I've been staying with Barry and Poblado Rentals way back when he only had one spot on Calle 8 and you'd be the only gringo on the block at the time. Never had any issues staying with them on every trip many years running (he now has multiple spots on that same block).

Barry's rules for his place are pretty basic:

-No under@ge chicas.

-Don't break shit.

-No loud, out of control parties and music blasting that will pi $$ off the local neighbors.

I've never had any security-related issues either. As he mentioned above, most of your security concerns will come from those you let into your gates (chicas) as opposed to those outside them.

La Isla, a US-style gentlemen's club, might be less intimidating than Gusto's for someone with no Spanish. A bit pricey, but then again so are the girls in Gusto's. It's in Las Palmas conveniently on the way from the airport. Expect to pay 200,000 pesos and up for on-site experience.

Separately, regarding Gusto's, I tried an interesting tactic on my last trip—and this was true "hunting" at its best: I found three girls ranging from 8-10. I made nice, talked to them, told them what I was looking for and what I was offering. Not surprisingly, all were seeking significantly more than I was willing to pay (I was looking for TLN at 11:30 pm on a Thursday night for 250-300 mil). After the initial rejection I let them know that I understood the pricing for such a beautiful woman in this place, and wished her luck (sincerely) in meeting her goal. I noted each girl was drinking a juice, and so I bought another one for her (cheap), got her number for a possible lunch date, then walked away. Notably not going directly to another woman.

As the night went on (since my apartment was 2 blocks away, I had no problem committing to Gusto's for the night), I would check in on the girls who were not with someone and ask them how things were going. They were usually less optimistic than before and would ask me if I found a date yet. I would always give an answer that was intended to plant a seed in their head. I'the say, "It's not important for me to find someone to go home with me, I just enjoy the music and talking to interesting people, if I can help someone with their bills, then that's good too!" Usually the guard begins to come down at that point (this is about 1 am). On this particular night, Gusto's closed early. I think 2 am. Then as I began to draw them in, I'the say good night and walk away. To go home. Right before closing I'the text to see if they found a date. They asked if I had company and if I wanted to see them. I would adjust the price to the 3 HR rate of 150 mil plus taxi, they'the counter with 200 mil and we'the seal the deal.

I think for me, the key was I was really indifferent as to having a girl the two times that worked for me. It was more like a game for me. I was willing to play a long game and it just so happened two of the three girls I targeted, didn't get picked up by another guy. The takeaway is: don't let desperation drive you to abandon your budget! They will usually come around!

How well do you speak Spanish and how successful are you at picking up girls in bars where you live? If you're not picking up the hot girls at home, you won't be picking them up in Medellin.

If you don't speak decent Spanish, you won't be picking them up here. If you're young, fit, handsome and dress right, you'll have a better chance. If you're willing to talk to one or more Colombian guys (and you can tell the guys having fun with friends from the guys on dates) and can connect with them, you have a better chance.

Of course picking up a regular girl in Colombia is usually not the same as in the US, where you make your move and 2 hours later, you're in her bed. Here you'll spend several hours talking, dancing and drinking and get a phone number, or an invite to join them again. The phone number will get you a date, which will get you another date. Depending on the girl, one of those dates will get you in her bed.

If you're spending a few days in Medellin, trying to pick up regular girls is a great way to save on condoms, because you won't have an opportunity to use one.

In Medellin, generally, women do not go out unaccompanied to bars or clubs unless they are hookers. There's always a male chaperone in the mix somewhere. You can try but it's not a pick up culture. I found the only two times this happened is with tourists, or when I happen to have a chat with a male in the group and he introduces me to his friends. Those are the only two instances where picking up would have been possible.

The "casas" are in El Centro. By the way, locals call them, "salas de masages" As far as I know, there are no other permanent type establishments which are registered businesses...

What about Energy and other places like it, aren't they considered casas as well? Just curious.

Personally I think Barry is one of the most condescending people I have dealt with and I know there are plenty of others here in this forum who would agree. He thinks he's funny. I don't. Why not book through booking.com rather than be another typical sex tourist in "gringo gulch" where the gringo tax has become automatic? If you want to party loud and late most of your nights, then stay as close to parque lleras as possible. Otherwise there are tons of great options!

Its easy to find fantastic apartments in Medellin! Just make sure you can have guests and be respectful of neighbors as anyone should be no matter where you are visiting.

The la 70 area between Estadio and avenida 33 are really cool areas! Lots of students and locals in this disco, bar, restaurant packed area. Very centrally located while taxis in Medellin are super easy and economical to get everywhere you need to be in minutes! Furthermore, another option, downtown (el centro). Many guys I know end up spending most of their time downtown! And then at night they end of taking taxis all over the city anyway. Plus, downtown is much more economical for everything. Food, chicas, rent, shopping. Everything. It is called Centro bcause it is THE CENTER. So instead of 40 minute, 25 mil taxis each way for practically every chica from Bello, it is only 12 mil and 15 - 20 minutes.

The easiest solution might be to have a chica pick you up at the airport and service you on the way back. Vico Zul is one chica who has her own car and give a combination taxi / sex experience. Not sure if they are still letting her in the mansion though, since the Mansion hates any competition. I know there are at least 1 or 2 other chicas working the same kind of deal. But can't remember who. This way you get a safe ride and you can have some good sex without having to venture out too late at night. Vico is known for being up for about anything.

Sometimes new ones pop up and disappear quickly. Often, when this happens, they reopen in a "casa" that has been closed for a while.

Other "casas" are out there. But they are private and in my experience have always been more expensive and not necessarily better than what you find in El Centro. Private meaning they are advertising somehow and you need to get their addresses by exploring and being adventurous or possibly a taxi driver. Rarely are they "walk in" like the well known centro establishments.

Web sites similar to milerticos for example, you may come across some sexy fotos you like and it turns out the girl is working with a few of her friends in an apartment they are sharing together. Sometimes these girls will work out of a place for an extended time. Sometimes they advertise a group of girls for a new private massage spot. Voila, you found an "underground casa".

Otherwise, with the maps we have available to us, they make up a complete list as far as casas go.

Whatever you do or wherever you go, prostitution is so common in Medellin, if you are friendly and a little patient you will surely find someone or some place "new. ".

There maybe one or two underground casas, but not public one, in Bello. As for your theory, it is opposite in actuality. These girls do not want to work in their own area because they hide what they are doing. Bello girls and barrio girls go to El Centro and other areas "to work at stores and restaurants."

That is hilarious but I can't laugh too hard. I was in a higher end bar in Poblado last week and the menu had beers for $12. Took me a few minutes to realize that they were, in fact, NOT asking USA Airport bar prices for their drinks!!
