Why go to Montevideo?

I was staying in Buenos Aires and wanted to see another country. So I took a weekend trip to Montevideo and Colonia.

Logistics:

I ended up taking a morning Buquebus ferry to Montevideo, spending a night there, then taking a bus to Colonia and taking an evening ferry back to Buenos Aires. The ferry was about $70 to Montevideo and $50 from Colonia back. There was an option to upgrade to business class for about $10. I took the upgrade on the Montevideo leg but not on the return leg because for a 1-HR trip I thought it's not worth it. Business class gets you a separate area on the boat (but the noisy annoying babies are still there), a business lounge while waiting for the boat, and a coffee and 2 croissants at the aforementioned lounge. Overall, for $10 it was totally worth it. Any more and probably not.

The morning ferry departs at 7-something AM, gets to Montevideo just before 10 am. The passport control for both countries is done at the departure side.

Money:

The currency in Montevideo is pesos. I used the ATM at the boat terminal (it's in the departure side of the terminal. Turn right and around the corner after exiting, and re-enter the building, it'll be to your left) -- that ATM only charges 100 pesos for a withdrawal, others in the city charge more. As always, I try to do as few withdrawals as possible to minimize the risks of encountering an ATM with a skimmer on it. At the time of this writing, 1000 pesos is about $28.5, or about 1280 Argentinian.

Hotel:

Because it's winter, hotels are very cheap. I chose a decent hotel 2 blocks away from the main square in the old city; cost me about $50 for the night. I walked there from the ferry terminal and it took me about 30 minutes at moderate pace with photo stops. The walk basically crossed the whole old city. Nice views.

Communication:

Sprint's free international internet works good enough in Uruguay.

Transportation:

Somehow I forgot about Uber so I used taxis the few times I ventured outside the old city. They are about 2 x as expensive as in Buenos Aires (which still isn't much. The most I paid was just over 200 for a morning trip to the bus station, which is around $6). Some have modern meters that show the actual rate to be paid; others show numbers that need to be converted using a provided table. Either way, from my limited experience they aren't out to screw you. You can sit in the front with the driver or in the back.

Other things:

The city is safe but it feels old and worn. It look.

It feels sketchy but everyone says that it's safe. If I found myself in an area in Brazil that looked like Montevideo, I'd start running and wouldn't stop until I got somewhere more civilized. But in Montevideo it's fine. I walked around the old city and outside the old city, no problems.

There is a number of free walking tours available. A great way to get to know the city in 2 hours. One of them is in the morning. The boat arrives early enough to have the time to get to and check in the hotel. Also, there are several small museums around the city, some of which are free. There are guided tours to the top of the weird tall building on the main square, most in Spanish but once a day there's a tour in English. The art museum has a Picasso exhibit but I didn't go. Wanted to, but decided to look for food and girls instead.

The food is noticeably more expensive than Buenos Aires. Good but nothing to write home about.

Women:

Because I only had 1 day there and I generally don't like clubs / bars / all that junk, I went on pasion-uruguay.com. Lots of girls available, most responsive via whatsapp, very similar to Brazil. The prices are generally around 1000-1200 pesos for half an hour and 1500-2000 and up for an hour. Somewhat more expensive than Buenos Aires but still very, very affordable.

That website also has a map with massage clinics and clubs. But I didn't go to any of them.

Based on the pics, the girls aren't all that great. Not terrible but I've seen better in Buenos Aires. I picked a few and settled on two of the "girl next door" types.

I went to one privado in the "tres cruces" area (took taxi, about 15 minutes, just over 200 pesos). The girl looked kinda like her pic but wasn't very attractive and wasn't at all interested in me. The BBBJ and sex were there but almost as if she was simply doing her time.

Had another girl come to my hotel. Likewise, looks like her pic but in person not very attractive either. Same attitude. Not very interested in me or what she was doing, but passable BBBJ and sex.

None spoke english but it was never a problem because my needs are very basic and they generally respond with all the necessary details in whatsapp (price, location, what they do and don't do) so google translate works well.

So it could be that I picked 2 disappointing apples, or that the girls in Uruguay are generally disappointing.

Conclusion: it was a nice trip to see another country. But not a good mongering destination.

Would I return to Montevideo: on my own, probably not. The whole place reminds me of the Fallout universe.

Colonia, on the other hand, is a sweet little tourist paradise. Because it's off season, the city is quiet, the air is fresh and clean, and overall it's nice to sit around and do nothing. Special day trip fares are available from the ferry companies and cost $50 for the round trip. Last ferry is after 8 pm. Not sure about the mongering opportunities.

Seven or eight years ago and after ten to twelve trips to MVD I moved my frequent south america trips to BA. Things just dried up in MVD. Two of my favorite places just disappeared. On my last trip to MVD its was probable day five, with no luck and with at least one bottle of just ok wine under my belt. I'm minding my own business wandering down the street and at a stoplight a fella struck up a casual conversation with me. He spoke perfect English. For the next block we talked about the weather, sports, and of course pussy. I am sure everyone on this site knows where this is going. At my age and after so many times hearing of this scam, well OK I guess I'm just a dumb shit. So me and my new friend are walking down a street near the city center and he says I can take you to a great place just 2-3 blocks away where the girls are young and cheap. Well he really didn't say it that way but me and spike read it that way. So off we go. We reach the place and where buzzed in and up maybe fifteen steps we are greeted by six topless teens. I asked the clerk to call the police saying this guy, who was now at the door, was trying to rob me. The clerk picked up the phone and my new friend said something to him in Spanish and the clerk hung up the phone. My new friend had a smirk on his face. That smirk really pissed me off. Near the door leaning in the corner was a three foot long cam shaft. I picked up the shaft and in a scream like a chinese war lord battle cry I chased this ass hole for just a short distance then stopped to catch my breath. My friend didn't look back and within an instant he was over the horizon.

OK I know this is an old scam that I have read about but never experienced. I guess the lesson here is when spike starts trying to talk you into something that doesn't feel right. Even if your hormones are screaming go for it, just step back, then try to clear your head and do what I would do. YAHOO.

Why go to Montevideo? I wanted to return to Buenos Aires (was there 4 years ago) and this time, stay for a couple of weeks. But I wanted to break the trip up a bit by going to Montevideo. Plus the fact that I've never been to Uruguay; so why not go?

Logistics:

Buquebus:

I decided not to fly, but take a fast ferry across from Buenos Aires to Montevideo and the return in the same fashion. I bought my round trip ticket before I left. Business class was $260, so you could get a cheaper ticket.

The ferry traveled at 39 knots and it took just about 3 hours to cross. The ferry was equipped with food, drinks, and even had a duty free store on board. Passport is required, but customs seemed lacking. Everyone just put their bags through the X-ray machine. I thought it was a nice experience.

Money:

The currency in Montevideo is pesos. I cashed in some US dollars at the terminal; the rate was 26 to 1. Passport was required! When I ran out of pesos, I used the ATMs at the casino near my hotel. The casino had an ATM at each entrance. The ATMs dispersed pesos or US dollars.

Hotel:

I chose the Holiday (Horrible) Inn because of the hotel's location. I had a king room for 95 US per night. The hotel was wore and old; kind of like me. I had a couple of meals at the hotel, just out of the sake of convenience; the food sucked.

Communication:

Because I have the T-Mobile North American plan, life was quite easy. My plan gave me unlimited data at 2 G speed, calls at 20 cents per minute and free texts. Thus, I started using WhatsApp on my regular phone. I was chatting on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Skype; including video calls for no charge whatsoever.

Transportation:

I used Uber for the most part and taxis now and then, depending on the situation and area where I wanted to travel. I also did a lot of walking, which was fine because the city is pretty flat. Taxis were cheap, but Uber was cheaper and safer. Most of the Uber drivers refused tips.

The problem with the taxis was many of them did not have a fucking clue where they were going. For christ's sake, how can you be a taxi driver in a SMALL city and be so damn clueless?

Safety:

I felt completely safe walking around the city. And I was out until 3 or 4 in the morning hunting down clubs and chicas.

Food:

I ate at three restaurants and had a couple of meals at the Horrible Inn; here are my thoughts:

La Pulperia: excellent.
El Palenque in the Mercado del Puerto: very good.
Horrible Inn: pizza and a pasta dish; both tasted bland and sucked.
Primuseum: outstanding!

My Coca-Cola story:

I went to Primuseum around 9 PM and was told that they already started serving from a fixed course menu, but they let me in anyway. I went to check out the fire pit and that is where I met Santiago. He invited me to sit at the bar; he spoke English as well. After he stacked my plate with outstanding food, he chatted to me about the restaurant.

Santiago told me that the restaurant used to be just a place for his father, family, and friends to have great get-togethers. Later it became a great restaurant. I noticed and antique Coca-Cola machine and I shared my story with him. I had my first job when I was at the ripe age of six.

Every day after school, I would go to the corner barber shop and sweep / clean the place for at least an hour. I got paid one bottle of Coca-Cola and it came out of a machine similar to the one that was in Santiago's restaurant. My parents did not have money for Coca-Cola, so I was happy to earn my keep. I worked there for at least two years.

After I finished my story, Santiago handed me a US dime, and told me the machine still worked. Yep, I put the dime in the machine and got me a Coca-Cola, without having to sweep up any hair! The experience at the restaurant was outstanding in all aspects!

Today is Monday and I guess its not a good day for mongering. I think ladies in Montevideo are not that beautiful like Brazil. They are different in face and you can't see much good shaped bodies here but there are lots of tall girls here that are delicious!
