A study published this week in The Lancet showed a high mortality rate described to the media as "horrific" by the study authors among older patients, particularly those with underlying conditions. The study itself looked at critically ill patients with a median age of 62 who were treated at two New York City hospitals in March and April. Looking at those over age 80 who were put on a ventilator, the authors found that more than 80 percent did not survive. By comparison, no patients under the age of 30 died at the two hospitals, and only a small number in that age group had to be put on ventilators.

In April, another study published in the medical journal JAMA looked at the outcomes of 5,700 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in the New York area, finding that only 3. 3 percent of 1,151 patients who required ventilation had been discharged alive as of April 4, with almost a quarter dying and 72 percent remaining in the hospital. This is a significantly higher death rate than what's usually seen for patients put on ventilators for other reasons in the past, such as bacterial pneumonia or collapsed lungs.

The main reason people with COVID-19 have required ventilators is that they developed a condition known as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), inflammation in the lungs that makes it extremely difficult to breathe. But there's a specific subgroup of patients known as "happy hypoxics" who may have different needs.

These are people who show up in the emergency room with terrible oxygen levels, whose X-rays reveal severe pneumonia, but are still able to talk and whose only real complaint is some shortness of breath," she explains. For these patients, although their vital signs indicate they should be on a ventilator.

Instead, doctors now try giving these patients less invasive treatments, such as very high doses of supplemental oxygen, either through a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, the same machine used to treat sleep apnea, or through a supercharged oxygen system known as a high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC).

A paper published on April 22 in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine found that when hypoxic patients were given these types of supplemental oxygen and positioned flat on their bellies, only about a quarter ended up requiring ventilation. Kaplan says this approach not only appears to improve patient outcomes, but has also prevented the overuse of ventilators, averting the ventilator shortage physicians had originally feared.

What the article has wrong is that there were not just a "subgroup" of happy hypoxics but all patients with Covid, and putting 25% of patients of hypoxic Covid patients on a ventilator did not happen in the future as doctors got more comfortable watching these patients. Subjectively, it was when patients said they doctors considered ventilators. And objectively, elevated carbon dioxide in the blood was a marker that someone was with impending respiratory failure and was likely needed to be put on a ventilator.

Putting a hypoxic Covid patient on a ventilator solely for "pumping oxygen into the body" was committing malpractice. Period.

OTOH, if you and Viliany have low oxygen levels and Covid, by all means tell the doctors how smart you are and request to be put on a ventilator. Just tell me before hand so I can buy a life insurance policy and cash in on your demise.

The thought process was that you put the really sick ones on ventilators because it is "doing something". It was hard to criticize a doctor putting someone on a ventilator who was breathing quickly and oxygen levels were down. It was pretty evident though that almost everyone put on them died. Instead, positive pressure was used and higher levels of oxygen were used, and people did much better.

So yeah, really sick people were put on ventilators, and it was observed that most died. Cuomo's call for thousands of ventilators like the lockdowns, hysteria about the vaccines, washing hands, social distancing, and masks were all shown later to either have done nothing or been harmful. That you do not see that is not a surprise. You masturbate to the government narrative.

Our resident "I only pretend to be a doctor on ISG" seems to forget (but in reality he never really knew) that in the early days of COVID (which was a "novel" - meaning new - coronavirus) doctors had to rely on what they knew about prior coronaviruses. And what they knew was that prior coronaviruses spread by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face. Therefore, since prior coronavirus outbreaks were not airborne, they advocated for disinfecting surfaces, disinfecting the surfaces of groceries, for washing your hands after touching a potentially infected surface, never touching your face and things like that. Because those measures work on a coronavirus that behaves as medical professionals thought it would. I clearly remember watching a video early on in the pandemic about how you were supposed to wipe down groceries. It wasn't the video that followed but any sane person can get the idea. Medical professionals didn't advocate for masks since prior coronaviruses were not airborne. They didn't advocate for social distancing because prior coronavirus outbreaks weren't airborne. And this is how we got to various idiots claiming all of the preventive measures were wrong.
