Guys, I live in PP and I've just read the last 10 pages with your reports.

I'm sorry but you're all overpaying like crazy and making it hard for us expat mongers! No wonder PP is no more value for money and the going rates are now on par with Thailand or even with the West!

Really, where to start?

Local salaries & cost of life:

As much as you guys enjoy wasting as much as 100 bucks for a short time, let me tell you the average salary for a waitress or hairdresser or masseuse is no more than 70-80$ per month + food + sometimes accomodation (a matress on the floor and shared toilet).

This is also true for the girls in pretty much all hostess bars, fixed salary is 70$ + 1$ for each lady drink + tips.

As for food, their normal meal is rice or soup and it aint going to cost more than 1. 25$ including tea or water and many girls are ok with 0. 75$ rice bowls.

Cigarettes are 0. 50$/packet, beer and soft drinks are around 0. 50$/can.

A mototaxi will ask khmers no more than 1$ to make 3-4 km, and a quick ride from 51 to 136 is no more than 1500 riels.

All tuktuk are ok asking 1$ to khmers and driving in downtown. 2$ is only if they go far away.

Even the laziest tuktuk driver earns at least 10 bucks / day which is a GREAT salary by khmer standards, don't believe any of their BS.

Gasoline is 1. 25$ per litre by the way, that means 20-30km on a tuktuk.

Pair of shoes in the market : 5-6$

Female dress : from 4 to 8$

Haircut for girls : 1-2$, or 5-6$ for color.

Nails : no more than 1$ in any market or beauty parlor, I mean downtown, it's even cheaper in the suburbs.

Bags : 5-10$ at most.

Watch : 4-5$

Fake jewelry : from 1$ up in any market.

Parfums etc : from 1$ up everywhere unless they want original western products.

Rent : most of the girls working in the riverside live nearby in shitholes where they pay no more than 30-50$ per month for a room with shared toilet.

Others live far away with husbands kids and family, nobody in the suburbs pay more than 100$ even for a big house, only foreigners pay from 200 to 500$/month or more (diplomats can even pay 2000$/month for a villa, to each his own).

* So, think twice when happily tipping 10$ or more, as that's a shitload of money for the girls and for khmers in general!

It's one year I don't go in Siem Reap but in general it looks like a ripoff to me.

Too many tourists fresh off the boat overpricing, girls with terrible attitudes, runners, scams, and most of them only do ST of course.

Try at Mikey's Bar across the road from Bar Street, there's maybe a dozen freelancers but quality is average at best, should be 20$ ST.

But now they may ask 30$ or more, I wouldn't be surprised there's too much money going on in SR now and the girls are getting greedy bastards.

The best shag I had in SR was in a rundown khmer massage, hard to find in an unpaved alley. 10$ full service and GFE including 30-40 mins of half baked khmer massage.

There are other girls in the street in Bar Street unless the cops cleaned up the area, some others can be spotted in downtown and at night market after dark,.

But the best girls stick to 5 stars hotels so it's not easy to tell you exactly where to go and in any case they will ask at least 50$ ST I guess.

KTVs may ask 100 or more LT, some hotels have small discos with girls, really it's all going upscale in SR, not worth it!

you must allow at least 5 hrs from phnom penh, the traffic keeps getting worse and the so called "highway" is just a dangerous dual lane road, that's why many call it "the death highway".

driving at 160km / h is possible in a few areas but you risk your neck, the khmers see nothing wrong in driving in the wrong lane at full speed especially by night.

last time i took a bus to sihanoukville we spent 1 hour just to reach the pp airport and the suburbs.

the only time i made it in 3. 5 hrs was when we hired a private taxi, we paid 15$ each, door to door from pp riverside to shv occheuteal pier and we started early morning to avoid traffic jams, he was driving like crazy, not for the faint hearted!

i have slowed down now prinz traffic is getting bad, khmer drivers say no more, cows and towns. i leave at 6 am and i'll have to do the drive now in around 3. 5-4 hours stop for lunch. i also don't have my mercedes-benz anymore, camry's eat my dust, it just likes speed and handles amazing, compared to my suv now. oh, the brakes on my benz did save my life more than once another reason i've slowed down.

Would love to help you out, but I'm busy this weekend. If no one can help you out just go to Walkabout on St. 51, lots of Aussie punters hang out there mate and the place is open 24hrs / day. Busiest times around lunch and 7-8 pm it starts filling up, maybe a little later. You can even get a ST in the morning on, but selection varies and not recommended unless you really need to bust a nut or see a cutie that will do ST for $15 + $3 for room. Just ask the bartender for a room.

I have in the past got some cuties in there, but haven't been there in about a year. Maybe I might just drop in today so I can give you a more accurate report, but yesterday I went out to buy a new laptop and the CPP Party and others Parties are campaigning for the up coming election. Traffic is bad enough without having them making parades everywhere.

There are not many left and they all leave so much to be desired.

My favourite are the ones near the port and what Phnom and Toul Kork but they're really a dreadful experience most of the time.

The only reason to stick with freelancers is to avoid barfines and to pay less for the service.

Unfortunately, also the FL market has been fucked up and now you'll hardly boomboom for less than 20$ when just two years ago it was ok for 10$ in many places.

Security is the main concern with freelancers, many are on yaba or drunks, many steal in your room, many will do runners, many will just don't do what they promise once in your room, and many of course don't have IDs.

The service is quite hit or miss, one day you can find a tiger in bed and the next girl will refuse to even do bow jobs, it's really unpredictable no matter if you interview her with care.

Some are super friendly and down to heart and can become genuine friends, all the others are nasty bitches hardened by drugs and years of whoring.

It's quite a gray area and you must be lucky to find the diamond in the rough.

As for the room prices, I read some guys here paid 5 or even 10$ for one hour, that's ridicolous! Khmers pay 1.25$ in the suburbs and in the Boeung Kak lake, there's no reason to pay more than 2$ in str. 51 or nearby, they're all the same shit windowless rooms and with 5-10$ you can get a room in a low cost guesthouse for a whole day!

Free sex : very hard but not impossible if she likes or she believes she can become your girlfriend or even your wife, most of the freelancers double as gold diggers actually.

Friendship : you can become a sort of friend and get discounts after a while, but don't expect anything else, she will always ask you money in one way or the other and I've heard many horror stories about freelancers earning the trust of barangs just to steal anything they can and do a runner to vietnam or their godforsaken village.

After all there's a good reason these girls are freelancing rather than working in bars.

Prices for Hostess Bars

It used to be 10-15$ years ago, now it's 20-50$ with 5-10$ barfines.

It's absolutely disproportionate compared to the living costs, and years ago the living costs were not much different from 2013!

There's NO reason for this doubling or tripling in prices, but tourists seem to be happy paying as much as in Thailand so there's no going back.

So, the going rate should be 20$ for ST but nowadays the market has been ruined, and 30$ seems to be the minimum in many bars.

It would be also a loss of face for the girl to be paid less than the other girls.

If you refuse and go away she will just look at you in disdain and tell the girls you're a cheap charlie and other funny khmer insults.

And this coming from girls living in 30$/month shitholes eating 0. 75$ meals, these girls are really shameless actress and full of shit from top to bottom, unfortunately this is the situation and overpaying tourists can only blame themselves if now the market is fucked up.

Any other trick? None so far, unless she really likes you, but that's not going to happen often, a 20$ ST is the very best option you can expect today.

You can soften up a bit if you in the same bar every day just for a quick drink, OK, they will become a lot more friendly, but don't expect any discount, nobody will come for less than 20$ and it will be usually just a quickie without any enthusiasm, a shower and a 5 minutes boomboom. That's all you get, probably not even french kiss included, that's reserved for overpayers.

So, is it worth it? I say NO! But to each his own, if you're throwing dollars out the window the hostess bars are a good place for it, but then again I would stick to 104 and skip 136/130/118/110.

104 tends to have the best and wildest girls in my opinion, they're all ok with 30$ ST and some even 25$.

You don't even need to drink anything, just give 1-2$ tip to the girl and she's ok, the problem is the mamasan spotting you're not drinking and making a mess but it depends on which bar.

Hostess Bars

Well, one of my ex GF worked in 136 so I've some direct knowledge about the inner workings of these bars.

As I wrote before, the salaries are usually 70$/month + tips + lady drinks, paid cash on 1st day of the month.

There's a high turnover and many girls just stick with the same bar for 3-6 months.

This is due to the bar having only a few customers or the usual bitchings between girls and owners.

If a girl doesn't show up she'll be fined 10$, if she keeps doing troubles especially with paying customers she'll be fired on the spot.

You may think there's a strict selection during the hiring process but it's BS! When they need a new girl the owner just asks around or tell the girls

To bring some of their friends and if they're ok they can start right away.

There's also no difference in salary or treatment between stunners and fuglies, it's up to them to make money with lady drinks and barfines or do nothing all night and going home empty handed.

People think bars only seek stunners but it's not true, stunners are hard to find, and many customers have weird tastes, I've seen even the uglyest girls being barfined and paid well, anything goes, really.

Farm fresh girls are usually unpretentious and honest but they quickly become hardened and sleazy while working in a bar, and the other girls will teach them all the tricks of the trade so don't ever expect girlfriend material unless you're lucky and in any case most of them have boyfriends and sponsors already.

It's a job. It's an illusion, no more no less.

Barfines : they're all for the bar, nothing goes into the girl's pocket.

Lady Drinks : usually they earn 1$ per lady drink, and usually it's water + cocacola, or they would get drunk every day! Of course 1-2 real drinks per night are expected and sometimes they indeed get drunk, it depends.

After hours : if she really likes you she could tell you to pick her up at 03AM when the bar closes, and if she's really into you she could like the idea of becoming your girlfriend, it happens and it happened to me too, it's no big deal, but they can become high maintenance, you must be very clear about money and all or she will think you're a sucker and squeeze you like a lemon!

Friendship : you can indeed become a "friend" but if there's no money involved it will not go far.

Sorry that's just the way it is, real genuine friendship can only happen if you speak fluent khmer and if you know the score.

Rescueing the girl : that's another myth spread by NGOs, in reality none of these girls want to be rescued, they're making so much easy money it must be the time of their lives.

I heard of a few weirdos doing this rescue thing, just to waste a shitload of dollars and to see the girl going back to the bar the next week.

Marriage : I personally know one guy who's marrying a former 136 bargirl, they live near Psar Chas and now she's pregnant.

They're happy and she loves him genuinely, maybe they're the exception to the rule, I don't know, but they're the only successful couple barang / bargirl I know, all the others crashed and burned miserably.

Free sex : well, if she really likes you, you can pay the barfine or wait 03AM and pick her for free, but this is VERY rare, and it can only happen if she plans to become your girlfriend, so in any case you'll pay money one way or the other and gold diggers can be even more expensive than proper bargirls in the long run.

Trust : never ever believe bargirls' bullshits, always be alert and always take for granted she's a professional liar.

Security : girls in hostess bars are relatively safe as the bar owners instruct them to avoid stealing from customers as the police can make troubles if a bar receives too many complaints.

In any case, if you get back to the bar and make a mess the police will always defend the khmers and you'll be asked to pay a fine even if you're the victim.

If you get violent in the bar or don't want to pay the bill, you'll get bottled or beaten up by the nearby tuktuk and undercover cops.

It's FULL of undercover cops in the riverside, don't be fooled, and they're there for protection of the bars.

Every bar pay bribes to the police, if they don't the next day the bar is closed and the owner arrested for trafficking or whatever.

Lady Drinks : it's a ripoff but that's how bars make money.

Expect also padded bills, especially at Candy Bar and a few others.

Complain loudly and hold your own but don't get violent or you're fucked.

The Girls:

Most of the working girls live in the area near Psar Chas (riverside) , or in decrepit shitholes in Toul Kork, or near the airport, or near the Russian market, or even in the southern suburbs on 1$/rooms.

Seen with my eyes, and if you ask they will show you.

You'll probably not believe the girls asking you 50 bucks live in such a shithole, but this is Cambodia!

As much as they can look good with a nice 4$ dress and cheap makeup that's where they belong and that's where they families live.

You can spot many of the riverside girls in the morning shopping and eating at Psar Chas, they'll be dress as civilians with jeans and t-shirt or even pijamas, no makeup no high heels. Take a look by yourself. They're absolutely average when seen for what they really are.

Boyfriends : most of the girls have khmer or expat boyfriends, some are even married with kids, and ALL the girls have at least one kid anyway.

When she tells you she need money for her baby. Well a decent school is usually from 0.75$/day to no more than 1.5$/day including meals and sometimes even transportation (door to door or whatever).

When she tells you her family is starving, remember almost every khmer family owns their house so there's no rent involved, electricity is no more than 20$/month if they really spend a lot, a gas tank is 30$ and will last for more than 3 months with heavy use, water is no more than 5$/day and 20 litre bottles of drinkable water are 0.75$ door to door!

Rice is 0.70$/Kg and a lot less if you buy 10kg or 50kg, pork is 5-6$/kg, chicken 3-4$/kg, tomatoes 1$/kg. You get the idea.

* So once again, if you tip her 10 bucks it's a lot of money for her and her eventual "starving family". These are downtown Phnom Penh prices by the way, I know in the rice fields a soup is just 0.25$ and everything is cheaper and that's why a whole family can live with 70-100$/month!

They always take four hours. Doing the trip in two and a half hours is possible and close to the record but one would have to be completely foolhardy. Why jeopardise your own life and the lives of others to save an hour?

I have ridden the bus many times with the moto and it it can't be done in three and a half hours. My worst trip with a breakdown was ten hours.
