I had booked Résidence La Falaise, knowing it to be more girlfriendly than, but otherwise comparable to, the two other alternatives in the Akwa district, i.e. Akwa Palace or Parfait Garden. I had asked them to arrange transfer but no one was waiting for me at the airport, which was not entirely surprising, Cameroon being reknowned for its incompetence even by African standards. There were plenty of cabs waiting outside, rate to the hotel = 6000 CFA. Daily price of a room = 37 000 CFA, breakfast not included (it never is in Africa).

Residence La Falaise is a five minute's walk to Mediterranée where I had most of my meals. Across from Mediterranée is a street with three major night-spots: Gogo Banana, Chat Noir and St Pères.

Gogo Banana : pole dancing, 2000 CFA vouchers can be bought from the waitress if you want to tip the dancer. There is a separée where you can repair with a girl for 20000 CFA : she will dance and strip before you on a small table. You're allowed to do virtually everything including sucking and fucking. Time is limited to 20 minutes though and you're only separated from the outside world by a curtain. The price is nonsense since you can have a girl for an all-nighter for the same price, but I gave it a try. I was told sailors liked it because they come straight from the harbour and have no place in town to bring girls. The girls working at Gogo Banana have to wait until closing time to visit you at your place but they will reliably do so if arranged.

Chat Noir : strip joint, gets going as from 10 p.m. Seven to eight girls, some very tall and slim. They strip one after the other and propose to sit near you and please can they have a drink. Drinks are not cheap but they are not outrageously expensive either. Early in the week they finish at 3 a.m. so they are available at that hour, on Fridays and Saturdays there are more customers and they may have to stay on longer (until 4 or 5 a.m.).

St Pères is the disco that attracts the highest number of girls at a reasonable hour (as from 11 p.m., earlier on Fridays and Saturdays). Rates for an all-nighter 20000 CFA, 30000 CFA is regarded as generous. You can adapt your offer to the rating of the girl, tall stunning girls tend to expect more.

I was warned not to try walking at a late hour (say later than 10 p.m.) because of muggings. The trip from St Pères to the Blue Note disco will last for five minutes and cost you 2000 CFA. Blue Notes fills up later than St Pères, in fact many girls start at St Pères and drift to Blue Notes later, say after 1 a.m.

The small Equinox disco is worth a visit. The music is good (mix of African and non African) and there's strip tease on Tuesday I think. Remember that all girls are for sale in Douala, if a girl looks taken ask the waiter to hand over your mobile phone number (it takes 15 minutes to get a number at Orange, nearly opposite Résidence La Falaise).

There's a place called L'Aristocrate that has strip tease and live show (girl+man fucking for all to see) on Tuesday. I missed this, I was at Equinox when it happened but it shows that Douala is getting, if anything, more wicked.

Equinox, Blue Note and L'Aristocrate are all in the same Akwa district, basically the only district of interest apart from the street scene in Bonanjo.

SWs in Bonanjo : you should book a cab for one hour or so (5000 CFA) and ask him to cruise around where there are girls in the street (French = "Voir les filles dans la rue"). Do so only after 11 and preferably on nights when it doesn't rain for they tend no to come out on rainy days. The rates are low (from 10000 CFA) but so is quality.

I was surprised to find out that most girls in Douala were new to me this time. I was told many pros now take the boat to Equatorial Guinea to cater for the offshore drilling crowd in Malabo. This drain of talent has a good side for it makes room for new girls. Anyway, on days except maybe on week-ends, the girls/men ratio is between 6 and 10 to 1. It's a buyer's market!

If you find THE girl you can have yourself tested for Aids at Biomédicam. They are reliable, they run two different HIV tests, draw blood today and get the result tomorrow, 20 euros. Expect the girl not to dare take the test, such is the fear of getting a positive result induced by HIV scare-mongering in Africa. I tested myself again though Diana (my girl) wouldn't. I didn't mind her not undergoing the test. My contempt for HIV is total and I suspect HIV knows it by now. Diane was intrigued by this and even got paranoid after I showed her my bill of health, telling her in jest than I was totally confident of my HIV result because I was a "Marabout", i.e. a medicine-man able to see into the future.

Never keep more than one tenth of your stash in your room for although not all girls are thieves, all will be thievish if given the chance. Plan you trip so as to cover all your expenses in cash (Résidence La Falaise takes visa but don't count on that, bring plenty of cash, preferably 50 or 100 euro notes, and put it in the safe behind reception upon arrival). Leave a sum with a friend to bail you out through Western Union if you're in a spot. Western has an office in the same street as Résidence La Falaise.

The pain in the neck in Douala is mobility. Taxis, or rather the run-down vehicles that dare call themselves taxis, are comparatively expensive. Typical daily budget if you go places : Accomodation 35 000 euros, Girls 50 euros (1.5 girls/day), Taxis 50 euros, Meals 30 euros.

Paris Airport was its own goofy self. I flew back on the day the new hand luggage regulation came into force in Europe and Paris Airport was a shambles. As mentioned in a previous post, flying through Brussels might be a better option.
