Get a prepaid phonecard at the airport. I got one from Tele 2 with Internet only (no phonecalls or SMS possible). This cost me 350 rubles for unlimited.

Internet. I used the phone with the following very helpful apps: Microsoft translator, google translator, whatsapp, google maps, Uber and a random mail app. This makes navigating and setting up dates much easier.

- a laptop.

Not a real necessity, but browsing the internet for dates, writing emails in the warmth of your hotel rooms is easier with a laptop. I also used it for music while having a girl on my room. Also having google chrome with automatic translation of Russian (kyrillic) websites at hand is very good. It would even be better for you can use Tineye.

It usually does not happen elsewhere in Russia, and it happens very often in Saint Petersburg. I have close friends who have been living there for years and they warned me right away. This is a huge, ongoing, and widespread "razvod" scam that has permeated much of the most popular bar and club scene, and is not just limited to strip clubs. I have experienced daily attempts at being scammed on Tinder and by girls approaching you on Rubinstein street. Bartenders, waiters, police, and mafia are getting kick backs, and nothing is being done about it because there is so much money it in. I feel sorry for all the tourists who have been scammed during the football games in SPB.

Signs to look out for, and usually with 18-25 year old girls.

1. Tinder girl will suggest to meet on Nevski or Rubinstein street.

2. She names a good bar (could be Karaoke bar where each song is 1000, each bottle is 6000, the bill is in hundreds of dollars quickly).

3. She will say she is with another girl or girls.

4. She will usually say "we just want to get very drunk".

5. If you met a girl say in you hotel bar, never go to the bar of her choosing, it's a scam.

6. Girls approaching you constantly on Rubinstein street, asking for cigarettes, or any other excuse to speak to you.

Remember, as a foreigner, you are not able to tell these girls apart from 'normal' date. Only after living in SPB for awhile you'll start to tell. They also tend to use same phrases. If you let them take you out, this will go on for awhile, with various excuses given to avoid sex. You may have best intentions, but she has only one, to rid you of as much money as possible.

In big cities like Moscow, this does not happen, because Moscow is just too big, and other cities don't have as many tourists. Philosophus, is this accurate? I have never been to St. Petersburg, but I recently spent a number of months in Moscow, and found it very safe. I explored the city, including late at night, and did not feel worried for my phone or laptop or anything else. I have heard that Petersburg is less safe, but my goodness, your words above make it sound like you were in a war zone.

As far as taxis, shouldn't everyone be using Uber or Yandex these days? Those apps have essentially eliminated taxi scamming.

There was a recommendation for ayspb Rthis thread. Maybe the northern location was good, but the location on Fontanaka was not a good experience. The space is meh, the schedule is totally false (no girls in the lineup that were scheduled), and of course the photos weren't real but the girls weren't anywhere close in quality to the photos.
