If they really expect those rates, they may have trouble competing.

My first trip to SXM I used a taxi and the driver's driving around the island got me enough info about the island so I could comfortably rent one my next trip. You might go to google maps and look at the island and print off streets if you plan to drive yourself. I can assure you.. you probably won't get lost if you only drive to Phillipsburg, airport and near by brothels.

I do not suggest staying downtown, but that is only my 2 cents.

Planning my first trip to SXM, and wondering about taxis vs. Rental. There seem to be advocates of both, for various reasons.

I'll be staying in downtown Philipsburg, and the action seems to be (almost) walking distance.

I'm tempted to go with taxis. To avoid worrying what might happen to the car, parking issues, etc.

My biggest concern would be getting stranded at a club late at night. Are there taxis that reliably hang around the clubs for customers? (Seaman's, Carolina's, el Capitan).

I'd prefer to avoid having to shedule a pre-arranged pickup, have one wait for me, etc.

If not, would the clubs call a taxi. Or would asking get me a dirty look?

For rental. My hotel recommends taking a cab from the airport and rent a car through them. Maybe it will cost more (maybe less), but it should avoid parking hassles at the hotel.

My tentative plan is to take a taxi from the airport and play it by ear the first night. Then rent a car through the hotel if it seems advisable.

I'll be there 2/17. 2/22 if anyone is looking for a wingman, share the expense of a rental, etc.
