Right-o then, it's years since I posted here, so having spent the best part of 6 months in Suva, I best give you a report. Where to start? Having come here from SE Asia, getting used to the slower pace was a bit of a headfuck. Nonetheless, my employer has been supportive and I found my feet quickly. I moved to a fairly nondescript neighborhood, preferring to avoid the expat gossip circuits of Domain and Toorak, my street is mostly Indian, but a few iTaukei around as well. On the contrary, Fijians are some of the friendliest people I've met.

Since I am away for work frequently, I have a bolt hole apartment, 2 bdr, kitchen, aircon for 1500 FJD a month. Power bills run about 50 a month and the only other expense I have is internet for another 50. That buys me 75 g day and 75 night, which is plenty since I download my shows while I sleep. I looked at plenty of places that were more expensive or the same price and nowhere near as comfy. It's not the Ritz, but it does the trick.

I'm only a 10 minute taxi ride from the city centre, such as it is, so if I want to go for a night on the tiles, the trip home is 5 FJD. Beer is not too expensive, depending where you drink, ranging from 18 FJD for a happy hour jug at Downunder to around 30 at O'Reilly's. The nightlife is pretty shit in Suva, from the POV of a well-traveled expat, but some like it. My main complaints (mostly about O'Reilly's) are the huge numbers of gays and transexuals (not homophobic, but I'm looking for vagina), staff who will rip you off without thinking of the consequences (got a bartender there sacked a few weeks back), thieving bitches on the dance floor (mate had his wallet lifted), violent drunken ethnic Fijians (twats, I'm one of the bigger blokes around Suva and although I don't go looking for trouble, I won't shy away from it) and the snobby off-shore civil servants and NGO types who think they are there to save the world. Give the place a go by all means, but I'd rather eat my own face than make it my regular. I haven't pulled from here, got a few numbers, but have had better success at Downunder. One caveat, this place is notorious for [CodeWord902] drinkers and many of my workmates have said they had their first beer here at age 14-15, so make sure you have your Department of Fisheries ruler handy so you can throw the jailbait back. You are more likely to find unpretentious office and shop girls here winding down and I've ended up taking a few home after plying them with cheap drinks. The only other places I've really tried are Traps on Victoria Parade, which I dub twatsville, and Temptation 1, a very local sort of a joint with plenty of potential on the female front, but I was so pissed the one time I went in that I couldn't pull if I tried.

Samoa is a find country with lovely people, but for me it's the travel equivalent of a roofie.
