The only problem I had with my 10-day trip to San Jose in late April (trip #9) was the enormous work load that confronted me upon my return. Thus, my trip report has been delayed but will soon be forthcoming. Yes, the ISG CR board has been pretty slow, lately, and I'll try to play my little part in resuscitating it a bit.
Because I have come down here a number of times, I have managed to cultivate some casual friendships with some pretty cool ladies and a satisfying "comfort level" with the San Jose scene in general. Most of the locals I have encountered have been friendly, and none of them have been either overtly "resentful" and/or "knife-wielding." Yes, there are some pretty rough areas in San Jose, and it is not a very good idea to do much walking alone after 8 or 9pm, but, by taking some pretty basic precautions, I have never found the general environment to be very threatening.
I fully confess that, on occassion, I have paid the dreaded "cien," but almost always for multiple-hour sessions with the understanding that this admittedly inflated figure covered tip and taxi as well. Yes, prices in general are going up in San Jose, but there are still some bargains to be had.
More to follow...

Xion149,
Sorry for the confusion, the US$50 chica fee was at the Holiday Inn, I found that pretty late. The HDR fee still at US$10.
JEurope,
You are right about the walking, it is very close but I didn't like the "atmosphere" and even the girls at the HDR reccomend me to take the cab. You might call me paranoic but $2bucks doesnt make a difference to me and I rather be on the safe side at this respect.
About the cigars, it was a guy at Sportsmen who offered me, I don't smoke and neither I'm an expert on cigars, but do the math: 30 cigars at US$100 is about $3 per cigar and if you add the nice wood box it doesnt really sound as a bad deal. I have seen Cohibas for more than US$5 each that's why I consider the package.
Salud!

Where did you buy the cigars? If off the guy on the street then you way over paid by about $85.
Great report T, it sounds like you had a great time which is all that really matters. Getting a very odd error message telling that my message is to short that it must be 10 characters long which it clearly is.

Posts: 22Just came back from CR... my takeaways
I just came back from a weekend trip to San Jose. Quite interesting in terms of mongering, it was very useful all the reports but I will try to share some of my learnings,
Arrived to SJO during the afternoon, my first visit to the country, so I tried to do what I usually do when arriving to a new country: buy a sim card to have a local cel number. Couldn't find any booth at the airport to buy it. Surprise. The telecomm industry is totally state owned. And the unefficiencies are very clear: no blackberry service, no cel phone numbers and very expensive roaming service. Ok. Not big deal.
I did my reservation for the Holiday Inn which is walking distance from the Hotel del Rey (did this because I used my priority points). Indeed it was close, but for sure it is not for a walk after 7-8pm, better take a taxi ($2dollar).
Hotel del Rey is just what everybody has said in the forum: Disneyland for mongers. I arrived about 7:00pm and there where about 100 girls. All styles and all willing. There I found that regardless of what has been said in the forum. Bargaining is not an option. Or at least is not regarding the cuties. US$100 is the norm.
I found a nice Tica, and make the proper arrangements. Went to my hotel and I found that all girls must register at the front desk and this is the norm for almost all the hotels. Good for me.
She was good, cbj, lk and a nice attitude.
Finish what we did and went back to Del Rey (I was starving), went to Restaurante del Rey (in front of HDR) and found that aside is a club called Cayo Largo (or something like that). Packed with girls (looking for business) with live music and the chance to dance with the girl of you preference.
Met a Colombian girl at Cayo Largo. Nice but to focus on the business. She was pushing while I was looking to know if she will be having a good attitude during the sex. She push so much that I decide to skip, took it as a signal that she could have been very mechanic.
Went back to HDR and found a couple of other Colombians (they told me that about 80% of the girls are from Colombia), I close the deal with Jessica and had a great time with her (still cbj and lk which looks like the norm also)
Great first day in SJO. Went to sleep with a big smile and a tired dick.
Next morning I found that the hotel was charging US$50 dollars per girl. So far my account was US$100. Cancelled the rest of my reservation and found a room at Sportsmen's lodge (again thanks to the forum)
Sportsmen is good, the rate was very attractive (US$59) against HDR ($90), and they don't charge for any girl (HDR charges US$10). It is 4-5 blocks away from HDR but still not reccommended for a walk, take a cab.
My room was very noisy, (probably that's why it was the only available).my reccommendation will be. If you plan to stay in Sportsmen be sure to make your reervation well in advanced. There are some room in the new ale that are quite nice. The room El Rey is quite big with a kitchenette, this one and Las Palmas are the best rooms (nice and quiets). Second alternative will be Ilusion and Hermosa. (Free wireless internet and continental breakfast also counts)
Took a short tour around SJO. Lots of traffic, nothing really interesting. Probably the most interesting thing was the Cow Parade that is now in SJO.
HDR was 90% gringos, this is a pretty gringo friendly environment, where all the staff speaks English and the girls either speaks or knows the basics. Same in sportsmen where I found that the chicas speaks much better English.
Tested the Sportsmen's policy about no charge for girls and it was true!
Overall, it was a nice trip. Lots of girls. Nice girls. Paradise for mongers. Couldn't find no GFE nor BBBJ but still good service
BTW, I found that they were selling cuban cigars. Not sure if they were original (most probably not) but if you want to take a nice present for somebody (very well packed) they were selling a nice wood box with 30 Cohibas (with seals that looks original) for US$100
Hope this helps anybody and hope you enjoyed as much as I did
Salud!

I don't know about the last part of your statement about the knife-wielding locals because I have spent as much as 5 weeks in CR walking very late at all over the place hell even down to Castro's and never had an problem. Well unless you count the tranny that keeping grabbing my package on my way back from Muses at that park behind the Key Largo this ONE time but i digress.
Other then that Xion your comments are spot on.

Oh by the way Chili next time keep your eyes open because all the signs were there that some thing just "ain't quite right". However it appears that you were thinking with the little head and he was making so much "noise" that for a few moments you were confused that is until the knives made and appearance and then the "little head" was not making a sound!

What has happen to this area. Let's review, about a month ago I posted that I got robbed by 2 tico's with knives as long as your arm. Not even one responce to my post (had 2 I'm's. Thank you) there are far and few reports with not much being said about trips, girls, or what is going on. This was a great info site as it really helped me on my first few trips and I have met some great guys from it. With my trip to the D. R. In about 40 days I can find at least 10 posts every day for the D. R. With photos, why can't we get that passion back into the san jose area. Hell I got robbed and I still love the place. Also this site has great info on the asian areas I plan to go to in nov. But san jose will always be like a second home to me (living in florida) its such a easy trip. Lets keep San Jose section alive and up to date!
