The next day I walked down to the train and got on it to Prado and walked along Av. Oriental to the outer side streets to find New Life. Let me preface this post by stating I'm currently stoned and have been binge watching the new Twin Peaks series over the past couple of days. This show has me twisted.

Thanks to all who have posted reports with useful info that helped me there, and it's in that same spirit that I'll try to drop a few tidbits here in hopes they *might* be of value to someone. I don't exactly break a lot of new ground or run up high scores compared to the experienced mongerers, but hopefully there's a tip or detail that can be valuable in filling things in.

I've seen a few girls on Carrera 37 between the park and Calle 10.

Flew the Surly Skies of Spirit on an award ticket, for which they still have a lot of nickel-and-dime fees, making the actual all-in $158.16 with a bag, a window seat near the back in both directions, all the taxes, etc. Plane from Ft. Lauderdale was 100% full. Immigration was about a 50-minute wait and they're doing construction in the holding pen. It's not that they were taking a lot of time with each person, but that three flights had arrived roughly at the same time and that was causing the surge. Got some money at the airport out of the Bancolombia ATM there (small line), which didn't charge on that end, and then got some water at a snack bar just to get even smaller bills and have exact change for the taxi. Was easy to get one of the blue and white ones to go to Poblado for the official 65 K.

The hotel in El Poblado turned out to be a pretty good pick. It was the Hostal Relax 10, right on Calle Diez about a block from Parque Lleras. It's about halfway between a hostel and a hotel, with both shared rooms and private ones. I got one of the highest-end private ones, a deluxe double with a king bed, nice TV and a cramped ensuite bathroom, at $23/ night. They were OK with joiners and would not charge extra if you booked a double room, the clerk explained, but they would have to register them and wouldn't let them go without the guest's permission. All of which was cool, and similar to what I was familiar with in Asia. A few rooms had windows to the street, while others, like mine, had windows to the inside. No climate control, but it's Medellin. Booked on William Shatner's old site..

Regrouped, walked around streets on the other side, near Parque Bolivar, got something to eat and tried Club Paris. Again, no signage and just had to walk in an open door and past curtains, but the place had a more laid-back and family-run kind of feel (if such a thing is possible in that business). Only about 6 or so girls and again I botched the names, but the clear choice on appearance was a 20-something Morena with black hair and a slightly enhanced Kardashi-butt. Also great attitude, it turned out. I had pre-loaded the blue pill and paid for the full hour at 60 K (a good deal under circumstances). She was up for a lot of pounding and the butt effect was kind of a new sensation from behind, but the tightness wasn't totally there. That, a slight bit of stomach unease and the copious sweat factor (as places are never air-conned, so humidity can bring out sweat) all just barely prevented a leche. Next day I tried Zandalay, which isn't far from Paris and is on the inside blocks near the bend in Ave. Oriental. The snarky mamasan switched off the music and had the girls do the introductions. Again I just got puzzled looks when I said what sounded like the name of someone, and I added "proximo al ultimo" but they just had to trot out 2 or 3 again and I selected the one. The other activities also proved worthwhile, like the Museo de Antioquia and the Botero works, or taking the train and Metro Cable to Parque Arvi (a real must-do, IMO), or even the open-air double-decker Turibus around town. Next time Guatupe and the coffee areas.

How well do you speak Spanish and how successful are you at picking up girls in bars where you live? If you're not picking up the hot girls at home, you won't be picking them up in Medellin.

If you don't speak decent Spanish, you won't be picking them up here. If you're young, fit, handsome and dress right, you'll have a better chance. If you're willing to talk to one or more Colombian guys (and you can tell the guys having fun with friends from the guys on dates) and can connect with them, you have a better chance.

Of course picking up a regular girl in Colombia is usually not the same as in the US, where you make your move and 2 hours later, you're in her bed. Here you'll spend several hours talking, dancing and drinking and get a phone number, or an invite to join them again. The phone number will get you a date, which will get you another date. Depending on the girl, one of those dates will get you in her bed.

If you're spending a few days in Medellin, trying to pick up regular girls is a great way to save on condoms, because you won't have an opportunity to use one.

I've been staying with Barry and Poblado Rentals way back when he only had one spot on Calle 8 and you'd be the only gringo on the block at the time. Never had any issues staying with them on every trip many years running (he now has multiple spots on that same block).

Barry's rules for his place are pretty basic:

-No under@ge chicas.

-Don't break shit.

-No loud, out of control parties and music blasting that will pi $$ off the local neighbors.

I've never had any security-related issues either. As he mentioned above, most of your security concerns will come from those you let into your gates (chicas) as opposed to those outside them.

I think it's pretty basic the rules. We aren't trying to keep your security. I don't want anything bad happening to you. If normally 3 women don't go home with you on Tuesday night at 2 am in your town chances are they are up to no good here. Common sense is the key to travel. Doesn't matter where. Use the safe.
