Early treatment is key to avoid the hospital. That in mind, I'm wondering which test is better? Wouldn't a PCR give a physician more time to admin early treatment than the rapid? I always insist on both tests at the urgent care clinic.

For early screening for the purpose of treatment, yes. But for late stage disease, PCR is often positive for weeks and months due to shedding of inert vial DNA. It's not a false positive per se, but essentially clinically irrelevant.

For the purposes of screening people to prevent transmission, the rapid antigen test is the most appropriate test. Not to say that negative antigen tests rules out transmission completely, but it the low number of infectious antigen-negative but PCR-positive people make it negligible at the population level.

In many hospitals, an antigen-negative test is all that is required to allow a patient to be placed in a non-isolation room. Furthermore, after 10 days from a positive test, isolation precautions are removed from that patient.
