After a week in Medellin I plan to fly to San Jose for a week before returning home. I notice Costa Rica has some requirements regarding yellow fever vaccination for travelers from Colombia. But I'm not clear if it applies to travelers able to prove (with hotel receipts) they didn't visit infected areas. Anyone can help me on this?

LOL. Not so fast grasshopper. I don't know anyone who has ever been fucked on the safe, but I know plenty of people who have gotten fucked on a debit card. Not to mention, last time I was in Rio I wasted half a day running back and forth from the ATM to call Charles Schwab on the phone because they suspected fraud on my card after I popped it into the first ATM at the airport in Rio. Same freaking thing happened to me in Colombia. Luckily I have 3 banks and was able to use one of my other cards with success. Cash is king.

Yeah, had my ATM card cloned as well a few months ago, and it absolutely had to have occurred at the only bank I use, in Ipanema. I never use this card for point of sales, only ATM. This is a Bradesco branch with a large lobby, and normally there is a security guard in the lobby, so I thought it was one of the safer places. I think my cloning happened the only time I went after business hours and the guard was not there. Most of the machines were out of large bills so I tried several machines in the lobby, they have about 8. Must have happened then, though I did not notice any obvious modifications to the machines. They must have got my pin as well as they made ATM withdrawals with the clone in Sao Paulo and Florida. Again, I always cover my hand when entering pin, so not sure how they get it, unless the capture device can also record the pin?

Well, you asked the freakin' question: "Why would anyone every(sic) use in-room safes in a third-world country?".

And I gave you an unemotional answer. Maybe your response is just an attempt to camouflage the fact that your claims, like most of your posts, are not based in the real world.

Can you answer why, multiple times, you claim to have 25 years mongering experience in Tijuana, and another time you claim to be 23 years of age (and just dropped from an NFL team)? Do you even know the real world?!

Why would you ever lock your car? Big deal. Someone can just break the glass to get into it. Or if they have locksmith tools... Stop fearmongering and being afraid of your own shadow. I have been to over 100 countries and used in room safes in most of them. Never a problem. Half the time i leave my stuff right in the open next to the TV anyway. Guys are running around sticking their bare dicks into strangers's mouths and into their holy of holies, yet usage of a hotel safe is where they draw the line. Give me a fucking break. Any safe can be broken into, not just the ones in third world knock-off hotels. The only guarantees in life are death and taxes.

Why? I guess as a 23yo (sorry to read about you being cut from an NFL team, whatever that is), you don't have enough real-world experience to know the pros and cons of hotel room safes.

For example, I am sure that the Shangri-La in Global City, Manila would have extremely good safes and SOPs to protect guests' valuables. But the safes in many down-market hotels in the good ol' USA might be rather insecure! Get the idea? BTW, some of the safes in cheaper hotels can easily be opened by any intruder.

Guys, making a little trip down to CR after several years away. Just a few questions:

1. I'm trying to get some insight on some other hotels besides the obvious selections. Does anyone know what the guest fee is at Balmoral in San Jose? Anyone ever stay there?

2. Does Hotel Santo Tomas ever let guests in for a fee? Or is just no guests ever?

3. Is Pirate Club still open and still good? I haven't heard of anything about it lately. Is is open in the early afternoon around 12:30 pm? Every day? I used to love this place.

4. Guys a ton of nice MP's in San Jose, but (other then zona2), what MP generally has the highest quality and selection? I have limited time, to explore all the options.

5. Did Scores close?

6. Guys, is strip club Kamur any good anymore? Still open?

7. I think there is one strip club in Jaco? What is the name / location? Price / quality of talent? Anyone recommend?

8. Any working talent in Playa Hermosa near Jaco, or in Montezuma?

I have learned a lot from this board over the years. I thought that I contribute my own two cents, for what its worth. I have visited CR seven times prior to 2005. I stopped going to CR in 2005 because the quality was down, and I also had a business to run. I am 62, with six figure home paid for, and son in college. Overall, life is fine. I work hard for my money and place value on dollars earned. So, I decided to pay a quick four day visit to CR when my wife decided to spend some time with her sister who is ill. I stayed at the Del Rey for the entire four days. The quality is definitely down, but there are still diamonds in the rough. I was disappointed in the mercenary attitude of some of the ladies. All services were negotiated up front and written and shown on my phone calculator. There were some that did not come off the $100. I simply passed by. I was able to get the be team with a pleasant and grateful attitude for $60 - $70. There were three chicas, that despite negotiations, tried to upsell me in the room. They gamble that because I had paid $11 for Del Rey guest fee, I will accept bullshit. They each tried to charge extra for kiss, BBBJ, even though all of these were negotiated upfront. I simply opened my room door and told each of them to leave. The mood had been killed by then. I can afford to pay $100 for a chica, but I refuse to do so, because once the bar is set, it keeps rising. Many of our follow brothers will be put out of the market. As a matter of fact, because of the decrease in quality and haggling of the chicas, the number of Americans at the Del Rey is sharply down. There are more ticos now. This was never the case a few years ago. For the person who travels once or twice a year for vacation, a $100 may seem to be nothing, but for a regular traveler, it becomes unaffordable and out of the reach for most. I will give a breakdown of my expense to put things in a true perspective:

Airfare: $800 (out of Newark, business class, because of arthritic knees. Direct flight).

Parking at Newark: $135.

Hotel Del Rey: $319.

Transportation to / from airport: $60.

Airport taxes: $25.

Meals / Drinks for 4 days: $400.

Taxis / Tips: $100.

We are nearly at $2 k, if you add $100/ chica for ten chicas over four days, you are looking at nearly $300/ chicas overall. At this rate, this is unsustainable for a regular traveler. There will be less of our buddies in CR, and the quality will continue to go down, because there are less travelers and therefore less business for the chicas. Some will say, it is my money and I can spend it however I want, but you have to look at the overall big picture. At $300/ chica, I can get a beautiful Latina escort from Colombia in Philly or DC, spend an hour with her, and be back at work the same day. The lure of CR will begin to wean. We need to keep a handle on cost for the good of the chicas and for all of us. Right now, I am brushing up on my Spanish; my next trip will probably be to Medellin. I have visited this city at least four times, but to truly enjoy it, you will need a working knowledge of Spanish. CR is close to the US, but prices and service are getting out of hand. My own two cents. Take it for what it is worth!

Thanks for this post and the information. I've been trying HARD to figure out why I'd want to pay much more for a vacation to Costa Rica next year instead of the Dominican Republic but EVERYTHING I read suggests that DR is still a major bargain when compared to expensive CR.

My dear brother: More $$ does not equal better service. I prefer the 5 or 6 with a great personality and attitude, than an 8 or 9 with a bad attitude. If you go on the local board in my humble little city in the USA I wouldn't want most of those guys coming down to Costa Rica. I like the fact that its a little "out of reach" for most people. I am a bit younger- I like the 21-25 year old hard body Colombians. These girls are 100 to 150 on average. If you have good Spanish speaking skills your negotiations will go much smoother. As this poster stated- If you want top quality pussy and don't want to pay a lot of money then Medellin is the place to go. I have a novia in Medellin and get there as often as I can. The down side to Medellin for me is the fact that it is still a very dangerous city and I like the relaxed and laid back atmosphere of the beach at Jaco. Medellin is more of frenetic and crazy place. An American tourist was murdered right in Poblado within the last few weeks. You will almost never hear these kinds of stories in CR.

To each his own-- but I find the last 2 posters a little misleading to new guys coming to CR. If you are coming and looking for 60 $ girls its not going to be a fun or easy trip. If you have a pocket full of cash and don't mind spending 100's and 150's then you will have the time of your life. The sky is the limit!
