Lackey is a strong word. I don't believe they are. Japan didnot open their markets to us for decades. Germany stubbornly depended on Russian energy supplies, made China its huge trading partner, didnot contribute enough to defense spend, and runs ECB like its private bank and does not coordinate enough with Fed occasionally. They are out allies and partners, not lackeys. That is a word reserved for Belarus, or and Korea or Mongolia and so on.

And Germany and Japan are rich enough that they don't need to fear being on their own. But there is no upside to it. Only fools break up with friends just because they can be independent. They just were selfish and depended too much on our military protection because it freed up their budgets for economic development internally.
