Someone with an anthropology or biology background can probably get more out of this than I can but here's a small genetic study of the population of Medellin.

Some interesting points I was able to understand from this.

- From their small sample size, the average Medellin person is 74.6% European, 18.1% Native American (Asian), 7. 3% African.

- 93.4% of the population of Medellin self-identifies as white.

Interesting find. Maybe I skim read it too quickly but smthg caught my eye:

"93.4% of the population of Medellin was classified as Euro-descendent, whereas 6. 5% of individuals identified as Afro-Colombian and only 0. 1% identified as Native American36. These demographic data are based on self-identification and reflect the ethnic groups that individuals consider themselves to be members of. Thus, it would appear that the vast majority Colombians from Medellin identify as white".

This strikes me as a very broad leap to make for a study of the Nature (geddit? We all know that European has never meant white. We all know that Irish, Germans, Italians, Greeks, East Europeans have all suffered prejudice from not being white (depsite some being as white as can be).

Did I miss smthg here? I can understand that many Colombians will recognise their Spanish ancestrty, but that is a stretch to claim that they self-identify as white.

All the points you made are valid but you did not mention the one that is for me the most important. Don't walk through an area where taxistas routinely roll up their windows, lock their doors, and avoid stopping even at red lights at night. Risk versus reward, it makes no sense to be there.

A lot of this is Monday morning quarterbacking. Sometimes you just get got, it happens. What of instead of being somewhat polite he ignored him and the person took offense and attacked? Would the suggestions be "Just say no gracias. "?

If someone comes over and puts their arm around you then you'd most likely do what this person did and wriggle away. I know that's what I'd do. This was less about being PC and more about being targeted as someone who would give them what he was after.

I'd also caution against escalation. I think everyone would love to meed out justice, I know I would, but there is a serious risk of injury in fighting back, especially with a weapon. Instead of losing a hundred dollars you'd get into a violent confrontation with who knows what kind of consequences.

I'm glad this person shared his story and hopefully will make others more cautious about going into "no-go zones". Hopefully I don't experience anything like this, but if I do then I hope I'm able to get out of it as good as this guy did.

No taxis in sight there just a street with barely any people and I was in front of the the shop not inside, to have a witness (I gave it a quick glance but didn't notice any inside waiting area nor people there, just bunch of stuff kind of randomly arranged) . I was very close to the safer and more crowded area at this point ('almost there') and calling an Uber didn't occur to me. Plus I couldn't pull out the phone either with him actively trying to steal it, he'd just snatch it in a second an be gone, but in retrospect there was moment of rest when I could try to do it, I was just more focused on watching the surroundings and figuring my next move. Finding a shop and waiting inside for an Uber is definitely a good idea and good way to go about it though, especially that many of the shops have cameras which should serve as additional deterrent.

I am familiar with the area, and probably the street you were on. In that area calling an Uber would not work, nor is a taxi likely to be close. Plus you have seconds to act, not time to pull out a phone even. That is if you could not get inside a shop that might be safer at least. Locals are as likely to just watch as to help you, but if you were very loud and created a scene it might help scare the guy off. Or he might just pull a gun and shoot you or a knife and stab. That also is not uncommon in Medellin during robberies, so I guess you were lucky that it was a robber that was trying to con you as he robbed you, or in order to rob you.

Right. Not belittling your event but this happens in every major city around the world. I remember many years ago being targetted by some football hooligans. I felt no loss of pride by running as fast as I could to the safety of a large shop and calling the police. Not that the police would have helped you, but I imagine running at speed and a large shop could help.

Some people are so gullible and politically correct that they would tell an obvious thief where they're from, what they do for work, and anything else they would ask. Even come in close for a hug? While I tell you about my trials and errors en mde.

1) living here is a whole different game then vacation. Daily life is heavy here and I thank god for my privileges every day here.

2) in the 3 months I've been here. After 40+ dates and only sleeping with about 10 of them. I've finally gotten my harem.

3) chemistry is something that money can't buy and I'm about quality vs quantity.

4) the one in blue is a digital marketer for her father, the one in the middle is a future dentist in 2 years, the one on the right owns her own nail salon.

5) take time to get to know the girls you're fucking, invest in them emotionally / mentally / and obviously money. If you're able to connect with them at a emotional intelligent level. They will show you perspectives of medallo that even the richest person in the world will never get to experience. - Eyeballing the chart in figure 1, most people stay above 70% European genetics and under 10% African, but the NA / Asian component is pretty constant.

- The NA / Asian component mostly comes from the mother's side, European component comes from the father's side (result of European conquest of the Americas).

- 93.4% of the population of Medellin self-identifies as white.

Didn't care too much about the disease-resistance discussion in the paper.

I'm not suggesting he pull his phone out in front of the guy and get an uber. Once he was in the relative safety of the store front and the guy left his immediate vicinity, walking into the store and getting an uber to come seems like a viable option.

Newbie here, planning to go to Medellin later this month for a holiday. Planning to visit a few spots around different cities (Medellin, cartegana and Bogota in itinerary).

Was wondering if anyone have any tips for safe mongering. I am esp worried about the physical safety aspect.

How can you stop the guy form following you though? I've been approached by many strangers here and didn't have any issues until now (either brushing them off or having a quick conversation without stopping) but if it's just the guy, you and no one else on empty street then what choice there is but to interact, acknowledge and observe him closely to gauge the intentions and see what he's doing? (Admittedly I should not have even be there in the first place).
Sprinting on every sign of approach doesn't seem like a viable solution since 99% of them are not attempted robberies (at least so far, hah)

If you don't want or need anything from a stranger, just put up a resting-*****-face, ignore them, and walk quickly by like you've got more important things to do. The moment you weren't anything but 100% cold to him, he knew you were a potential mark. Why's a random dude walking up to you in a foreign country, and striking up conversation with you when neither of you can speak each other's languages? Best case scenario he's trying to tout for some random bar where he wants to rip you off. Worst case he's trying to set you up to rob you. This isn't even a foreign country thing, even in Manhattan if some random person walks up to me and strikes up a conversation and I don't know them, if I can't get away from them (waiting for a subway or something) I am on high alert, and make it pretty clear immediately I have no desire to converse or interact with that person.

About two blocks from Plaza Botero a guy started walking next to me and struck up a conversation. Where am I from etc. He started in Spanish then switched to botched English. We exchanged couple friendly words, names, handshake, he said "Welcome to Colombia" and split to the right. I continue walking.

There was a short and empty street. I noticed the guy is back walking alongside me, he waved and came close. He put his arm around my neck to give me friendly 'hug', more like a strong squeeze.
