i've been in managua every month since 2004 so i think i can safely say this as a fact and i can differentiate the two (or three if you want to throw in grenada).

in those 7 years, i have been to granada once and that was the 2nd day i was in the country (and never to grenada as it is a huge commute from managua) and have never been back (to granada) as it is a huge waste of time.

Yes avoid Granada (Grenada is a Caribbean island nowhere near Nicaragua) , unless you are with NGO workers, tourists with sandals with socks on underneath, old, really old people, or your Mom.

You need usable Spanish, as there is literally no English to speak of there.

Don't drive. Ever.

Buy a SIM on Movistar, as you cannot get by without a phone, and it is inexpensive. You need an unblocked GSM phone, and quad band.

Avoid obvous bad barrios and Mercado Oriental unless accompanied.
