demographics must be favorable (e.g. many children per family, large proportion of young people), which they haven't been for the last 10 years. Then, in addition to the economic squeeze, there must also be some attraction factor such as an abundance of customers and percieved high payoff. As it is now, when a normal girl feels the squeeze, she'd go home to her hometown, not head to Sukhumvit.
