Why would it be a problem now? If you couldn't tell a katoey from a girly-girly in Thailand, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between a biological female and a transsexual at home, either.

Note that there are some differences in bone structure that cannot be easily changed by surgery or hormones. Note that a man typically has shoulders, which are distinctly broader than their hips. Its the opposite for women. Granted there are exceptions. There is a tiny girl at work with huge boobs and shoulders that are clearly broader than her hips. She is also about 4'8" tall, has the high-pitched voice of a child. She clearly has some growth defects because her body is just not normal. If she was 5'8" and had a deeper voice, I would be suspicious.

Gender identity and sexual preference are completely separate. Also there are men who are cross dressers, but are still straight, and never want to transition. Most of the trans women we see in SE Asia, (bacla in PI, or katoey in LOS), are gender dysphoric, "a woman trapped in a man's body". But they may be attracted to women, men, or both.

Well, the attraction to women by the Katoey is hard to fathom. It is unlikely the Ladyboy is into to women, and if "it" is, its hard to fathom any attraction to a dike. You don't hear about too many straight guys getting a sex change so they can chase biological chase women. Common sense would suggest a ladyboy would be attracted to biological, hetero male with a functional penis, just like have always been attracted to since puberty.

I did hear a strange case where I worked in home country where some guy went to have a sex change because he wanted to be a lesbian. That was not understandable either.

It is considered slightly impolite in Thai culture, so don't ask if you already know. If you are really not sure, then don't ask, unless you are interested to go with her. Since otherwise it's rude to be nosey. Same as in Thailand, it is not good etiquette to ask the price of something, if you have no intention to buy.

Suppose I was on the BTS and I see a beautiful Asian lady. It would not be good etiquette for me to ask her if she is Thai or Japanese, right. I should be minding my own business.

If you want to go with a girl, then she maybe slightly miffed if you ask if she is a ladyboy, but hopefully will take it well. The tall girls get asked all the time (but not by me), so they are used to it.

If you are chatting to some girl, and point out a ladyboy over there, it is still impolite somewhat to ask if that other one is a ladyboy. Like the Thais will think, why is that important to you? Polite Thai girls will try to treat LBs with no prejudice as though they were a real girl.

Having only spent 3 weeks in Thailand, I'm certainly not an expert in spotting ladyboys. One evening while checking out the freelancers at the Nana Hotel parking lot, one very attractive girl simply approached me and said (in English) "I'm a real lady. " After that I decided to be bold and simply ask a 4 suspected ladyboys. Three of them simply told me that they were ladyboys. The last one just said "It's only 1000 baht. " That made me feel good that I could spot a ladyboy, but I may have just questioned the ones that were obvious.

Ladyboy mamasans and waiting staff are not at all uncommon.
