Earlier this year I went to the Claro store in the Los Molinos mall and registered my phone with my US passport. The lady who registered it could very well have used someone's cedula, but my passport was the only ID I gave her. That office has some people who don't know how to deal with foreigners. I went there to buy a data plan and was told I have to have a Colombian cedula. After some discussion and him consulting with another person, he allowed me to enter and I bought the plan without a problem.

I also went to Los Molinos. It might be a new policy or a bug in their system. A lot of Colombian online systems are pretty shitty, so that might be a possibility.

I also thought I'd share a negative FB experience from several days ago, but you all decide what you want to do.

When you checkout they will ask you for your passport. I didn't have it but knowing my passport number worked for me. They will find you in the computer system using your passport number and register the new phone to you. I prefer to keep my USA smartphone locked in my apartment safe.

I got a message from Claro saying that if I don't register my phone, it'll be blocked. Sure, I know this. Same thing would happen on Tigo and I did get blocked before by Tigo. But before I can register with my US passport, but now neither the *611# (star 611 pound) USSD method, nor the Mi Claro app would accept my passport. Going to a Claro store and waiting for an hour didn't help either. The only documents accepted, according to the guy at Claro, are local and foreigner cedulas. Assuming no Colombiano is going to give you their cedula to use, what can you do? Sure if you leave Colombia before 30 days you won't have an issue, until you come back with the same phone.

You don't have to go to a store at all. You can register on the Claro website or on the phone itself via the miclaro web site. Any nine digit passport number will work.

I suggest you try another Claro office, albeit this may be a new policy about who can register a phone. Another issue is that if you don't use your phone or buy data or recharge it with money you will lose the number after 60 days regardless whether it's registered or not.

A friend of mine bought a phone in Medellin and the shop registered it for him somehow and he was in Medellin for 60 days.

So you might go to a phone shop and ask for assistance, they may have some way to help you, especially if you grease the skids with some Plata.

And stay away from Tigo as a carrier, they don't seem to have many offices.

August 27th. Friday.

Flew out of Tijuana on Aeromexico and arrived in Medellin around midnight. About 8 hours of flying time with a 2 hour layover in Mexico City. I arrived at the Nutibara hotel around 1:30 AM paying 80 k pesos for a taxi.

Nutibara is an older hotel, historic in it's day, on one end of Plaza Botero in El Centro, (the downtown area). It's fairly basic and staff did not speak English, but it is in a good location for some tourist attractions and for street girls as well as many daytime casas.

Based on reports in this forum, I had some concerns about safety before coming. By day, I would say that the El Centro area is mostly safe and swarming with large numbers of locals. Plenty of people out and about even past night fall for a few hours. Still, in and around El Centro, there are many sketchy looking streets with homeless and trash and although I never witnessed any crime, I had taxi drivers warn me of the petty crime and to keep phones and valuables hidden from sight.

Since it's Medellin, most of the flavor in town is paisas or a few vennies. Out of curiosity, are Asian chicas or white / eastern European / Russian chicas available anywhere in Medellin?

Granted it has been a while since I have been in Colombia but yes my Canadian bank card worked in the ATMs of the larger banks and at that time there was no exchange fee. There is now. If you want to get US dollars without getting tagged for the exchange fee. You can use the Norbert gambit if you have a stock trading platform and a US dollar account. Just buy a dual traded stock on the TSX. Transfer it to your US trading account and it will be converted at todays exchange. Cash it into your US dollar account and save the 2 percent exchange fee- saves about 180 on $10 k. Really not worth doing unless you are exchanging a lot of money.

I am almost set up to do that. Have all the accounts set up except the US cash account within my brokerage accounts. Could set up a sweep account for my US trading account, and then transfer it out to a US dollar bank account hopefully.

How often does this happen? I've never ran into this issue, but I don't partake in el centro chicas.

This happened in Boca Chica in the DR and I've never had anything like that in Centro.
