I am currently in Romania for the first time since the country entered the European Union.

I have found that this has made a significant difference to the availability of girls here in the country, since they can now go to Italy and Spain with just the identity card they all carry anyway, instead of having to get a passport and visa.

This year most of the one I knew last year, plus many of their contacts, are simply no longer here, or are leaving: for example one girl I know who gives good service was here on Monday 30th July, but has now gone to Italy...and even more galling to me, the one I prefer is now working in La Jonquera on the Spanish/French border, only 100 km from where I live! And I have come 3500 kms to visit them.

In short, much of the best Romanian talent is now in Spain and Italy, with rather fewer in France and the non-latin language countries.

The other difference is that with the newly opened border the girls here are much more commercial, and the low prices of the past are juat that, of the past.

I used to be able to find something acceptable for 50 ron (about 17 euros) but this year it was 150 because I hqd to pay commision, and the quality of the girls is nothing like as good.

About improving areas, I heard that there's lots of renovations and new constructions currently in Titan, but buying in a commieblock, even nice, is not in my tastes. I much prefer the central "old" districts, like Victoriei and Cismigiu. Also given that I will only be able to use it 7/8 weeks a year I would want to rent it when I am not using it myself, so a downtown location is essential.

Anyway this is only a project. If you don't mind, as you know Romania much better than me, I'll get back to you with a few questions by PM if my plans ever materialize.

Does anyone have experience with buying and owning an apartment in Romania, and property prices in Bucarest's nicest central neighborhoods (Cismigiu, Victoriei, Floreasca, Primaverii, ect) ?

Key thing is to work through a trusted Romanian associate of yours - if you are dealing directly with either agents or owners, the price will be inflated.

I dont think foreigner's can take mortgages out yet so you'd either have to arrange the loan in your own country or buy the property outright.

Here is some info I collected, from going back to early 2006.

Astounded that the info is so bad compared to other cities. Like one punter says “I nobody else ever recommanded anything, and I myself never read anything useful ('read this website' or 'go to the mall' is not really useful information)…. It reminds me a lot of Romania itself: there is a tendency to give little but to expect lots in return.”

It is recommended by my Romanian friend that a Romanian calls for service and negotiates the price and verifies that the photo is what you get. He said that if they find out you are a foreigner or staying at one of the major expensive hotels (Marriott, Intercontinental) they will jack up the price. Some of the really hot ones will only service at their apartment.

Prefix for Romania is +40. You can contact them by dialling +40 and then 722.

Last year the US signed an agreement with Romania for the construction of military bases in Ro - around Constanta.

US forces from Germany are being redeployed here, it is not just about a threat from Iran (should there be one), but is part of a fundamental review of strategic positioning.

Downside is American GI's which may drive the prices up.
