Nah, I think Hatyai is a cool town. Maybe my favorite provincial Thai city. It's just set up for Asians, not Westerners. If you want everything on a platter, sure, go elsewhere. But if you've got the time to explore the bars and clubs and MPs and booking joints then Hatyai will reward you. In fact my best experiences have been in Asian-oriented places like Hatyai, and Batam and Quezon City etc. , not in sex tourist hypermarkets like Pattaya. But maybe that's just me.

(And just as well they put Pink Lady out of its misery. By the end they had exactly four ladies, all of whom had 20+ years working in soapies. They knew their jobs but, uh, no thanks.).

I'm not sure where you got five hours, from. The bus ride to Hat Yai from Georgetown is listed as under 4 hours. Arrival point is near the train station off of the main drag. There are no direct flights from Penang to HDY. You take a plane, then you have a connection in a major city and double back at great expense for a short distance, five hours minimum.

And there is no such thing as one hour flight. You can't just jump on a plane. You go out to the airport, go through security screening, and then wait to get boarded. In the case of KUL, that's a ways out of town. If there is no delay, and your flight arrives on time, you still have to retrieve your checked in luggage. If you cross a foreign border in Asia, there will be customs and immigration to deal with. After that, you will find transportation from the airport into town. More time and expense. I don't think you have flown in a while, but anytime you get on an airplane nowadays, it's a big hassle. You have made references to your "maiden voyage" in other posts, so if you haven't actually done this trip, I think you should avoid giving people direction on it.

Has anyone experienced Dannok, the border town 40 km away from Hat Yai? I hear it's a bit of a mongering location now for Malaysians and Singaporeans and may have taken over Hat Yai's red light district. Is it worth visiting and for how long?

Can anyone tell me what's the best way to get from Penang to Hatyai? I hope there's a luxury bus like those from Singapore to Penang. Where can I board these buses? Should I make advance booking?

I did this trip a couple of years ago enroute to Krabi. I went by minibus easily and cheaply booked from anywhere in Penang. As I remember, about 5 hours. Bus was full but still comfortable even though I'm now very much a SOG (Sad old Git). The border crossing was quite fun: a seething mass of Humanity and yet some order in the apparent chaos! It's all about the experience; go and enjoy.

Did some prelim research on HY but crossed off due to language difficulties. You with your linguistic skills will prob do OK.

If someone is already in Penang, how would it be easier to fly to HDY from KUL? Well, it wouldn't.

I am planning to visit Penang next month and have also done some research. Its a modest ride from there on a bus to Dannok or Hat Yai, with buses regularly departing from Komtar or the terminal in Butterworth. Prices are around $10 US. How big of a hassle could that be? Fly into HDY and you have to get off the plane to you still go through customs. Then you have catch a ride into town from the airport. I don't see how that would be anymore hassle than the land route that drops you off at or near the train station in Hat Yai.
