Yes, just go to Samui, find a girl you like and ask her, if she likes you, she will go. You will have to pay a bar fine for all the days you take her out and also pay the girl.

No, there is almost no action in Phangan... except for Farang ladies, if that is what you are after ;)I was just in Phangan and there is indeed action, though nothing like Phuket. Rent a motorbike (200B) and drive between Had Rin (where I stayed) and Thong Sala. Around Ban Tai you will see a whole strip of beer bars with plenty of girls just begging for you to stop by, since it is low season. I was able to get a beautiful 20 year old stunner (solid 9) for 1300B LT (st was same price given a free room). The girl rode on the back of my motorbike back into Had Rin. The bars are doing so poorly because of the economy, you could easily negotiate for a beautiful lady here. Though I haven't experienced KS, I would def recommend Phangan given what I've heard about prices in Samui.

My investigation team reports was not Miki but was Chumpoo the one I took. Miki has bigger lips (lol), but seemed to have a bit of attitude so I diverted to Chumpoo, not resulting in a better choice.

You might be well right, as sometime I am wondering how far they can go (money-wise) with that attitude. A "long term" relationship gives probbaly npre money and less work for the pussy.
Still I found some gems very willing last year. But one has moved to Chaweng where she runs a bar and the other ...who knows?
Just came back from Lamai where I stayed for 10 days. This was not my first trip to Lamai but I have never been there in June. I always went to Lamai somehow Novemer-December or January-May.
So concerning this June the low season:
Weather:
excelent - no rain, just some really hot days at end of trip (mid of june)
Hotels:
excelent because of low season prices and plenty of rooms available
Nightlife:
More girls than customers! Some bars closed due to low season. Some bars are full of girls but no customers, so if you go there u are alone with 6-8 girls :-) The girls are really desperatly looking forward to get their farang.
Prices for LT 1.000-1.500 Baht. If they start with 2.000 Baht just offer them 1.000 or 1.500 Baht they will be really happy. I always pay this prices and if I really like the girl I do not negotiate 1.500 down but with 1.000 most of them will be really happy...
Now the low season disadvantage:
In some bars the girls were just not acceptable I would not have taken them for 100 Baht. But there are still a lot of atractive and nice girls around and even super atractives and super nice girls. But u have to look around and be patient. Do not expect to find your favourite after visiting the first 3 bars.
After some tries which were really ok in general I found my "dream girl" and had a really great time!
For me this time was my best visit to Lamai and next year in June I will be back for sure!!!

If you want guaranteed 'discretion' go to one of the resorts with bungalows rather than a standard hotel/guest house. No one would notice who you were bringing back.
I've never experienced a non BG friendly place in all of Thailand and especially considering the economic climate I'd be gobsmacked if a place gave you any hassle providing you didn't rub it in everyones face.

FunTimes69 - I have found some hotels are not friendly to bringing guests back if they aren't registered in various parts of Thailand. Others are fine with it if you pay a fee. What Nocal probably means is whether he can bring a girl back without hassle and without paying an extra fee. That is specific to the hotel.
The suggestion of bungalows is good, but even there you can run into issues - usually there is some point of access to the property that can be controlled. So better to be sure about the hotel's policy beforehand.
Best advice Nocal: find a hotel you think you are interested in, and shoot them an e-mail asking. They'll tell you. And then you;ll have it in writing from them if problems emerge later. Make sure you ask whether there is a joiner or guest fee. Other guys' experiences are a good guide, but policies do change, so better to ask up front...

Why not rent a villa? That way you will be at home and can bring in anybody you please. Be careful, though, as you will not have security support as in a hotel.

The beach is nice, the weather too, the atmosphere relaxed and tropical sleepy. Just what I need in winter time.

the very local places for locals, namely sort of KTV are not very much recommended. Even by and for expatriates. Some thai do not like farang gather in their own joints. So they will make you feel you are not much welcome.
If you go to places like Reggae and green mango you will mix with tourists and some local girls not strictly in the mongering business or there for business.
Samui (as any place) has a lot of legitimate jobs not at all related with mongering activities (take bank clercks, supermarket employees etc etc) and also they want to have fun, dance, party. I do not exclude some freebie can come out from some of those places.

Just some basic info as nobody seems to care about Koh Samui anymore:
It is quit on Samui. Very quiet.
Just a short note about some nice places on Samui:
Bangrak (close to Big Buddha) is a nice place to hang out in the evening.
Skybar, M&M Bar, Whispers Club, Cosmic Bar, Kinaree 2 are good spots to find some nice ladies.
Bar fines are usuall 300 THB [Skybar 200 THB].
Short time is usually 1,000 THB. You can find 2 nice short time motels [Inn] pretty close ... Maya Inn and Petcherat Inn.
The ladies know where the places are. 300 THB for 2 hours, 500 THB 12 hours. [for the Inn - not the ladies :-)]
Ladies are usually friendly and provide good service.
Stunners are hard to find though.
Good "farang" food in Riks Restaurant [Ghost road, 75 meters on the left side], good musik and the best pool table arround.
Get a motorbike to get arround!Indeed Bangrak is a good spot to stay! I stayed there last month and enjoyed myself in all the bars and restaurants. It's peaceful, quiet and worth it visiting!
Chaweng: good for dancing.
Riks Restaurant: Great food,good and friendly staff and that pool table......wow!!!

Thanks for the update regardin Koh Samui. I was 12 times at the island, last time 2, 5 years ago. I loved Chaweng and can advise anyone who loves the "old Samui" to take a short ride by boat to Koh Phangang. There is a small bar scene and a laid back carribean atmosphere. Hope I can return by the end of 2009 as planned.

Just came back from Koh Samui. While there, I tried looking for Nice Massage beside Mint Massage but couldn't find it after making a few rounds and getting many stares from the massage girls.
As I was leaving, I saw a new place (Nok Massage) opposite Mint and nearest to the junction to the main road. Pushing my luck, I entered and expected to see Nok based on the descriptions given. Unfortunately she was not there. Since I was there, I took a massage from one of the girls and made some conversation. It seems BBBJ and FS is available on site.
When I finished my massage and was about to leave, guess who was outside. Nok!!! My massage girl introduced her as the boss. It seems she has her own place now.

Just back from Samui. A lot more bar girls in Chaweng than there used to be. Though I still think Lamai is the better place. Loads of girls in both and very few customers. Quality not in the Bangkok league.

I can't see why Samui seems to always gets a bad wrap I love the place because it's a bit more laid back. I've visited the island six times, a friend of mine who recently passed away owned a bar called The Open Mind Place at the other (quiet) end of Cheweng Beach Road. I've traveled all over Thailand and I'll always go back to Samui. Try to avoid the rainy season is about the only negative thing I'd say.

DAY 1
I was woken up by banging on the door at 9AM. Check-out. WTF I’m leaving at 11. I guessed they must have mixed up rooms. I had booked my taxi from the reception and we left at 11, arriving at the airport more than 2 hours before departure. But I’ll rather arrive an hour too early than 5 minutes too late. I had booked online with Bangkok Airways the day before, 3170B. The domestic terminal is rather dull. But now they have added a coffee shop in the restaurant, a significant improvement for me who like Italian style coffee while waiting.
Flight to Samui on time. A minibus to Lamai is 150B, and I checked in to Lamai Inn 99 right on the beach. Did not book in advance. They didn’t have bungalows available, so I settled with a Garden view room for 900B which has a large size room safe. The pool view rooms are bigger and slightly nicer, but I was having a horror picture on my mind of noisy kids in the pool at 8 o’clock in the morning. Rainy day today.
Evening and time to hit the bars. I did a recce before it got dark and the bar scene is close to the hotel and much larger than expected. Nothing compared to Pattaya of course, but very promising for a place like Lamai. I did a quick walk around the complex again in the evening and sat down in one of the first bars on the second round. Some cuties there and that was the parameter I was using. First girl was sufficient, 20 year old, but the girl behind the bar was more according to my taste. Ask her about family and she has no kids, but she is the only one wearing a dress and I try from another angle. Does she send money home? Yes support mama, no papa, and yes a 5 year old. I finish my beer and move on.
I noticed some bars further up which had some good lookers and sit down at a bar with best looking girl I’ve seen so far, dancing in the bar. Actually it turns out they have two stunners dancing there. However that seems to be the only thing they are doing. Not getting much contact with them. So end up playing connect 4 with a girl who needs to have her teeth reorganized and the horizontal scars on her underarm isn’t appealing to me either. I finally win with the help of a 7 year old girl selling flowers and simple garlands. She speaks better English than most bar girls and win the dice game twice so I buy two garlands. Street smart kid, but it’s a bit sad to see small kids out at 11PM like this.
Anyway I move to the next bar, think it was Billabong; a lot of lively girls there and quite a few eager ones. I just let it flow and there is a one girl doing some dirty dancing with me. And mama is very eager and helpful to connect. No pressure for drinks. She feels the semi erected in my pants and gets a surprised look in her face, like can I handle this? So I was sitting with the girl of yesterday, and then noticed a small girl dancing in the bar. The girl noticed and called her over. I’m now with 2 girls and thinking about a 3some again. But I settle with the new girl, a very cute 23 year old, almost half my size. Rather limited English here as well. She’s also from Khorat which seems to be the case for most of the girls. So on the way back I sat down with her for a beer. She had a short and stylish hair cut that put her away from the other girls. And I think there was something with her eyes that fascinated me. And I like the heavy rock music from the 80’ies. Smart management who gets a decent band from the Philippines rather than using a local mediocre one who cannot sing English properly. To illustrate that there was quite a few people drinking in Shamrock, while the place further down the street with a local band was empty. I was especially impressed with the 5 ft tall guitar player doing a full split on the floor while playing. Damn I would like to BF her and her guitar.
Then it was a drunken woman the age of my mother, Rosemary from Sweden on her last night in Samui who wanted them to play “On a bed of roses”. But we have already played that song. A 1000B note and it was played again. She was having her time. So was I. And even more when I returned back to the room.
DAY6
We didn’t get out of the room before 2 PM after another 2 rounds in the morning. I was leaving the next day on a morning flight to U-Tapao, 2685B, and was thinking about having a night off. So I was very much in doubt what to do regarding the girl. However it solved itself since she had gotten an SMS from her sponsor who had returned back to Samui. I went for a work out at a local gym instead.
Later on I had an excellent burger at Bikini Beach just next door. Afterwards I played some pool and had a few beers at a bar and bought the girl with whom I played a drink; a pretty little 21 year old. Now I wished I have stayed longer, but abstained from BF her. It was hard though.

However, having read a couple of the sample pages, I would really advise you to attend a creative writing class, or similar. PS As someone who is thinking about a first visit to thailand possibly this winter Ko Samui sound my kind of place - I don't think I would the brashness and commercial aspects of BGK or Pattaya. Ks sounds a bit more laid back with better nature (and enough entertainment options)

Just some summary thoughs I made about Lamai
I would say that Lamai is a very good destination if you want to combine good beaches with mongering. I find it a bit easier and more laid-back than the scene in Chaweng. It seems like LT is the norm and you can get a good one for 1000B pluss BF. Accommodation is also cheaper her than in Chaweng. For those who want to party and drink there is no equivalent to Green Mango in Chaweng here in Lamai. It’s a typical beer bar scene and if you take your time and look around you might find a gem. What I could have done different is to take my time the first or second day and select someone with better language skills to have some day time company. But my own company isn’t too bad either. There are a lot of massage places which I strongly believe will offer extra services, but I didn’t try. Maybe an option for those on holiday with the wife.
You can of course bring with you a girl from Pattaya or elsewhere. Unless she is someone you really like to spend your time with I would say it’s not necessary. Also considering her transport cost will be more than 6000B, you can get a lot of Lamai based pussy for that money. I will defiantly go back there later, and maybe also check out what I can find in the bars at Thong Sala on Ko Pha Ngan, or I can bring one with me if I go diving on Ko Tao. Just beware of I was there in low season, so high season might be different. At least the hotel prices seems to almost double then.

Thanks for your input. In general you are right. But in Thailand there are certainly places that do not allow girls back into rooms, or charge extra. Thus I'm just trying to make sure with this place, as they want payment up front. Has anyone stayed at WILL WAIT apartments and know the answer?
Anybody used the Lamai Wanta lately? There have been plenty of good previous reports but looking at their website in the Rates section they have the following:
"Extra person using the existing bed is to be charged 200 Bht per person per night and it is inclusive of ABF"
This suggests a joiner fee. The previous reports have indicated girl friendly but was this GF with a fee?

Best to know now rather than getting told as you're ready to book in after a flight and feeling like shite, and having to go and find other digs.
Last 2 days of my trip were in Samui, staying at the southern end of Cheweng beach in a cheap guest house 'Akwa'. (passable with a good bed, A/C free videos/player, flatscreen tv and aroom safe, all for $17 per night). After the beach and food, I trotted off to look around a few of the beer bars and eventualy found a pretty puss (7.5) amongst the 3- 5s that were prevelent and just as well the scene was quiet or I may have found nothing worth taking back. Had a couple of drinks at the bar and then off to the room for some real live porn which indeed it was. Lots of DFK, 69'ers and porking in all positions, lasting half the night, quite amazing compared to other bar girls I've had. She then went home which was in fact located right behind the guesthouse, so be warned if you are going to stay there and play butterflys. Anyway next night I went to pick her up again and once we got back to the room the attitude was quite different, started telling me about her 4 year old girl back home and how she only porked for baby money etc, quite offputting but probably understandable, lets face it how many well heeled western girls sell their muffs for $50 or so a night, approximately none, I would say anyway I gave up on the sex especialy when the details of my 'other' life became the subject under the microscope, eventualy gave her few hundered bht and let her go for the night as Id completely lost interest, then went out for another drink, walking by her bar on the way back just to see but she hadnt gone back for another punt which is what I was half expecting.

Staying in Maenam by a friend as usual, we ventured out on the first evening and made the usual round of local bars. starting from Jordan Sports bar, not a real mongering place but girls might be ready for a take away, where a pool competition was in place. Food there is excellent and the atmosphere very familair (but not family type of bar even if mixed or western couples do call there).
Lemon Bar, usual bunch of girls, including the usual LB (lookng a bit less LB than before,but still clearly a LB), not taking much care of the customers, not even trying to get a drink.
Sabai-Sabai, on the far end of Maenam, where mama-san was not there and so the girls unattentive too.

On the way back, stopped at Sky bar in Bang rak and had fun and ladies playing around for an hour or so. wans't sure about "my" lady, fancing the cashier (called her chinese by the look and height, but she was from the border with Laos) but she was not ready (yet) to "marry" me. Pity for her, I could have bought her the buffalo she does not have at home!Hevw to say Sky bar gets some good points with the attitude of the girls
Last drink at My Bar back in Maenam, had a bite to eat, was feeling hungry, and after some 10 minutes appear the girl I experienced back in Spring. could not spend the last night alone and so, with no discussions - she was happpy to see me again - off we went.
Not a young girl (believe it or not, she is 50 but passes as 30 easily) but very passionate and hot. She was also more relaxed than the night we had together months ago.
Rates are still the usual: 300 for BF and 1000 for LT
I stay away from super stunners, as very seldom they deliver, but asks for high rates. So if one has to "miss", better do this with a lower priced girl!
Will take a few months before I go again on the rock, but I fear some bars will be closed by then.
There are simply not sufficient guys out in the evenings.
Is Samui starting to change in a calm (has never been R&R though) location?

Ark Bar, the bar, is a nice trendy bar on the beach. The kind of place frequented by western tourists and their girlfriends and/or western tourists trying to pick-up other western tourists, not the kind of people who go to Thailand for the local girls. I found it a little uncomfortable there on the only evening I went with two local girls so we didn't hang around long.

I agree, Bangkok Airways is the best source of information on air connections. If there is a direct one, it is going to be by them!
Thai Aiways is only doing the USM-BKK-USM route (USM = Koh Samui) twice a day, slots "gracefully" granted (= had to, by government decision!) by Bangkok Airways, owner of KS airport and so far working on esclusively basis (= monopole) there
I have just asked a friend in KS about ferrry and his reply is "not heard of, but have a flight from Uapau (Pattaya)".

I'm not often in Koh Samui, but I have several friends there (who stay mostly in the Lamai area). I've been there on several occasions, and yes, one can find a P4P girl even during low season. I was not overwhelmed by the quality available there (but I'm a picky guy) even if I've noticed a couple of real stunners at times during my stays.

I was there two weeks ago, Lamai for 5 nights, staying at Lamai Wanta. The hotel wasn't full but occupancy was high going by the problems getting a sunbed by the pool. This was the 3rd visit to Lamai and it did not seem any quieter than the previous visits.
Plenty of girls available in the bars and the massage places up the road opposite the Outback Bar all seem to be offering on-site servicing.
Mint is under new management with four girls working there, two very doable, two doable. I was offered FS onsite behind the curtains. This was a bit too public for me so we went to her room in a hotel literally 25m away. Had got BBBJ behind the curtains the previous day.
Nok Massage is further up the road, almost at the ring-road, next to the 7/11.
Regarding the weather, this visit it rained for about 5mins once in the five days, plenty of sunshine. Previous visits have been November and March. If I remember correctly it rained each day on those visits but only for about half an hour each day.

Koh Samui has its best weather and most natural beauty in the dry season which lags behind that of Phuket on opposite coast.
Where Phuket is nice already in December, the sea normally gets more beautiful in Koh Samui (i.e. crystal blue-greens instead of browns) in late January, thru Feb, to March. So that ought to be the peak season.
However global warming could well be stuffing up the seasons these days, I haven't checked really recently.
I would have thought the wet season starts much later than what Bionicman suggests.

Unless you are looking for something special in having company all day long... there are dozens if not hundreds of women available within walking distance of that hotel. Seems silly to bring coals to Newcastle and then look around and possible see something you would prefer but can't have because you're already committed.

After a few days exploring the massage parlor scene in BKK (see recent reports in the specific thread), I headed to Koh Samui for some beach and relaxing. I traveled with family, which limited my options to quick nighttime excursions to Lamai, the area closest to my hotel. No time to check out the bar scene, chat and have a few drinks before choosing a girl.
Even with these limitations, I can gladly report on some action. First, I have to say that I left Samui with the impression that Lamai is much more sex-oriented than Chaweng. Of what I could see in Chaweng, apart from the usual touristy nightlife of restaurants, bars, CD/DVD stalls and tailors, there were a few billiard joints tucked in some darker corners that seemed more amenable to our hobby. That, and some massage parlors on the northern part of town, with ladies in skimpy clothes idly chatting away as you pass by. I know, ladies at the bars are there for the taking, but again, it was a subtler environment.
Lamai, on the other hand, has a more on-your-face approach, with a large array of bars, restaurants and billiard joints clustered in the side streets around a square with a covered Thai boxing ring. In the bars immediately around the boxing ring, girls are plentiful, dancing in poles and inviting you for a drink. All pretty much in the open, which reminded me of the scene in Patong beach, in Phuket. There is a bordello on a corner of the square (a yellow building called simply “The Club”), for those who would prefer to have a drink and choose a girl with a little more privacy.
On my first night out in Lamai, I saw a massage parlor open (it was almost midnight) and decided to try my luck. I never bothered to ask what kind of massage was available. Just chose one girl, a cutie that looked 19 and was asleep when I walked in, said very clearly what I wanted and offered to pay BKK rates (1500 baht), which was appreciated. My heart starting pounding when she asked: “you want bumbum?” Had full service, including BBBJ, DFK and anal, in one of those massage beds in the room, separated from the other beds only by the running sheets hanging from the ceiling. I know, it is not much for privacy, but at that time of night, with no other costumers at the joint and all other ladies chatting outside, it was ok. Hurried, but enough to allow me to release and get back to my hotel with that priceless sense of accomplishment!
The next free night in Lamai, I drove around the area and picked up a WG that was standing in a corner. She asked 1000 baht for ST. Since we could not go back to my hotel, she directed me to a short-time hotel in town (500 baht for the room, plus a 500 baht deposit to make sure you return the key). It was dreadful. She could not stop asking silly questions (who wants to give away personal details to a WG?) and had little experience. When I asked for BBBJ, she started to make strange noises, as if just about to puke all over my dick, so I quit. Left the room without paying her a dime (and she did not even complain, as if agreeing with my displeasure), got my deposit back and headed to the hotel without scoring. A miss, but it was just my luck. Lamai is full of potential.
So, unless I totally missed the action in Chaweng (which is quite possible, given my time and freedom constraints), I would say that Lamai would be a better destination for those visiting Koh Samui mainly for the hobby.

After a few days exploring the massage parlor scene in BKK (see recent reports in the specific thread), I headed to Koh Samui for some beach and relaxing. I traveled with family, which limited my options to quick nighttime excursions to Lamai, the area closest to my hotel. No time to check out the bar scene, chat and have a few drinks before choosing a girl. ....
So, unless I totally missed the action in Chaweng (which is quite possible, given my time and freedom constraints), I would say that Lamai would be a better destination for those visiting Koh Samui mainly for the hobby.

I never experienced Lamai, as I stay elsewhere but Chaweng, usually visited once or twice during my stays does offer a couple of dark areas or sin streets with bars and girls on offer very similar to what you depicted in Lamai's boxing ring.
Sorry for the bad experience with the WG... Maybe KS is not yet at the pace of BKK freelances.

What a wonderfull trip that I had in Koh Samui & Koh Phangan for my new year countdown. So here is my field report.
Day 1 I reach Koh Samui's town near the pier (NAthon Town) to check in our hotel in this town. Report (also on BKK) will follow. Promised.I would say so, even in the busiest parts opf the bar area in Chaweng, there will be of course of girls trying to pull you in the bars, but it is easy to avoid the hassle.
it is definetely a more relaxed atmosphere, I'd say.
And if you venture in smaller urbanizations, the vasrious bars will have sufficient WG to chose from and definetely more quiet in their approach.

My first time in Samui was in 1992 (back before the airport was built, before the idea of having McDonalds, etc., here was imaginable). I have probably been here 10 times since, often as a brief detour from BKK's airport. Bangkok Airways is and has always been great, so getting here is super-convenient. Anyway, I'm here now and thought that I'd offer a few observations.
1. Despite the ugliness and putrid sewage stink of the comercial street behind the beach, there is something magical about the beach itself at Chaweng. I have been to the best beaches in the world (e. G. All over northeastern Brazil), and to my mind, this is up there with the best. Why? The color of the water, the cool breaze, the easy-going vibe of the restaurants at the hotels/bungalows, where you can sit back, eat thai food, and stare at the water all day long. It's been somewhat marred by construction over the years, but all in all the vibe is still there.
2. The bar-girl completely p4p scene here is pretty dire. Plenty of it, but the girls are 3rd rate, and the scene just doesn't feel right here. What can be a decent p4p scene though is what comes out late at night, usually after the green mango closes and the crowd moves to one of a couple of places that the after hours party might B. Just follow the crowd. But, see below:
3. There is a charming semi-pro/ non-pro scene here that is available to anybody who is half-way (maybe one third-way!) attractive. Basically, all the little shops are staffed by girls who (1) are intrigued by foreigners and (2) like to party like anybody else. I have had many such encounters over the years. So, by no means are all of the girls at the green mango or after hours places hookers, at least in the traditional sense (one could argue that in the non-traditional sense, we are all hookers, but that's another story). They're easy to spot because, well, they're the ones who don't dress like hookers, and they'll ignore you if you treat them as such. If you have any doubt, you can confirm when you visit them at their day job. Usually I end up buying them something or giving them some cash at the end of my trip, which has never been refused, but nothing has ever been asked for either.
One complication of getting involved with this scene is that you feel like a total s***-head if you hook up with some bar girl the following night.
So there are my 3 cents on Samui, 2010.
P.S. The window of excellent weather here is relatively brief. It tends to be rainy sometimes through Christmas, and then starts getting too hot for my liking around mid-March.

Checked out the scene around the green mango at midnight on saturday night.
Most of the bars had about 3-4 average looking girls total working in them. No customers.
One of them seemed to have about 15, don't remember the name. A couple lookers maybe.
The green mango had 5-10 total thai girls. About 25 tourists. So 30ish total people at midnight on a saturday night in the high season. I took one walk around and left.
Saw about 2 stunners during my walk up and down Chaweng and the mango area.
Basically it seemed like you could find a decent girl if you really needed to get off, but other than that it's a waste of energy.

I would agree with Phred Phish about the beach at Chaweng - it is genuinely amongst the world's greatest beaches. As for the full-on P4P scene, I have found Lamai's to be noticeably better than that of Chaweng. Too bad the beach itself is not nearly as fine.

Last time I was on Samui I stayed in Lamai, best for mongering in my opinion, I inquired with Easy Divers' office there. I didn't do any dives though, but have spent a week with them on Ko Tao and was happy with their services then. Really cheap diving you won't find from Samui since most of the diving is done off Ko Tao and requires a long boat ride. But I can recommend Sail Rock close to Ko Phagan, 2 dives for 4000B incl equipment it was. It really doesn't matter if you stay close to their office in Chaweng or Lamai, since the boats depart from another place on the island and you will be picked up at your hotel. But be prepared for an early rise.

Have only stayed at Lami Inn 99 so I can't compare. But it's still cheaper than Lamai Wanta though. But Lamai Inn will satisfy your needs for location and GF. Girls need to leave their ID to the night guard and can be picked up in the reception in the morning.

I just stayed at the Lamai Wanta for three nights. If you enjoy the beer bar scene then you will a great time. I personally like go-gos and massage parlors so I call it a good time not great. I rented a scooter and recommend it. You and I will be the only geeks wearing a helmut. The massage parlors tend to get booked around 4:00 PM and the selection is poor. I recommend going early in the day or at night. You are going to have to very lucky to see Nok. I was at her place and two guys came looking for her and she was busy with the third. Guys tend to purchase multiple hours with her at least on that day. If you go to Thailand often I would say Samui is worth a side trip. I would not go just for the ladies.
I went diving in Samui eight years ago and the visibility was poor. I did not try it this time.

Stayed at Hathai House a few weeks ago for 5 nights, for 1000b the poolside rooms are good value, the pool is quite small but fine to just cool off and although only 4 sunbeds there always seemed to be one free.Family that run hotel are very pleasant, hotel is also GF as no staff at hotel past 7pm. Hotel is situated ok for girlie bars but is a 10 minute walk to beach.

First post ever. Just an intro. I've been reading this forum since perhaps 1994. Jackson, you're doing an outstanding job. That said, I have read over everything posted in the Samui forum (it was about 460 pages in M$ Word), and highly recommend others do the same before posting ridiculous repetitious questions. There is much to add to what has already been posted.
I, proud, king cheap-charlie absolutely encourage others to follow in my cheap-charlieness. KS has been skyrocketing in costs, and it due to ding-dong farangs (as many of those reading this) who stupidly pay $50- $100/night for a hotel room and consider it a good deal.
Personally I've been going to Lamai since 1999. Since then, IMO, Lamai has turned sad. Back then, way less people. Way more fun. Less morons buying the usual touristy crap. Way way less crap to buy, No McDonald's which has taken over the nice rustic Lamai landscape. And, most thankfully then, none of those DAMN tailor-pimps. Shops were small and owned by little people. Last decade place has completely changed: Now lots of large chains as 7-11, Subway sandwich, McDs, etc and the usual corporate crap.
Back then, I thought Lamai really special. No longer.
Just spent about a month in KS. Few pragmatic thoughts on Lamai:
Hotels: Paid 500 baht for my hotel. Could have paid less. Last year I did pay at that same hotel 450 baht. I told owner this, and she could care less. Fine. After 13 days I left for Chewang. To be clear, the hotel I was at had AC, cable-TV, fridge, large bed, hot water, and was quiet and clean. People overall were friendly and honest. Was a nice place. Point is that yes cheap places do exist. Where was it? Answer: Use shoe leather.
How to get the best price? Go to some Hotel. "What is your rate? " "What if I stay for 4 days? " "What if I pay for a week and pay in advance? " etc. Bargain and bargain hard. If you do not like their rate, then move on to somewhere else!
Do not pay more than 1000 baht a night. There is no reason to. Overpaying encourages all other hotels to raise their prices to stupid farang prices, which I am seeing a lot of.
Girls: Freelancers I like the most. Fusion Club is where bar beer gals hang out after 2: AM. They either FL or go home with not a baht. Personally I am sleeping by 2: AM, and there is no one at Fusion at even 1:30am. That said, if you do stay up that late, gals not hard to find. Yes you can find FLs, earlier than midnight, but not as easy compared to past. I always pay FLs 500 for ST and 1000 LT. No reason to pay more. FLs do take that price. Never a problem.
Yes, countless bar beers. They are located at the 1. Thai boxing place, 2. Near McDonalds, and a few other places which are quick walking distance and easy enough to find (just follow the noise and neon). Personally sick of um. Bar beer gals have nothing at all to say, and I am sick of connect-4 and the other stupid BG games. Worse is the buying expensive drinks for the "honor" of paying a bar fine, and then overpaying for ST / LT. Crazy setup, eh.
Got a motorbike to ride around the island for 100 baht daily. Bike was about 4 years old and had 30, 000 kilometers. Worked fine. There is no reason to pay more than that. Where do you find it? Answer again: Shoe leather! Plenty of places have them for that price. Why pay 200 plus baht nightly? None.
Just a few tidbits on Lamai worth mentioning:
* Laundry is 30 baht a kilo, which is as far as I know the cheapest in all Thailand.
* Lamai tailor-pimps are probably the pushiest on the island. Specially that slimeball near Best Resort, and a few across from the Thai boxing ring. There must be over 20 in Lamai alone now. Like WTF!
* Internet connect is 30 baht on the the main road, north wing of Lamai. It is I believe the cheapest on the Island.
* For a cheap snack at night, guy near the boxing sells a fried egg for only 10 baht. Great midnight snack. However, tell them to fry it for only a few seconds. Do not let him overfry it, or you'll be eating grease.
* Avoid those Thai "pancake" stalls. All of them. I saw this "cook" (or whatever you call the guy who makes those things) had the pancake chocolate and caramel all over his hands and everywhere else. You do not want to know, and he was just licking it off his fingers, while putting much of it back in the bottle, ready to serve farangs. And there were the ding-dong mostly obese farangs on line a few feet away waiting to eat their "saliva pancake", completely oblivious to it all. You farangs really got to be more aware of your surroundings.
* Do watch the Thai boxing. It is once a week. Many are really good. Also you can grab a female Thai boxer after wards for the evening. I've had more than a few (yea, you have to pay BF, but she's worth it).
* Anyone remember The Rising Sun? If so, can anyone answer where the Hash Bar is now?

100 bahts/day for motorbike rental is easily obtained when OK with a Honda Wave and renting for at least 5 days. Some guys need a Fino or an Airblade to match their hansumness though.

Oh come on, you're being a bit harsh on him, he is not exactly insulting people and his post makes for a different read. Besides, info given on rates/prices are very accurate.
That said, my last stay in Samui (July 2009) lasted only 5 days and I was bored to death after only 3 days. Either I have changed a lot or the place has, maybe both.

Never said that is wasn't good information, and I don't think I was "overstating" the "tone" of the post. Just an observation, IMHO it was an "interesting" way to start out as a first time poster. Not sure what a "ding dong farang" is but pretty sure it is not a term of endearment, and well I guess I have done a few "stupid" things in my life, so I guess I qualify on both counts........

Never said that is wasn't good information, and I don't think I was "overstating" the "tone" of the post. Just an observation, IMHO it was an "interesting" way to start out as a first time poster. Not sure what a "ding dong farang" is but pretty sure it is not a term of endearment, and well I guess I have done a few "stupid" things in my life, so I guess I qualify on both counts........

Well it's the old debate opposing cheap charlies and big spenders. Not sure whether it makes sense or not. I guess there are exaggerated behaviours in both camps.
As an expat I tend to have an affinity with the cheapos camp but if someone likes to spend 5K in accommodation, it's up to them. As long as they genuinely favour posh places and not just to "impress the girls". Otherwise I think it is both stupid (girls don't give a fukc about posh places, even 500 bahts places are much better than their own place) and indecent (paying 5K for a room and 1-2K for the shag is shocking indeed).

that said, my last stay in samui (july 2009) lasted only 5 days and i was bored to death after only 3 days. either i have changed a lot or the place has, maybe both.

I'm just wrapping up a most enjoyable first visit to Koh Samui. This three night adventure was successful in part because of some ground work I layed with a DIA lady. Rather than take someone with me to the island, I found a few nice local prospects on DIA that were already here. I lucked out in choosing the best of the bunch to connect with when I first arrived. I didn't know if my lady was in it for money or romance, but that just fueled the "chase" and intreague aspect of the meeting.
She agreed to moto out to the Lamai Wanta to meet me right after I arrived and I knew that was a good sign. We hit it off, had dinner that first night, and ended up with an overnight stay.
The next morning we rented a bike larger than hers to double, and she took me around the island...her driving...showing me every thing. Frankly, I'm not keen on biking at my age, but she was a good and cautious driver. I think the moto gives you great freedom to really experience a location. The island has a great look and feel with small mountains of cocconut palms and good vistas. Great change of pace for me after coming from Udon Thani and Chiang Mai. She was a great tour guide. We also stopped at several places to meet with her friends and socialise, see where she lives, and meet up with a small group of friends in the late evening to dance with in Chewang. Partying with three Thai ladies and their two boyfriends (in thier 50's from Spain) was a treat.
We did the second overnight, but I was beginning to tire of her company..so bid her adieu in the morning. By the way, these Thai ladies like their sleep! She passed on the great buffet breakfast at the Lamai Wanta both days. I left her in the room, with my valuables descretely secured in the safe, while I ate. I knew after the first night that she needed funds, so it was no surprise when she made a subtle request. I gave her 1500 bhat for the two overnights...roughly 36 hours..and of course took care of food and incidentals along the way. She was very happy and wrote me an appreciative note later.
Couple of items: She splits monthly rent in Chewang Beach area of 3000 bhat with 2 other girls. They also have about 400 in utilities each. Pretty tiny barely furnished place. See the pic.
The Lamai Wanta is great! Three story modules cover a larger piece of property than I had anticipated. Really attractive restaurant and pool on the beach. Plentiful well regulated supply of hot water, good safe, refer, free relyable inroom wi-fi internet. Highly recommend. Plus a great location within a couple of blocks of the lady bar scene and Club Fusion. The beach scene here is beautiful with several really interesting beach bars immediately adjacent to the LW. These are not lady bars however, and are best enjoyed with a girlfriend in tow. Cushioned lounge platforms on the beach are lit with candles and there's a definite romantic feel to the scene. You can cosy up to your lady and make out while enjoying the cocktails that your waiter brings or looking at the stars. Not a singles scene for sure. The LW clientel is primarily European couples from young to old with a few small children/familys thrown in. At no time did I see a single male/Thai lady together on the property. Nevertheless, felt quite comfortable to bring her home due to the layout of the property.
Airport taxi seems regulated and cost 700 bhat to the hotel. I got lucky and shared a ride with a young Aussie couple. Return trip is 500 bhat.
After my first DIA lady left, I went down to Chewang Beach to meet a DIA prospect for my last night. That endeavor was a waste of time and I ended up walking a good portion of the beach solo and taking pictures. Came back to the LW, had a nice massage, and hit the sack alone for an early flight to Pattaya. A few beach shots attached.
In summary,the bar girls here don't look that great and aren't available as all day companions. Bring your own girl unless you only want a piece. If you want to see the island, rent a car or moto. Nicer to see and enjoy with company along who knows the lay of the land.
I have some DIA prospects lined up for my next stop, Pattaya, and can always fall back on the cheap and plentiful supply of local pros. However, I know from experience that Pattaya lacks daytime activities which are essential for me. Plus, I like working on the connection rather than just hitting the massage parlors. Age is catching up here.

Getting a 3 day GFE with hot sex is going to require a lot of luck. After one day, the sincerity of the GFE may begin to lag. Personally, I think you've set some unrealistic expectations. You'll have better luck finding 3 one night stands and Pattaya is a better place for that...as Mart Cham mentioned. I'm in Pattaya now and just came from Koh Samui. GFE in Pattaya is extremely easy to find, actually I find it to be the norm. In Koh Samui not difficult either but if one is very picky as regards to looks, they'd better try their luck in Patts, much more available women.
I stumbled across a store specializing in replica watches and other items in Chaweng Beach. The quality and diversity of brands was quite amazing. I've looked at replica watches occasionally in China, Kaula Lumpur, and other places and don't recall seeing as nice a selection. So I just want to give credit to this store "Mr. Smith". I had hoped to find a sister store in Bangkok, but nothing shows up on the internet. Mr Smith is across from Starbucks and Coyote Bar and adjacent to Murphy's Pub on the main street in Chaweng. I didn't buy, but probably would have if I could have visited it again. I have no affiliation with them. Just a heads up to those of you who might be interested. Really quite a unique place.

I will continue some of my thoughts on Koh Samui. For me, this is a kind of brain dump, and now writing this on the fly. First part of report was on Lamai. This is on Naton.
Naton is the capital of Samui. Actually it's a pretty neat area. If you must purchase touristy crap, Naton is the best place to get it. I myself got some stupid Croc knockoff shoes there for 300 baht. Recommend you not buy that touristy crap at Chewang or Lamai. Just ding-dong farang overpriced. Believe that prices are the cheapest in Naton, so absolutely worth a visit.
If you're like me, and like riding the 100 baht daily Honda motorbike around the island, you MUST wear your helmet in Naton. If you do not, and cops see you, you WILL a ticket and fine. On the rest of the island it does not matter if you wear a helmet, but in Naton it does. You've been warned.
There is a hospital in Naton. It was two years ago called the Naton hospital, but I believe name recently changed to the Koh Samui hospital. It is the absolute cheapest hospital on the island. I recommend it for a few things. Example, if you need something standard, basic, which they cannot screw up, go there. Cheap. Example. I had two X-Rays done on my back last year. Cost was either 300 or 400 baht for both. Yes, it that cheap (back in the States, could not imagine how much X-rays cost). Of course, I kept the X-Ray and take it w/ me when I see my back doctor. If you need a standardized test done, and want dirt cheap prices, go there. If you need a prescription, go there. Met many farang locals who swear by the place. Would not advise having open heart surgery there however.
On the hospital note, there are other hospitals on the Island. I consider them all good for different purposes. The most expensive hospital on the island is the Samui / BKK hospital. Avoid it unless you want to pay ding-dong farang prices. That hospital advertises throughout the entire island, and yes is absolutely the one to avoid. When I visited there few years ago to get some tests done, they wanted like thousands of baht just to get a darn hospital card, and then would charge me obscene higher prices than anywhere else if were ding-dong enough to actually use that card. All the taxi drivers will take you to that hospital if you're in an accident or for any other reason. This is because the samui / BKK hospital pays the taxi driver a large commission for sick farang delivery. The other Samui hospitals include Samui International, Bandon,. And two or three others. Each have their own specialty. I've heard excellent reports on all of them.
OK, Naton onward.
Naton has reasonable quality food, and is a neat place to visit every once in a while. If you land in Samui via ferry (as I did) you then can take one of those baht buses to either Chewang or Lamia for about 50 baht. Do not take a taxi! Taxis all have this funny sign on top which reads "Meter Taxi". Well, there is absolutely NO taxi at all on the island which uses a "meter". And all taxi prices are at ding-dong farang levels of 300. 400 baht.
It was posted on this forum that near the Paradise Hotel there a 'house of I'll repute'. Of course, for research purposes only, I went there. You MUST go there after 6M. Otherwise you can walk past and not even notice it. Went there, saw the gals, and let me tell you, they were anything but spring chickens. More than a bit past their prime. However, the upstairs rooms were nicer than expected. She wanted 500 baht. In advance. Which I thought funny. She spoke little English, which perhaps explains why advance payment. Fine. Gal was strong enough and I came and went fast enough. Overall, a good romp and worth the 500 baht, and would return.
Not mentioned (until now that is) that just south of the Paradise Hotel is another hotel called either Junta or Jinta. Something like that. Walk South to hotel. Turn Left. Few massage parlors on Right. One place gave a massage, lay, and after wards good wank in 60 minutes for 1200 baht. The other gave me a massage and pretty poor BJ for 1000 baht. The first was better. Rooms small, very basic. There were figure 4-5 MPs in that area. Also, from there, if you walk past those MPs, to the center street and turn left again, walk few minutes north there another MP. Did not go to that one. Gals looked 40-50 years plus.
That is all I can think of Naton. Corrections / additions / subtractions / comments are all welcome.
Will write on getting to Samui and Chewang next time.

Thanks for the update regardin Koh Samui. I was 12 times at the island, last time 2, 5 years ago. I loved Chaweng and can advise anyone who loves the "old Samui" to take a short ride by boat to Koh Phangang. There is a small bar scene and a laid back carribean atmosphere. Hope I can return by the end of 2009 as planned.

Don't necessarily need a scene that is as active as Lamai indeed looking for a quieter beach location on the island that has a smaller bar scene or one that can be easily commuted to and from of an evening.
Are there some nice beach locations that are out of the main stream i.e not Chewang/Lamai that anyone can recommend? Ideally somewhere the local songthaew or taxi will be easy to get should there be a need to get to the Chewang/Lamai?
Might be that the quieter location is where some take in is taken to rather than a selection every night.
What about Bangrak, Bophut Beach, Maenam Beach etc etc?? Is there a bar scene there?

#2041 is right. Maenam is not too bad in itself, cheap and quiet but without renting a motorbike (which you should do anyway IMHO), your independance would be seriously limited.

I always go to Maenam (was ther 2 weeks ago) and there is a sufficient bra scene
But I agree, you need a mean of transport. Motorbike will do (jut be careful, high rate of accidents on motorbikes)

Some night a bar has good selection, the night after it is "dead" or closes early

Yes I have been to Maenam once but that was to do a cooking class but was during the day. Unfortunately I lost a brother to a motorcycle accident a few years ago and vowed never to get on one so it is some what a self imposed exile.
The Lamai scene has it all from a mongering perspective however it can become a very small town if you stay there a week or so. Especially if you play the field and butterfly as I do. So new an fresh ground is good.
I have experience the taxi mafia who won't switch their meters on so I know the issues of traveling of a night, think renting a car might be the go.
Bionicman I look forward to seeing your report on Lamai and Krabi.....I have looked at Krabi as a possible destination.

Recently finished some 10 days on the rock.
Plane was full but the new resorts are surely absorbing most of them (families) as bars do not seem much busy. Different story on restaurants (far too many, still so I am wodnering how all can make a living)
My base is always Maenam: sufficient amount of bars (appr 26) from where to pick up girls, sufficiently off the main routes to be more quiet and less 'tourist'.
Maenam lives a lot of repeat visitors and it is not unusual to re-meet previous acquaintances (in terms of visitors and girls)
The so called 'dark side', past the main area direction south, offers Sabai-Sabai, always equipped with half a dozen girls. Geko (2 bored girls) and Yo-Yo seemed living a 2nd life, thanks to some new arrivals from...(guess?) Isan.
Sabai-sabai caters mongers and groups in their clientele, with some foreign girls not surprised of seeing men in their 40's and 50' with local nieces :)
Did not do any pick from there this time: nothing appealing

Had an excursion one night in Chaweng but it did not seem busy.
Went to see Lamai (I feel it will soon take over the tourists from Chaweng) and visited the two bar areas.
definetely some talents around to be picked up, even if none of the areas offers the opportunity to some "pre-check" on girls,a nd most of them are definetely on the straight business direction: either you drink or you take them for a ST:)
Ventured to the mainland, in Krabi area for a planned 2 nights 3 day stay, but came back after 24hrs.
The night scene is concentrated in one main area, Center Point, where a dozen of bars pump music loud to prevail on the other. As a result, lot of noise. Stopped in one bar: had a drink, costing more than Maenam and the girls very average.
Moved to another bar after a round of them and again, after a drink me and my wingman deecided to leave. No bar girls were bothering to approach, jsut concerned to continue their own chit-chat. The most pro-active was a decent (and not wild) ladyboy at the bar next door: go figure! No wonder why sometime men escape from women. LOL.
So wrote Krabi off as a no-go, in addition to the difficulties to park, far too many tourist restaurant and shops.
More expensive than Samui.

I agree, but we also know how some of them get boring and difficult when they think they own you (or, better, own your wallet)
So it is not the we sticked them into our head and feel guilty of butterflying, rather than them, especially in low periods, sticking you and your wallet in their mind, for a repeat (business)

I'm a not very active member of the board but do like to try to report if I have anything useful to add. Last post was a couple of years ago on Bali.
Anyway guys, having a significant other here with me, evening action is out of the question. Are any of the bars mentioned (Sabai Sabai, YoYo, Chill Out etc) likely to have any mid to late afternoon girls in attendance? Are there any recognised parlours as in Bali?
Any feedback gratefully received and rest assured this intrepid reporter will report back.

Recently finished some 10 days on the rock.
Plane was full but the new resorts are surely absorbing most of them (families) as bars do not seem much busy. Different story on restaurants (far too many, still so I am wodnering how all can make a living)
My base is always Maenam: sufficient amount of bars (appr 26) from where to pick up girls, sufficiently off the main routes to be more quiet and less 'tourist'.
Maenam lives a lot of repeat visitors and it is not unusual to re-meet previous acquaintances (in terms of visitors and girls)
The so called 'dark side', past the main area direction south, offers Sabai-Sabai, always equipped with half a dozen girls. Geko (2 bored girls) and Yo-Yo seemed living a 2nd life, thanks to some new arrivals from...(guess?) Isan.
Sabai-sabai caters mongers and groups in their clientele, with some foreign girls not surprised of seeing men in their 40's and 50' with local nieces :)
Did not do any pick from there this time: nothing appealing

Mama-san, with quite some spring-times behind, has stocked the bar with 4-5 girls. 7-8's, apart one lady that could have been a mama-san school mate, by the age:)

Ventured to the mainland, in Krabi area for a planned 2 nights 3 day stay, but came back after 24hrs.
The night scene is concentrated in one main area, Center Point, where a dozen of bars pump music loud to prevail on the other. As a result, lot of noise. Stopped in one bar: had a drink, costing more than Maenam and the girls very average.
Moved to another bar after a round of them and again, after a drink me and my wingman deecided to leave. No bar girls were bothering to approach, jsut concerned to continue their own chit-chat. The most pro-active was a decent (and not wild) ladyboy at the bar next door: go figure! No wonder why sometime men escape from women. LOL.
So wrote Krabi off as a no-go, in addition to the difficulties to park, far too many tourist restaurant and shops.
More expensive than Samui.
Not my scene.

Sabai sabai is a bar
Maenam is definetely quieter than Lamai
But has sufficient WG to pick up fromOn the other hand when yoiu go to the square in lamai with the boxing ring and the thens of kiosk, you are mainly ther to be hooked for drinks
In Maenam it is all less obvious. You drink, you have your fun, you can test a bit the girls
In Bangrak, one can try Papa Joe, some 8-10 girls around.
Maenam is not the place for quantity
Ok, finally of bit of time to update my piece / thoughts on Koh Samui.
For those going to Samui, you can go by plane, train, or bus. Going to Samui I generally take the train. On the ISG, travel via train has I believe never been written on. I, cheap Charlie, will avoid the farang-priced airplane. Recall reading somewhere that the flight to Samui from BKK is among the most expensive flight per mile in the world. Bangkok Air has the monopoly, tho now recently Thai airways also goes there but this has made little difference price-wise. It still ridiculously high. If you have the slightest sense of adventure and want to save some cash, the best way to go Samui is via train. Go to the main train station, and with the new underground railroad. The underground rr is quick, direct, and really modern. There is an underground entrance train station not far from Cowboy. Once in, just ask how to get the main train station. Amazingly fast. Unlike past, you did not need rely on taxi drivers. And the usual traffic / pollution to get there. Purchase your Samui ticket ONLY at the main station. Never at a travel agency. If you do, you will overpay and not get the best seat possible. Get a 2nd class sleeper car ticket, and the bottom bunk is better. Paid as I recall 1050 baht or thereabouts. Last time I took the top bunk, and nearly froze up there. Bottom bunk is better.
At the main train station has small sandwiches and similar. Get them. You can also leave your luggage there for a cheap price for as long as needed. From memory, and could be off slightly, train left about 7M. There is a pitfall, and I fell for it. Soon after the train moves, the "conductor" gives you a menu written in Thai and it says something and 150 BAHT in large letters on top. Asked the guy and he said cost for the meal is 150 baht. However, this was a scam and naturally afterwards told me the real price of 150 baht for EACH meal (if you could call that crap in any way a meal) and 50 baht to "deliver" it. 50 baht, please. That food was pure Thai garbage – eg: the "fresh orange juice" was really orange colored sugar water, the "hot coffee" was cold and putrid, and the rest was inedible. Pissed me off big time, since I take the train to SAVE money, 350 baht is 7/1oth my daily hotel bill, and was the only scam I fell for the entire trip. There was a woman who also offered food on the train for like 50 baht, which did not look bad. Oh well, will do next time.
The train is always full w/European backpackers. And I do mean it is packed with people every time I go. The place you sit, the seats convert to a sleeper car, and there a curtain for privacy to relax and sleep. Personally I grab my ipod and listen to my audio books / podcasts for most the trip. Whole thing a bit of an adventure. Train stops and starts who knows where along the way. Wake up about 4:30 AM at town called sura-tani. From there about a 2 hour bus ride and then a boat ride. Arrival in Samui is about 10: AM. Of course, people ask you what hotel you are staying at. Tell them nothing. They are trying to sell you their overpriced hotels for commiss. Personally I know the island well enough to know where my 500 baht hotels are located and always stay there. I have always found something available for cheap. Once the boat lands in Naton, take a baht bus for about 60 baht to Lamia / Chewang / wherever.
As I recall, the airlines are 4000 baht. Plus you have to pay few hundred for taxi to get to the airport, and then of course deal with the taxi mafia once in Samui which further steals your cash. Whole thing a scam. I always take the train down. Also saves a night hotel bill.
When going back from Samui to BKK have taken the bus (once), train, and airplane. Do not take the bus. Ever. Thais love their noise, and when I went they had this damn TV blasting LOUD for about 1/2 the ride. The Thai humor itself was only slightly less painful since I do not understand the language. I was with 40-plus year old Thai lady who wanted to give me a BBBJ right in my seat. Ummmm thanks but no thanks. If I were in a hotel w/ hot running water then perhaps, but for the time decided to pass. Only reason to take the plane back is if you can directly connect to your flight out of the country.compared to the train, it saves a huge amount of time, and after a 14 plus hour ride, by the time you get to BKK, rent a ST hotel to shower, clean up, and get taxi back to airport, not worth it IMO. Best to just grab a connecting flight and then leave the country.
OK. Next posting will get to the main topic at hand and write of Chewang Beach, the gals there, and related topics. Much to report on. Perhaps these will kickstart this forum bit.

Did you stay in Krabi itself, or venture to Ao Nang Beach town. I stayed in Ao nang and had a great time for a couple of days. The bar girl areas are well hidden and hard to find though. Once you find them, they can be a lot of fun. Mostly 7s and 8s. no stunners. We stayed on a bungalow in the "jungle" for 500 baht. We rented motosais and toured around and went scuba diving. Really enjoyed it.

if you must make a reservation online, would make it only for a day or two, and then when there get a better place for a cheaper price. best way is via shoe leather. trust me. method may be dated, but if not broke, don't fix it.

I always stay at the Serene Hill Resort at Lamai. Its on the main ring road, very handy for the "naughty" MPs at the top of the road leading into the bar area. They have good deals if you keep on eye on their website.
I suggested a couple I knew, even if I reside by friends when I am there.
Where I stay I pay 700 with AC, large bed, hot water, cable, fridge, dvd, solid house (no bungalow) 50mtr from the beach.Am guessing Coconut.
Used to stay there.

Firstly thanks for all the replies.
Yes I have been to Maenam once but that was to do a cooking class but was during the day. Unfortunately I lost a brother to a motorcycle accident a few years ago and vowed never to get on one so it is some what a self imposed exile.
The Lamai scene has it all from a mongering perspective however it can become a very small town if you stay there a week or so. Especially if you play the field and butterfly as I do. So new an fresh ground is good.
I have experience the taxi mafia who won't switch their meters on so I know the issues of traveling of a night, think renting a car might be the go.
Bionicman I look forward to seeing your report on Lamai and Krabi.....I have looked at Krabi as a possible destination.

OK have selected Maenam as the destination this year in June. Now looking for the some good beach accomodation. Can anyone recommend a nice beach hotel or resort in Maenam? Happy to pay 2000 -3000baht if it is the right one. Appreciate any recommendations.

(Maybe they will refuse to take you that long way. Because some drunken tourists will pay them 1000 for a 500 m ride inside Chaweng.)
Is there a Song Toew service between Maenam and Lamai? What time do the Song Toew stop running?I think you have to change Song Thaew In Chaweng. As I know there is no direct connection. And very hard to get one at night (later 11pm)

I'm in Lamai right now, arrived from Pattaya 5 days ago. And I'm glad I did so. Here business is as usual. Do not notice anything about what goes on other places in the country. Calm and quiet it is with not too many tourists. Still plenty of girls in the bars.

the walking distance depends on where you stay in Maenam.
There are a few bars at the south end (Sabai-sabai, geko, yo-yo) and more bars at the north end. A bit less (for mongering) in the middle.
Some sort of transportation is a better choice if you do not stay nearby those areas.

This site is absolutely invaluable. Am headed to Cebu this summer and read / outlined the Cebu thread over 2000 pages. Did the same back in 2005 when I went there back then. Of course before I went to Samui I also outlined this thread.
Back February went to KS for a few weeks. To see my other reports, just view this thread a bit ago where I wrote of Lamai, Naton, and advice on getting to Samui.
After a bit in Lamai, decided to leave. Few reasons for this. The hotel I stayed at raised my rates. When I stayed there last year they charged 450 baht (clean and had cable, AC, hot water, and nice large bed). They raised price to 500 baht.
So. Is 50 baht a big deal?
While reading these threads I can never understand how people appear cheap when it comes to paying bar girls, and yet readily compare hotel prices of this third world country to New York, LA, Paris, Tokyo, etc. There is only one reason hotel prices have skyrocketed: Ding Dong farangs.
Example. Back 2003 I stayed at the Ark Bar (Hotel) in Chewang. Cost was 650 baht. Then I did not have my self-imposed rule of never paying more than 500 baht for a clean hotel throughout Thailand (BKK excluded). It was a nice place, and recall that the buffet breakfast was exceptional. Went back two years later in 2005. Cost 1500 baht. Said to gal "I stayed here two years ago for only 650 baht. " Reply: "OK. For you special price: 1200 baht. " Was like "Ummmmm. You're not listening are you? " Went to Ark Bar this year. Believe it was about 2200 baht. Thing is it was completely the same room. Same beds. Same small crappy TV. Same flooring. Was like I stepped back in time to 2003. Only difference was an increase in price of four times. And inflation is not that high.
Here's the point: You're welcome. I have this self-imposed 500 baht hotel limit, and I really try to keep prices of hotels, and ladies DOWN for everyone. It my hope that others do follow.
Moving on. So, got tired of Lamai, and the hotel price increase of 50 baht day was to me a sign to leave. That, lack of freelancers, and a want to move on. Many reported on this forum that Chewang is more expensive than Lamai. Well, I think it could be, but not for me. I drove there w/ my 100 baht daily motorbike and used the best way to find another hotel: shoe leather. Within a very short time found a few places for 500 baht on the strip, and many hotels for under 1000 baht.
Since I had read this entire forum on KS and outlined important facts, I will correct / update previous inaccuracies. People posted that you can get freelancers around the Burger King and 7/11 steps. This was correct in past; and I have picked up many girls there. However, now this no longer the case, at least when I was there. On those fabled BK steps were only a few scumbag beggars. Nothing else, not even after 1: AM. People wrote freelancers at the Moonbar and Sweet Soul Cafe. If memory serves, it was Moonbar which I could not find anywhere. Where is it anyway? Sweet Soul Cafe was a small place, across Green Mango. It was packed with people with loud loud LOUD noise. I could not imagine getting anyone from there. I mean you have to be able to at min talk the the gal. I called it a bust.
Went to the Green Mango Area many times. Had little luck there (I always pick up FLs in BKK and Pattaya, so am experienced). The Green Mango itself had loud music, and I had a bad vibe of the place. Around that circle leading to Mango were numerous bar beers. However, I really do not see the point of bar beers. Walked around the circle looking for FLs, but really few were around. Was surprised that even after 1: AM found little to nothing around that circle, unfortunately. To pick up FLs best place IMO was Reggae Club. Large club. Reasonable music. Lots of gals. Get a vibe for the place. Make your move. Always bargain ahead of time: 500 for ST, 1000 for LT. All quickly agreed. Off we went.
One of the best gals I picked up there was late 30s or 40s. An outstanding dancer. My phil is if they can dance hard, they can f**k hard. Grabbed her. She had hard core pig-me (sp?) features, and it bought the animal out of me. Of thousands of BJs I've gotten, hers was perhaps the best. Slow. Easy. No hands at all. Only head bobbing. It lasted perhaps 45 minutes before spewing deep in her mouth. Most gals you can watch them giving head by the seconds on your watch. Not this gal. Older, experienced, willing, is an outstanding combo. After that gave her a hard tit f**king and spooged all over her nose, mouth. She took it like a pro and w/ a huge smile. No matter what I wanted, she complied. She also was thrilled in the morning when I gave her 1000 baht.
The way it was meant to be.

Report from Samui (Lamai).
Everything is fine here now. The businesses here have been severely hit by the political turmoil in Bangkok, as have many elsewhere in Thailand. Indeed, the girlie bars in Lamai and every other kind of business that depends on tourists are desperate for customers right now. It's low season to begin with, but the business people I have spoken with said they have never seen it this low.
I have taken bar girls and massage girls back to my hotel. Massage girls are as willing as the bar girls (obviously not every one, but of those I have talked with, only one gave me any vibe at all that made me think she wasn't available). The massage girls have consistently told me that I was their only customer in days. A couple I spoke with said they are going back home to Isaan because they can at least help their families do chores at home if they can't earn any money to send them here. I feel for them and give them something extra in their tip as a gesture.
The bars are largely empty of customers - not entirely, but compared to the same time two years ago when I was last here, I would say that the number of customers is easily no more than one quarter or one third what it was then. I don't really view it as an opportunity to negotiate a lower price (so long as the girl's asking price is "reasonable" - e.g., last night I had a fine time with one who wanted 1000 long time. Rather it is ideal for having my pick of exactly who I want, and as ever, there are some very nice ones here and many average ones.
Some bars are closing up shop, but there are plenty remaining.
As to details of my exploits, I have had a very fine BBBJ in a massage shop, had two other massages where the girls were surprised I did not want a massage "there" (was saving some skin on my cock for later), and had another massage lady back to my hotel for an overnighter, and spent one night hanging out with bar girls and eventually took one home last night. When I did not want to boom boom for the third time this morning, I was met with surprise... maybe just teasingly so. Anyway, it has been a fine and exhausting time!
So if you are interested in visiting Thailand - this may be a good time!

quick follow-up -- the one who did not put out the vibe that she was for rent turned out to be my first freebie in Thailand, and a really good one at that! Invited her out for a drink after work, and one thing led to another and we spent the night at my hotel. Never asked for a baht, - indeed, it was necessary to insist that I, not she pay the mamasan for her night out; and it was clear that offering any would insult her. I ended up taking another massage from her before leaving and giving her a big tip (still far less than I would pay for LT) as a way to give her a gift...

I would recommend this hotel with some reservation (no pun intended). The room was great, the location perfect (I stayed in one of the sea view villas - you literally step out of your door and walk 25 feet to the beach. Nice and very convenient for a quick dip without having to bring anything but yourself to the beach!), and the housekeeping staff was friendly and gave good service. They do have security at night that checked and held girls' ids, but it was spotty and easily avoided if you want (by hopping over the wall near my room or approaching from the beach).
On the negative side, I found the hotel owners to be rather unfriendly. Was barely greeted when I arrived, aside from the usual formalities, offered no information about breakfast, internet their pool or anything. Just given my key and showed to the room. The website says the room I was in included breakfast, but they seemed to think otherwise. Internet access meant, you buy their card, and either they or their ISP - Cyberpoint - blocked access to ISG! Fortunately, I was able to go next door to the Swing Bar and use their free wi-fi as much as I wanted. By the way, Swing Bar is a cool place - not for picking up girls, but for food and drinking right on or overlooking the beach... show sports on big screens, have pool tables, and laid back staff and atmosphere.
Also, I had a few hours before my flight and asked for a late checkout if they didn't have anyone coming into my room. Was greeted with a cold, yes i could for an extra half day fee. Thanks, but no thanks. I never got the feeling I was appreciated as a customer there, despite the tough times they must be having right now; that would make me consider my other options next time.

(the worst hotel I ever stayed at cost $225/night, just outside of Boston and there nothing else available. Place was beyond disgusting and far far worse than any 500 baht Thai hotel I've ever been at).
I strongly urge to consider "lowering" yourself, as I do always, and check out those hotels which are. Say 800 baht or less nightly. And never use a "travel agent". You may just like the place. And if enough people do this, and bargain, and bargain hard. just as the Thais themselves do. then perhaps the farang hotel prices will not get to levels seen back the States.
Also, I saw monthly rates for places in Lamai for. I recall it was about 12, 000 baht /monthly when pay in advance (plus extra for electricity / water).

Point 1: I am against the ever expanding prices which are meant for ding-dong farangs. Farang prices is rising way faster than inflation. If you bargain, Thais will have far more respect for you. And last I heard, Thailand is still mostly a third world country. Now especially, tourism is way way down, and prices too should be down. There no reason at all for hotel prices to now go up. But they are. For many. There no reason for Ark Bar to raise their price from 650 baht to over 2, 000 baht in just a few years for the exact same room, other than the fact that they are charging, and relying on. Well recall what PT Barnum once said. And it appears he correct. Within close walking distance of that hotel I found many places for under 1, 000 baht, and I stayed in one for 500 baht.
If I were staying in LOS for only a few days, yea I could care less. Sure. 1, 000 or 2, 000 baht nightly on a room. No problem. However, I often stay in Thailand for 3 months a year or longer, and it does add up.
Point 2: No, I do not "squeeze the ladies fees". OK, yes I do feel that bar beers and go-gos are a complete waste of money, as are LDs and the overpriced drinks. Point is that after I go to them, I feel demasculated as I do whenever I get overcharged. What would a girl prefer, a few lady drinks or a shopping trip? I've taken countless gals on occasion shopping, got her shoes, a hat, toys for her kids, whatever she likes. Cost is about the same, and yet I am convinced which she more appreciative of.

I like a huge plush bed, bathroom with 5 star amenities, free Wifi, LCD large TV with DVD Player and a working desk with sufficient lighting.
I usually stay in Junior suites or suites (Hyatt HuaHin or D2 Chiang Mai are Great)

It was not in the thick of the restaurant/bar scene in Lamai - rather, pretty far down that road going towards Chaweng - I think it was called Happy Massage, right next door to another massage place (both on the ocean side of the street).
Cannot recall the price - I think she pushed for a pretty high price, but I don't remember what it was. I do recall thinking - ok, this really was a skillful BBBJ, worth the price!

Will have my 16 (near 17) year old daughter with me. Of course I'm planning two rooms ( or bungalows ) to be able to get some fun. The most important thing is to do this with some descretion so the hotel is quite important. I need something on the better site of quality ( used to book suites at the JW Marriott, if I am in BKK myself ) but open enough, that nobody cares about a young lady the moment she left my door. I think bungalows should be the better choices. Location should be in a way, that during daytime and early evening it is easy to have some fun with my daughter and in the late evening some fun myself. Never been in KS before. You will probably have to concentrate either on Chaweng or in Lamai
Both locations are offering the range of hotel quality you are looking for (especially Chaweng) and still be at a short distance from the mongering bars wher to pick up your lady of the night.
There are high level resorts spread through the rock, but then reaching the pick up area (and the girl reurning back to her base) is a big challenge
Maenam offers a "Leding hotel in the World" chain resort, Santibury, directl yon the beach, a short mototaxi ride away from the two bar areas. The bar areas in Maenam are also less obvious than Chaweng.
I will be in Koh Samui end of August. I got a good deal on the Ibis in Bhoput (99 baht per night!). Is there any scene in Bhoput? Or is the closest action a motorbike ride away in Chaweng?

Actually, Accor website does say 99 baht net, but when you plug in the dates and go to actual prices, it ends up being something more like 999... probably they sold the few teasers they had at that price. So everyone was right!

and the Rooms at the Ibis Bophut are Tiny, the beach is not nice on their side of Bophut. Better try another Bophut Resort that will have space and a decent beach.

I got on it early and the website would not let me book consecutive nights, so to stay there for an extended period you have to pay internet rate evey second night (only about AUS$35). The cheap nights I could book worked out well with my itinery tho, I booked the 29th and 31st at the cheap rate and left the 30th. I'm planning on hiring a motorbike, so I'll throw some gerar in a backpack and go stay in Lamai for a night and leave my suitcase in storage til I come back the next night.
In Phuket I got Ibis Patong on the 1st and Ibis Kata on the 2nd, I like Kata so I'll stay somewhere else in Kata after that, unless I particularly like the Ibis.
Based purely on the website photos and tripadvisor reviews, the pools, beach etc sound ok, not amazing, but ok. Atthe end of the day, 99 baht is about AUS$4, so if I don't like the joints or get other plans I just won't show up, and lose my $4.

Right up the street from all the dive shops. there are 6 or 7 women and little competition--all the tourists here are 19 years old! The women were ok but not great and I was not tempted. But they are not awful either. Bring your own is a more romantic experience and more fun for non-sex reasons.

During my upcoming trip to Thailand I will spend a few nights in Samui and then a one or two in Ko Tao. Now, an idea keeps buzzing in my head: Ko Tao could provide the chance to sleep and shag on the beach, something I admit I've never done in my life.
It would be a buddy and I and, provided we both first find in Samui a girl we like enough to bring her along for the ride, Ko Tao seems (never been there before) like a place where it shouldn't be difficult to find a deserted little beach where you could spend the night gazing at the stars, skinny dipping and getting laid.
Do you guys think it would be safe?
Ko Tao appears to be too small to have any kind of criminality.
I'm guessing we would reach this idyllic beach by long-boat: should we ask the boatman to spend the night nearby, to make sure he doesn't go back telling everyone where we are?
Or, is this something plenty of people do, and so we run the risk of not being the only ones?
Finally, for those who have been to Ko Tao: any particular beach you'd recommend?
Guys, any kind of suggestion and comment is going to be welcome, as long as it helps me make up my mind.

I found another bar--Sawradee Bar or something like that--it is in the same place with Lee's Pizza restaurant, which is a great deal for all you can eat pizza and salad for 180 baht. The girls here are prettier than the other place and the bar fine is the same or similar. It is basically around the corner from the other bar. They have a pool table in the front where the girls play pool. There were no customers in either bar that I saw tonight. I had dinner in Lee's and spoke to 1 girl but came home alone---their English is just so limited!

I found a bar right near the tourist area called No Problem. Bar fine all night all inclusive 2000 after11 pm and 2500 before 11 pm. I prefer amateurs like in the Philippines so did not partake.
Funny to see some info regarding the tiny bar scene on Ko Tao. I recently spent just over a month there and can confirm that the 2500 all inclusive from two separate bars, Honey Bar and the Friend Bar which are closer to Chalok. I did not partake since I had better quality for 1000 plus BF at Samui and Pha Ngan. If going to Ko Tao it’s better to bring one from Samui.

No Problem Bar is located right in Sairee. But many of my friends live there and pass by so I didn't check it out. But promising for Ko Tao.
From a short stay on Ko Pha Ngan about a month ago now.
I took the Lomphraya catamaran from Samui around noon. In Thong Sala I sit in the Bath bus to Chaolaklum. The driver comes around and collects 150B from each passenger. I was about to leave and just hire a motorbike for the same price. With 11 adult passengers, this guy is making a good living. Normally a 10 km ride shouldn’t be more than 50B I think.
Chaolaklum is on the north side of the island and there is nothing happening there, which suits me well. I get a bungalow at Fanta Sea bungalows for 350B, simple fan bungalow with cold water shower, but right on the beach. They only have two bungalows rented out, so it’s very quiet.
The next day I drive around the island and I'm reminded that Haad Rin is a shit hole. Even at 10am I’m pestered by touts asking where I’m going. None of your fucking business! So I navigate myself over to the east coast. Whish I had a proper off road bike, but it’s no problem with a Honda Click though. Ao Thong Nai Pan is even more quiet and simple than Chaolaklum, a place I might consider for 2-3 days next time.
In the evening I have an excellent dinner at the Italian restaurant in Chaolaklum run by a very friendly Italian. And then it’s off to Thong Sala. There are a few beer bars about 2 km on the road from Thong Sala to Haad Rin. First place I stop is Smile Bar. I play some pool with a girl named Yu, ordinary by look, but very nice and friendly. I’m considering checking out the other bars for something better looking, but what the hell, she’ll do. 11 o’clock and we’re on the bike for a 15 min ride back to my bungalow. Happy with 1000B LT and a 400B barfine.
Next morning I drive her back to the bar where the girls actually lives, 5 of the in the back room. Had to get a flat tire fixed as well. And then it’s the boat back to Ko Tao.

My first time in Samui, I stayed in Chaweng.
CHAWENG
Having been to Patong in Phuket a year and a half ago, it comes natural for me to compare the two places. While Patong is a mongering destination where some regular tourists (mistakenly) happen to stop by, almost the contrary can be said for Chaweng, a beach town dedicated to regular tourism which also offers some prostitution, but not as the main draw.
There are 2 main mongering location (soi Green mango and soi Reggae, which I will cover later in more detail) but one is very small and the prostitution establishments are mixed with regular ones, while the other is hidden away from the main drag. In Patong, Bangla Road is both the main drag AND murder central.
The closest to in-your-face prostitution that Chaweng offers is the Pink Lady Massage in the south side of the beach road, where a few girls stand outside trying to get customers in.
In August the majority of tourist were Europeans, with Italians, French and Spanish being the most common, and all of them on the young side; I would say the average tourist age was 30-35.
It seemed to me there weren't many people around, but I was told this was the best summer in the last four years.
SOI GREEN MANGO
Quite small, U-shaped soi.
On one side most if not all the establishments cater to regular young tourists, while on the other there are about 5 or 6 beer bars with girls available. In the middle there's the Mango club, where supposedly one could get freelancers and off work bar girls, but I never saw anything worth my attention, and I couldn't be bothered to wait until past 3 in the morning. Anyway, given the scarcity of attractive providers, I doubt anything good looking would last that late.
It was from one of the beer bars that I got the girl in pic #5: blond hair aside, I think she's quite representative of the low average quality around.
GO-GO bars
There are 2 go-gos in soi Green Mango: Dream Girls and GB.
They are equally priced (600 bar-fine, 2000 ST, 3000 LT), and neither offers nude dancing: the girls always keep their clothes on.
Dream Girls, while not packed, generally had a decent amount of customers, but possibly only one good looking bird, who by the way didn't speak a word of intelligible English.
Coming from Walking St and Soi Cowboy though, what lacked the most was the atmosphere: no punters with a girl in each arm, no ping pong balls, no screaming, no crazy tipping.
GB was always empty but, in Samui terms, had a couple of good looking dancers plus a couple more of above average ones. It was from here that I plucked girl in pic #7, who also speaks near fluent English. Again from GB I got another dancer, for which I'll post a separate report.
SOI REGGAE
Despite the absence of punters, or maybe because of it, soi Reggae felt a bit more like Bangla road or soi 6 in Pattaya: girls (and ladyboys) don't just sit in a trance, but will rush in the middle of the street to grab you and try to lead you to their bar.
With the possible exception of the Reggae Pub at the end of the soi (never went there) all bars here are pick up ones, no regular or touristy venues.
For those of you who like me are in awe of Thai surgeons skills', if he's still there check out the very tall ladyboy in one of the first bars on the right: stunning legs and face.
Met here the girl in pic #6, who I believe is a lot better than my mobile pic shows (I took the snap in the morning after a very intense LT session). She stated to be quite new to the trade, which her limited English seemed to confirm, and gave me a pretty good GFE. De gustibus non disputandum est, but I thought she was very cute.
LAMAI
As reported elsewhere in this thread, Lamai tourists are not as young as those of Chaweng, and the atmosphere and lifestyle are probably a bit more relaxed. There are no go-gos, but probably more bars.
HOTEL
We stayed at the BB Chaweng Beach Resort.
Booked it through Asia. Rooms at 2000 a night instead of 2600, I believe.
Location is excellent: right on the beach and only 50 meters from soi Green Mango.
Rooms are spacious, although they've certainly seen better days.
I think there's wifi in the reception area.

RESTAURANTS
- I would say that the best compromise between quality, price and atmosphere is to be had in one of the many beach restaurants, although in August early evening showers were quite common.
- Captain Kirk has good food and a couple of very good looking waitresses.
- If you feel like something different, for a more expensive but still affordable price (1000/1500 baht) you can have very good churrasco meat at Zico's.
TRANSPORTATION
A taxi ride from Chaweng to the airport costs 250/350 one way.
A taxi ride to Lamai in the early evening costs 500, but if it rains it can shoot up to a 1000.
You can walk from soi Reggae to soi Green Mango, but it's a 10/15 minutes walk: baht-buses and moto-taxis are handy.
KO PHA NGAN – FULL MOON PARTY
On the days leading to the party I randomly asked some bar girls in Samui if they were going: out of about 30 only one said she was.
Once actually there I noticed a couple things, which may or may not happen regularly:
- There are very few girls, of medium to low quality, and they tend to be snatched up pretty quickly. I would say that by half past midnight all the decent ones were taken.
- They tend to congregate in close proximity to the small dancing stages which litter the beach.
- Facing the beach, most of them were on the left side.
KO TAO
Following a couple of recent reports by Tim Bone about the scene in Ko Tao, my buddy and I successfully made our way to a small cluster of bars about a 10 minutes walk from Mae Haad pier. We got there by 11pm on a rainy night, which was probably a little too late already, and only found one open with some girls idly waiting by. Had a drink and a game of connect four with them, but only one was decent and we were going to wake up very early the morning after, so in the end neither of us partook.
CONCLUSION
I was in Samui with my trusted buddy/wingman and had a good time, but I wouldn't go back by myself unless I planned on finding a rent-a-girlfriend for the duration of my stay.
In terms of mongering availability and atmosphere and quality of girls, Samui is light years away from Pattaya and quite distant from Phuket too, but if someone has never been to Thailand before, he would certainly have a blast. In fact, it could be a good place to start.

I've only been here in Lamai so I don't know how it affects the other parts of the island, but all the girly bars are dark, the farang and beach bars that serve food are open, but business is really slow. I imagine there are a lot of pissed off European tourists here with ruined holidays because of the alcohol ban.
I got here on Thursday so there was still some life my first day. Was worn out by the long flight so took a nap that went a little long. Woke up at 10: 30pm and decided to go check things out.
There appear to be 3 main areas for girly bars in Lamai. The cluster around the boxing ring across from Fusion Club, a small cluster a few steps down next to the McDonalds, and a strip of bars behind Lamai Plaza which wraps around to just behind the Swiss Chalet restaurant.
On my first night I went to the strip behind Lamai Plaza. The bars all seemed more or less open, but customers were few and they tended to gather around only a few bars. I don't enjoy being the only guy at a bar and having everyone focus on me so I went to one of the bars that had a decent crowd. I believe the one I went to was called the Na Na Bar close to the Swiss Chalet, but across the street.
There were about 9 girls inside the bar. Some serving, some dancing on the platform, some just milling around. Outside the bar there were other girls mixing with some of the customers. I don't know if they were associated with the bar or what, but they were all generally older and less attractive than the girls in the bar. As far as I was told, the bars were closed this last weekend and will be closed the 29th and 30th. They should be open this coming weekend. I can not guarantee that info, but that is what I heard so you should be OK on your trip.
I'm not sure specifically what bar you're referring to in Lamai Plaza. At the end of the Plaza after all vendors selling t-shirts and stuff, there are a few really small bars. The street curves left and then you hit the bigger bars(bigger than the ones at the boxing ring). This is where Dragon Bar and a few others are. Those all seemed to be open with lots of girls looking for clients.

KrumI was there in March or April and was told Nok was "busy" (with a nod towards the inside of the building). I have not been back there since, but in the interests of science I will check next time I'm in the area! I agree with the comments about her good looks and personality - she is also clever, definitely not your average working girl.

Visiting Koh Samui in February 2011, and looking for a GOOD dentist who can do some fairly serious stuff like replacement crowns, root canals etc. Low price not the prime objective (as will always be much less than in the West) , but 100% quality is a must. Any recommendations?

for those who may explore beyond the busy bars in chaweng and the go-go strips in lamai, there is a cluster of bars in maenam, on top of side road towards lomprayah pier and on main strip back towards chaweng. also towards bangrak.
most around bridge in maenam and my bar, but also a few rep001tered back from there. when the katoey show in chaweng empties out, some go to the karaoke bar in maenam. not my taste but gales of giggles erupting out into the night.
generally good company at all. maem hangs out near jano bar and knew of a st place nearby.

so8my bar is always a good spot for pick ups. sufficient variety, great music, opens till very late, very late.
the cluster of bars on the side road to lomprayah pier has decreased a bit its level.
yo-yo (where i found an unexpected hot syt in springtime) was closed when i was there in october.
sabai-sabai does not work properly when the lady manager (owner?) is not at the wheel.
seems the shadow of the sabai_sabai i knew before.
geko (opposite sabai-sabai) has max two girls of not much attraction.
after my bar, direction chaweng / airport / bhoput, one can still find a good set of bars: lemon bar, lucky laundry, jack's, ok bar.
you will never find stunners (or very difficult to) or 9's by a dozen.
but surely a lot of honest and willing girls.
able to laugh and have fun when at the bar, and not pushy at all on drinks. happy you take them back home for a lt at 1000b.

The two go-go bars in Chaweng are GB Lounge and Dream Girls. Both have some good dancers. Dream girls (at start of Soi Mango on left) is the bigger and busier but worth having a draft through GB also. It has a couple of 8s and some others who are worth a look. The gallery pics there look dated so attached are two girls from Dreamgirls to give you a better idea of more recent talent. The other bars are busy too but only these two are go-gos.

From what I have read there are only 2 like that in chaweng: dream girls and GB lounge, does anybody know how much is the entrance fee and the drinks? Or are there any more of this type of bars in chaweng?
How about Lamai? From what I've read I gathered there are no places like this in Lamai, they're all open concept beer bars with a pole. Is this true?

Last night the places on the street leading up to Reggae Pub looked pretty quiet, but it was Monday. Was my first time back since October, so hoping it's better later in the week. Mango still better than anything in Lamai.
I humbly disagree. Chaweng is definitely livelier and clubs like Green Mango, Sound Club are more glitzy. Chaweng has a much younger crowd (most early or mid twenties) and more farang girls. During the one week I spent in Chaweng I really had a difficult time finding a doable Thai girl though.
In contrast, Lamai is smaller, more laid back, and more Thai. People are certainly less commercial and less hardened in Lamai. There is local community vibe. I personally like Lamai more. The beach is great and less crowded. I can live without Starbucks, gourmet food, and glitzy night clubs. There are many girlie bars and a somewhat decent club / meet market (Fusion). Make no mistake, it is not Pattaya but has elements of it. For a single man looking sea, sun, sanook and boom boom with Thai ladies, Lamai is worth giving a try.

Newbie Alert. Bieng a non drinker, I've been trying to track down a bar that dosent mind you ordering a soda. I realise this is sounding trivial, but mongering sober is not plain sailing and even though dishing out the bar fines, I feel the bar owners are thinking, whens this cheap bastard gonny buy a beer.
Anyhow on a brighter note, I met an older bird working off a massage stand on the beach, so no beer sales needed here. She aint massaging, but playing cards and passing time till a punter comes along. Very heavy breasted for a thai and one helluva ride to boot. Its the only stand on that stretch of beach, and wondering if anyone else had sampled this more mature item.

What are you disagreeing with? If younger, try Chaweng first. Otherwise, if old, go direct from airport to Lamai. You'll find some girls who 'prefer old' while others will ignore you and focus on young farang. If you had a difficult time finding doable, it's because they might have all been taken by guys they found more attractive or else by guys paying to keep them long-term. Overall, not a lot of difference in the girls: like most everywhere, it all depends on how long they've been working. And, on you.

I am disagreeing with the advice one should start with Chaweng unless one is 60+. In my opinion, for sex tourists, Lamai is a better option and this this has nothing to do with age. I personally dislike Chaweng even as a regular tourist. Too crowded, too many reminders of the modern life that I was hoping to escape from for a while (McD, Starbucks, gourmet restaurants, boutiques, etc.).
I am in my early thirties and above average good looking. More than a few times I had bar girls stay with me just for free or at deeply discounted rates (1000 bt every 2-3 day or so + no bar fine). The offer usually comes from them. I am now in Lamai and the same thing happened with a girl from the Billabong Bar. I pay her every now and then but she certainly could make much more if she went with a different farang every night (and she can). Girls in Lamai are somewhat less jaded than BKK and Pattaya girls.
I rented a house in Lamai for a month which is only a minute away from Fusion. It works for me.
As for the bars. I don't hang out much in them because I am trying to minimize my drinking. There are just too many of them but as Golfinho mentioned they are most of them are understocked. The busier bars with relatively better girls are Dragon Bar (had much better days) , the bar right next to Dragon Bar in the same alley, Billabong Bar at the end of the same alley. Also around the boxing there are two bars that are relatively well stocked: the one right in the corner across the food carts around the boxing ring (I think it is called Love Shack) and the two bars right next to it.
Fusion is dregs with some gems though. Many girls come to Fusion when not barfined. Actually mamasans of some bars force their girls to go to Fusion to generate more visits to their bar. There are also many freelancers that come to Fusion.
Quality of girls in Chaweng and Lamai are certainly less than BKK but on par with Pattaya. In my experience Chaweng is no better than Lamai. The problem with Samui in general is that the selection is not as wide as in BKK and Pattaya. If you want to have a vacation in a tropical island with occasional boom boom it can certainly be had in Samui. Or alternatively you could bring your teerak with you from Pattaya. If you are in Thailand only for sex then Samui is not recommended.

For longer stays, yes all kinds of semi-working situations develop. After a bit, they'll come around in the afternoon to early evening knocking on your door. Pay them what you will. This happens in all environments (not just Samui) with girls who need money from the 'walking wallets. ' after March, Samui thins out a lot, and in truth it isn't really the 'cutting edge' of sex tourist destinations.
How is the place now? Always curious as my trips only fall December to February. Do prices fall and I dare say a few of the girls will head back to Issan to the family. Arrived the 1st December last year and Lamai was dead. Still, less competition for an old dude like me haha.

Can not find an explanation. More and more tourists are coming with package holiday, haeding to resorts that are not close to the main centres.
Mainly family oriented.
They tend to stay (and spend money) where their residence is.
Les and less are coming alone or in small mongering groups.
So the bars, living out of them, are suffering.
To give you an idea here are several girls that I pulled from various bars in Lamai. Obviously they are no stunners but all of them were very amateurish and eager to please. Despite the limited supply of quality girls Lamai works for me.
One of the girls was totally new to Lamai. I attached a picture of her English phrase book.
