As you probably know, the Liberal Govt swore to "reform" (read: decimate) the WA sex industry during their '08 election campaign and have promised to table new prostitution legislation within the next 3-6 months.
According to leaks and media comments from the Liberal party, the proposed legislation will include:
- A tiny number of brothels will be granted permission to operate; only in industrial areas, and only in three or four council districts.
- Brothels will need to obtain licenses which, amongst other things, will be very expensive (driving the prices up).
- Sex workers working in brothels will be required to register, which will involve police checks, mandatory health checks and even fingerprinting (forcing most sex workers out of legal brothels and into "underground" operations).
- PRIVATE/INDEPENDENT SEX WORK WILL BE BANNED COMPLETELY. Over two thirds of WA's sex workers are currently working privately. These women (and men) will become criminals under the new laws, as will their clients.
There is also a small, but vocal, sector of the Liberal party advocating for the introduction of the "Swedish Model", where CLIENTS of sex workers are criminalised. The Libs have said no to this model in its entirety, but have not ruled out including SOME elements of it...for example, increasing the severity of criminal penalties for clients.
As you can imagine, sex workers DO NOT SUPPORT the proposed changes. The Government has blatantly (and publically) refused to consult with the sex industry on this legislation, so sex workers have no option but to take direct action.
In the first week of November, Scarlet Alliance (the Australian Sex Workers Association), along with WA sex workers and some international guests, will host private meetings and a public symposium on the inherent risks of the Liberal proposal and offer 'best practice' models of sex industry law reform.
The first meeting, to be held on Monday the 1st of November, is open to ALL sex industry supporters - including sex workers, brothel owners, health workers, human rights advocates, politicians, police, unionists, feminists, councillors, lawyers and, of course, partners and clients of sex workers. If you are interested in finding out what's happening and/or having input into the campaign, I strongly encourage you to attend the meeting. Obviously there will be NO requirement to announce which 'supporter' group you fit into, or even to give your real name. It will be completely anonymous.
The second meeting on Wednesday the 3rd of November will be a public forum that anyone - for, against or otherwise - can attend. Perth City detectives conducted a two day operation in the Highgate area targeting people soliciting street prostitutes.

The 'residential area' bit has nothing to do with it. It is illegal to run a brothel anywhere in Western Australia.
This is a political ploy to pave the way for the Liberal Govt's fucked up new sex industry legislation - nothing else. Brothels will be increasingly raided and exposed in the media over the coming months, particularly Asian parlours and/or those in residential areas, to prove a point that the new laws are needed. Asian sex workers are the perfect target, because trafficking/sex slave hysteria and inherent racism make it easier for the media to demonise them and the community to 'Other' them.
I know I say this a lot, but it's even more important at the moment: PLEASE be extra careful when giving details about individual sex workers and parlours on sites like these. If possible, don't be explicit about illegal acts (BBBJ, BBS, unprotected DATY, etc) on the public forums (use PMs) and don't respond to requests for graphic detail from new members with one post to their name. The police can't act without evidence... don't do their job for them!
Also, please keep your eyes on legislative developments and, if at all possible, consider putting in a submission against the proposed new laws.
