I don't know why, but I have always thought that the MacDonalds on Pushkinskya had incredibly looking women. (Noticeably more than the others). I think that it is a combination of the nearby universities and some large government buildings with lots of young workers nearby. However, the service at the MacDonalds by Nauki Metro station is much better. (Somehow I don't think the service is of much import to you).

Maybe I can help answer this question, Kharkov has no less than 8 McDonald's, and I think three of these would be an excellent place to chat up students girls, the first one (in no particular order) is located on Prospekt Nauki, (formally Prospekt Lenina) this McDonald's is located right next to the Nauki (sciences) metro station, on the green line. The national university as well as the medical university are close by, many university students visit this McDonald's, but it gets very busy during lunch time, so plan accordingly. Pushkinskya next to the metro station Architecture, (on the blue line) is another McDonald's, this McDonald's is also located near universities; therefore, many students visit this McDonald's as well. Another McDonald's to visit is located in the Ave Mall, or maybe it's Eva Mall, (on the first floor) in any case it's very easy to find. This is ha yl. Sumskya on Constitution Sq, near the metro station Constitution Sq on the red line. A few small colleges are located close to this McDonald's and also many very attractive shop employees visit this McDonald's. All three of these McDonald's are within 20 minutes walking distance from each other, and all in the center. My personal favorite is the one ha Prospekt Nauki. You may want to try and chat up some McDonald's cashiers, very cute girls work at these McDonald's and most are very friendly, but keep in mind, none speak English so knowing conversational Russian is a must. And just to mention, I would take these McDonald's over the McDonald's located on K street in Kiev any day, but then again, I prefer smaller Ukraine cities than Kiev.

Yes. I think you hit the nail in the head. I also wonder why the rule changes. Maybe order from above. I remember 10 years old a hotel security handed me a piece of paper saying that they have girls. The note was written in English. Then the minivan came, girls came out and lined up in the hotel lobby for me to choose. So prostitution was very out in the open back then. But now it's under closed doors. Even more so than in many Western countries.

In Russia they have reached "high income" status according to United Nations. When they cross the threshold of certain income level, say 15000 rubles a month, survival is simply not an issue anymore.

I have to completely disagree with your theory. First of all, in my original post that you quoted, referencing the cat houses advertised in gazettas in Kharkov, I was only talking about 2000 to 2008, so there was no reaching of income level thresholds back then. There were, and still are, plenty of local ladies without jobs or earning just a measly pittance. And the economy went into crisis in 2008, so things did not get better then either.

Also, higher income levels can not be the reason that this form of business isn't able to operate as it did before. It is always controlled by somebody, and some protection is always paid for permission to do business, that's the way it always works, no mystery there. Basically, it's not all that much different than most other sectors of business in the economy. There's nothing nefarious or bad or unfair about that, it's simply a business model for organizations to operate.

The other change, in Russia, is that the escort services completely stopped running any ads in the gazettas around 2012. There were a few VERY nice ladies available from 2008 until 2011, kind of the way the tochkas in Moscow used to be, but around 2012 that stopped. Now you basically need a taxi driver to hook you up for that service, but now you'll only find ladies in the 3 to 6 range available.

I have to disagree with many people here that our biggest competition is other foreigners. No, it's local men. How many foreign men do you guys see in the motherland? Local guys simply progressed from penniless drunks in the 90's to comfortable even affluent class now. Russia and to a lesser extend Ukraine have moved on.

Few work options for most Ukrainian men. It's all cool for them when they are young and pretty but the fun will diminish and the girls know that.

Considering that this is the second largest city in the country, it's interesting and astonishing how limited the options there are.

You really have to wonder what factors are in play, relative to conservatism, corruption, protection, pay-offs, and how all those are tied to, or possibly not connected to this scene.

I can't speak for options found on the internet or in the strip clubs.

In the local gazetta, Prospekt, you used to be able to find only two very non-descript ads in the Zankomstva section way in the back. The ads were nothing more than a mobile number listed for a couple of very depressing run-down apartments in the center of the city, where you could call to get the address, and go for a visit to pay for some company by the hour. Prices were very low, about 200 grivna ($40) for an hour, with limited choices of from usually one or two, to sometimes three or or four ladies, in the 2-5 out of 10 range of quality, in the 22- 30 year old age range, with most of the ladies being unemployed mom's.

If you are not very fluent in Russian, and you call one of these places, you will have zero chance to find them. Your only shot would be to have your driver handle the call, and get you right to the door. But considering the very low quality you will find in these two apartments, compared to the unlimited numbers of 8's and 9's and 10's you see every day everywhere you go in the city, to settle for setting your goals and expectations that low, you should consider yourself about as desperate as you could get, and question what the hell you are even doing there..

Okay. Well, first. It is easy to find a extremely beautiful girlfriend here. I am not young. So the women I date are in the mid-30's to early 40's. But none over a size 2 (maybe 3). Of course, I live here, so that makes it easier to establish a longer term relationship. And my Russian is intermediate (after many years) - that helps to. However, you can find English speaking girls also.

The women that I have gone out with here have been from any type of profession (store clerks, teachers, lawyers, unemployed, engineers, even a ballerina). Most are not looking for the big payday (they are here, but they don't last long with me). Most of these women just want someone who will respect them and treat them well. (Not overly common among men here, from what I understand). Typically, we go out a few times before winding up in bed. And. If you treat them right there also, you be amazed at how passionate they can be and you will soon be meeting them all the time. Unlike professionals. The chance of catching anything nasty is almost zero.

With the summer tourism season upon us, I decided to write an update on Kharkov for those thinking of visiting this fine, in not-so-beautiful, city. Although, Kharkov's Gorky Park is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest and most interesting public parks in the world.

Kharkov is a good place to visit again. The situation in eastern Ukraine has quieted down and there is not talk of unrest in the city and a lot of the previous tension on the streets has disappeared for now.

Traveling here is getting easier. LOT airlines is flying directly from Warsaw to Kharkov. It would be nice if Austrian reinstated their Vienna-Kharkov flight, but that is unlikely to happen soon. If you are in Kiev, the train is about $20 to Kharkov. Or you can fly for around $45 (if you buy in advance).

Prices are low. You can go out to eat at the nicest restaurants in town for about $30 for two people (including drinks). In normal restaurants, it is easy to get by for $15-$20 for two people. (I eat at MacDonalds for under $3. Hotels are really cheap also. You can stay at the best hotel in town, the Kharkov Palace. A true 5* hotel, for under under $90 a night. Good, high quality hotels can be found in the $40-$60 range.

Taxis are ridiculously cheap. You can go anywhere in the city for under $4. Of course, once they hear your accent, it will $6. Of course, the taxi that you may find may be a very old Lada or a new Skoda. Price is the same. At the airport, never pay more than 150 UAH for a trip into the center. (Although they will try to charge you more. If I call the taxi company. The cheapest way. I can get there for under 100 UAH).

As for ladies. There are a variety of choices. For non-Russian speakers. Strip clubs and salons are abundant. Most strip clubs have take out, but I have never used that service. Salons will cost about 800-1000 UAH / Hour (at 27 UAH /$ - about $30-$35). Pretty much all services are available.

For the more adventurous, Mamba is still an okay place to find a playmate. However, it is hit and miss in Kharkov (Kiev is much better for this). To find talent in Kharkov on Mamba takes work and, is possible, the ability to speak Russian.

It is really difficult to explain how I moved there.

Well Cactus, to clarify, I'm still trying to understand how, from as distant as where your home was, that you came to choose Karazin University as your place to study abroad? On my first visit to Kharkov, I didn't even know it was there, or that my apartment was a 10 minute walk away.

My long and varied acquaintances with faculty were a stroke of pure luck, the kind inspired by pioneers like Dr. Skank and CA Traveler, who urged all to push the envelope, take chances, and get up again to try something new each time you fall down. At their insistence, I delved, though there's little depth to dive very deep in this city, unless you have some serious connections. All I had was my trusty driver, so he helped me find an occasional jem at one of two filthy agency flats, or to pick up a newbie working girl at a bus stop. But that kind of mongering isn't anything that anyone should consider as much out of the ordinary.

However, being introduced to the city's best mamachka at 02:00 in the parking lot of some huge hotel miles from the center, by the Syrian bartender from Charlie's Disco, after hours of trying and finally convincing him that I didn't work for the CIA, now that was special. A mamachka like that can't guarantee you'll be assured success, but if you do get lucky, she can be the difference between having just an ordinary time, and heaven.

When I first found myself in the city, alone with ten days of free time, due to my own choosing to break things off with an uninteresting lady from Anastasia Brides, and with absolutely no ability to speak Russian, and no other prospects or contacts, I considered just packing my bags to go home early. Instead, thanks to what I'd read here in ISG, for no particular reason, I just went to chill out one afternoon on a bench in the little park by Lenin's monument. And to answer your question, I would say neither. Maybe sponsorship, but mostly I found normal girls there. My type is non-pro, amateurish girls: you can talk, make offer, be a bit sweet and you can find some top girls there. I won't call it reliable at all since most girls logged in not so often, but messaging and contacting there is definitely among things to do before arrival in Ukraine.
