i guessing that bec26 has had more than a few incidences when the waitress didn't understand him when he was asking for a "kekou-kele." ;) jk man.
as for the no [CodeWord131] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord131), the spitting, and not picking up after pets, chinese have a culturally instilled belief that body excretions are dirty and unhealthy. they believe leaving a baby to sit for even 10 minutes in a soiled [CodeWord132] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord132) is unhealthy for the baby. the same goes for the spitting thing. they think swallowing saliva or mucus or what have you is dirty and unhealthy. if the chinese think baby shit is dirty and healthy, what do you think they think about dog shit? ain't nobody gonna touch that.
People are people - doesn't matter where you are. If 5% if the people in America are complete assholes, then I reckon around 5% of the people in China are complete assholes. In my opinion, virtually all of the anger, frustration, and hostility that foreigners here have while living or visiting comes from within - a voice that is asking "why can't they be more like I think they should be?" I'm buddhist, and maybe that shifts my thinking a bit, but I can't hate people who are doing what culturally they have always done and have always not had a problem with. If I was born with a twin brother, and I got sent to China as an infant, while my brother was sent to a wealthy American family, I'd probably squat a lot, spit all the time, and eat tripe once a week. And I'd read with amazement about the crime rates and violence in america and think WTF is wrong with those people

the fact that china uses split pants for infants instead of [CodeWord131] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord131) is technically better in that there are not millions and millions of used [CodeWord131] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord131) laying about. just think about how large those landfills will be!
there was a ny times article on this very topic last month about american parents practicing early potty training and not using [CodeWord131] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord131).
china is not the only country that does this. most developing countries follow this practice.
as well, the infant is potty trained much sooner.
actually, if you think about it, wallowing in your own shit and [CodeWord140] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord140) because you are wearing a [CodeWord132] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord132) is not such a fun thought. it also causes [CodeWord132] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord132) rash.
just think back on this conversation fondly when you guys are all 80 years old and have to wear a depends adult [CodeWord132] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord132).

You know what's funny? I have a good friend who's Chinese. I remember when I first met him about 11 years ago, we were going out for dinner to discuss some stuff. Anyway, I got in his car and he drove. I swear to god I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. He was out-NYcabbieing the NY cabbies in his BMW! If he had 3 inches to spare, he'd cut across two lanes to get in front of a guy. I had never had that much excitement in a car without including sex. My heart was pounding and I'm sure my blood pressure was at it's all time high during the 20 minute ride. We finally got the the restaurant and when I got out, I noticed my legs were trembling a little bit. Since then, I've been to China dozens of times and probably spent the equivalent of at least 2-3 years there riding around in a lot of cabs and hiring a lot of drivers. A ride in my friend's car doesn't even make me break a sweat now.

Winters are cold and dry, summers are hot and humid, and there is constant dust storm leaving residue on everything you touch. On top of that, P4P is among the most expensive in the country. Beijing is only an option, if there are no others.
Just my POV.

It is safe to go to a hospital in China if you think you have caught – STD? Or is it better to visit Hong Kong?
What do you guys think?

IMHO,How about Zhuhai China,Its one of the cleanest and greenest cities in China,A 5 minute hop from the Russians,Thais,Latinas etc in Macau,Just in case you get tired of Chinese.P4P lower then Shenzen prices and being a smaller city 500,000 its more layed back then SZ or GZ But you are a quick ferry ride from HK or a walk away from the Macau border if you want to leave China for a break.Weather is pleasant being Subtropical
I don't know about China, but in HK they are very professionel. If you hold a HK ID, a total checkup is free of charge, otherwise about 700 HKD.
A result for Bactreria (Gonorrhea, Clamydia) is available after 5 minutes, blood check takes 3 weeks (HIV, Syphillis). In case of bacteria they give you the medicine right away.
You want to go to the "Social Hygiene Clinic".

Tiger, just for the record, I wasn't the one asking the question, it was Swedster. I followed up just to see if his was a case of panic (accidental condom break) or if he indeed had symptoms, and if so what they were.
A well prepared traveller will carry 500 mg doses of Ciprofloxacin to cure traveler's diarrhea. Guess what is used to cure Gonnorhea? A 500 mg dose of Ciprofloxacin. That same traveller may also carry along a "Zpack" (azithromyacin), to help address upper resperatory bugs. Guess what is used to cure Chlamidya? Yup, azithromyacin.
If you've got something else, I don't know what to tell you. Zithro may also work against Syph, but I don't know that for sure.
China does seem to have a thing about folks with STDs. I don't know what would happen to visa eligability if you come down with something. Best advice I think is to get the hell out of dodge, find a western doctor somewhere else, and get treated without bothering the Chinese government.
Take *ALL OF THIS* with a grain of salt, because I am *NOT* a doctor. I would not recommend avoiding proper diagnosis, but I might avoid having that diagnosis done in China.

Just to make that clear, Tiger1 mentioned correctly: "Social Hygiene Clinic" - they are HK government run and free for HK ID card holders. Means a normal doctor/clinic will charge you a normal price.
Here a list of all in HK:

The Problem with many STD is that the first symptoms are often very similar and it's without a bloodtest not possible to know what you cought.

Web search indicates that the treatment for Syphilis is penecillin, by injection, and if the case is bad, it could include as many as 10 injections over 10 days. Doesn't sound like something a ZPack would cure!
Again, I'M NOT A DOCTOR! I just know how to use Google.

I totally agree. I was intending only to address the issue of the China Government, not trying to advise on how to avoid getting a diagnosis. (Although, fyi, Gonnorhea does not require a blood test - it is done by examining the discharge (yuk!) under a microscope. There may be a blood test too, for all I know...)
In fact, I have no idea what China will do to a visitor who contracts an STD. I would like to know. Does anyone know? Will such a thing keep you from getting a Visa in the future?
This to me is an essential question for a frequent visitor.

I would not go for any doctors/hospitals in China, except a few in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. There is a web site ( I will find the details) for travellers. Once I went to the American Hospital in Paris; service was good. There are a few doctors/hospitals recommended by this web site.
In Hong Kong, it is another story. The service is comparable, if not better, than that in Canada or France. I will go to the Social Hygiene Clinic in Yaumatei, run by the government, which involves only a small fee. Even more convenient, I will pop by any general practitioner for treatment or a referral. The initial treatment will cost less than hkd250, medication included.
If you have AIDS, you are mandated to go to a government clinic.
The Clinic in Yaumatei, Battery Street right at the dead end of the road, past the Jade market, is the one I was talking about. (10 mins walk from the Jordan MTR station)
There you would have to pay 700 HK$ in the Social Hygiene Clinic, 3rd floor.
(free for HK residents)
I would go to see a doctor there rather than taking some antibiotics without diagnosis. They know why you need to come back for a recheck after taking the medicine.
And an STD can hardly be an emergency that doesn't allow you to come to HK from Guangdong if you go early enough.
The service is very professional as I have mentioned before.

I can enlighten you on having STD test in China and any impact on living here.
The easiest infections to get are chlamydia and micoplasma gentitalious and both can be obtained from a BBBJ (I know). I have had those two a couple of times during my time in China and at different cities. I have been to the SOS clinic at one of the cities and obtained the Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin doses and I have also administered them myself on occasions. However, I have a fixed girlfriend and infected her after I had a BBBJ from a hooker and we went to the local hospital together. There wasn't a problem and the hospital diagnosed the two infections above. They took my details of course but there's been no problem with that (so far). I'm not sure without checking on the web if the aforementioned infections are STD's or are classed as NSU's.

I have discovered a tiny cyst on the outside of my right testical. It is like a little dangling rasberry, less than an eighth of an inch in diameter. It rubs against my underwear and has started to sting a little.
Does anyone know what it might be? Should it be removed? Appreciate any serious reply. PM me if you want.
Santa - come on, just go to the doctor. You don't want to take the advice of a bunch of (mainly) anonymous mongerers and , when it comes to something that could be serious. Even tho it is probably nothing big at all.
Get yourself to the doctor right now. Like tomorrow.
Why take a chance that you may get incorrect advice from the boards ?
Santa,
Indeed, go to the doctor. It's most likely a wart and you do want it removed, for your sake and your partner's. Do some research on HPV, Human Pappilomavirus. http://www.ashastd.org/hpv/hpv_learn_fastfacts.cfm
Santa,
Sounds like you might have one of 4 possibilities.
1) Pimple.
2) Ingrown hair.
3) Genital wart.
4) Genital herpes.
The first two are obviously easily remedied. The other two are obviously a little trickier with the last being a permanent situation since there's no cure. Anyway, if I were you, I'd go to a hospital and have it checked out. Chinese hospitals aren't bad. I was in and out of 'em last year when I had some severe back pain.
Got a PM from a member who suggested it was a "skin tag". It certainly looks like the picture. I think t is not herpies and I always use a rubber.I will have it looked at when I get to a city with good doctors and let you know.
Right now I have just arrived in Zhengzhou. No good mongering report yet but i'm out looking around.
VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Especially to Moody who has been a little homesick after missing the baseball game.

'Second Wives' Are Back
Mistresses are again a status symbol in China. As scandal spreads, the government worries that they are a motive for public corruption.
By Don Lee
LA Times Staff Writer
November 22, 2005
SHANGHAI — Li Xin knelt in a hotel room here, wearing polka-dot boxer shorts and a grimace on his face.
The deputy mayor of Jining, in Shandong province, was pleading with his lover not to report him to authorities.
But in the end, the 51-year-old official was exposed and sentenced to life in prison. His crime: accepting more than $500,000 in bribes, which he used to support at least four mistresses in Jining, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Li's transgressions were minor compared with those of other public officials. A top prosecutor in Henan province, for example, was recently stripped of his post and Communist Party membership after investigators alleged that he embezzled $2 million to support his lavish lifestyle — and seven mistresses.
"Everyone is saying, 'Behind every corrupt official, there must be at least one mistress,' " says Li Xinde, an anti-corruption activist who researched Li Xin's case and posted on his website a photo of the deputy mayor begging in the hotel room.
China's economic boom has led to a revival of the 2-millennium-old tradition of "golden canaries," so called because, like the showcase birds, mistresses here are often pampered, housed in love nests and taken out at the pleasure of their "masters."
Concubines were status symbols in imperial China. After the Communists took power, they sought to root out such bourgeois evils, even as Chairman Mao Tse-tung reportedly kept a harem of peasant women into his old age.
Now, mistresses have become a must-have for party officials, bureaucrats and businessmen.
"We are in a commodity economy," says retired Shanghai University sociologist Liu Dalin. "Work, technology, love, beauty, power — it's all tradable."
So-called concubine villages — places where lotharios keep "second wives" in comfort and seclusion — are now spread across the nation, in booming cities such as Dongguan, Chengdu and Shanghai.
So common is the practice that it has spawned an industry of private detectives snooping on cheating husbands and their paramours. One such agency, called Debang, based in the western city of Chengdu, underscores how "first wives" are fighting back.
Debang was started by divorced women with one goal: to help desperate wives ferret out their double- and triple-timing husbands and make them pay for their indiscretions.
Debang wouldn't comment, but informed people say the firm has expanded into several cities and has a staff of more than 100.
The mistress boom is contributing to a surge in divorces — and fierce battles over property when relationships collapse. Not long ago, Beijing amended the country's marriage law to make men who indulge in mistresses pay heavy penalties and to give their spouses greater rights in separations.
Now, local governments are starting to take action.
This year the city of Nanjing issued an order for all public officials to register their extramarital relationships. In Guangzhou, a prosperous city in the south, a major university issued stern warnings to female students about having affairs and wrecking marriages. And last month, state media reported that Hainan province had stipulated that party members who kept mistresses or had children outside of marriage would be expelled.
Government leaders worry that philandering also could have detrimental effects on China's economy and the credibility of the Communist Party.
State-run banks and agencies have lost billions of dollars to embezzlement and fraud, many at the hands of officials seeking money to support their golden canaries. In a government review of 102 corruption cases in several Guangdong province cities a few years ago, every one involved an illicit affair.
"If a government official has a mistress, there must be some corruption," says Sun Youjun, a private investigator in Shanghai. "Visits to high-end hotels are not easy with officials' incomes."
Like most bureaucrats, Li Xin had a monthly paycheck of no more than a few hundred dollars. But as deputy mayor for a city of 8 million that's a regional industrial and rail center, Li could easily boost his income. He collected bribes from more than 40 businesses in exchange for helping them with land deals, commodity sales and construction projects, according to interviews and to reports in state-owned media.
Li had a penchant for drinking, people familiar with the case said, and he showered his ladies with expensive gifts and even sheltered some of them in homes.
He met his match in Li Yuchun, the woman who took the photo of him in the hotel room. The two started out as lovers, according to some accounts, and then became business partners.
Li Yuchun exposed him after she learned he was laundering money. After she blew the whistle, she also was sent to jail this summer for five years for harboring a criminal, her brother — a sentence that drew public outcry over the risks of exposing corrupt government officials.
She was so enraged at her prosecution that in the courtroom, she bit her finger and with the blood scrawled on paper: "This is revenge," her lawyer, Jin Xuekong, said.
"She has a very strong spirit," he said.
Jin wouldn't talk about his client's relationship with the former deputy mayor.
As in most cases involving corruption, government officials refused to comment. But in Chinese Internet chat rooms, some called Li Yuchun a "hero mistress."
In Chinese society, the practice of keeping concubines is thought to date back to the Qin Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago, when Confucianism took hold and women were considered inferior.
An entire set of protocols developed on the relationship between men, their spouses and so-called little wives, or concubines. One rule specified how often a man was to have sex with his concubine (every five days).
In subsequent dynasties, concubines were sometimes traded for things or sold or rented to traveling businessmen. Men regarded mistresses as markers of wealth and their elite status in society.
For mistresses, their value and rank largely depended on whether they were able to produce a son and on their dealings with other concubines, a complex relationship that was captured in the haunting 1991 Chinese movie "Raise the Red Lantern."
Unlike in feudal China when affairs were private matters, today's dirty laundry is often aired in the online world. This summer, Chinese media and Web surfers were caught up in the sensational story of the "richest mistress in Shanghai."
Da Beini, 23, became a celebrity after her public row with a 36-year-old Taiwanese businessman over her attempt to sell in an online auction a garden villa in the city of Chongqing, a white Lexus sedan and other items that many assumed were gifts from her benefactor.
At a Starbucks in a high-rent district here, Da denied during an interview that she was a mistress. She wore a black leather jacket and clutched a Louis Vuitton handbag — an original, she said, showing the tags inside. Dangling from her right earlobe were silver letters spelling Dior, and around her neck was a large white topaz.
She said her clothes, her jewelry, her properties — five apartments and villas — were bought with money she earned largely by investing in China's booming real estate market about $4,000 inherited from her mother three years ago.
"I really don't know why," Da said of the numerous reports in Chinese media that depicted her as a mistress.
"It's the thinking of the whole Chinese society. If you're young and have material things and not bad looking, they assume you must be a mistress."
Wei Wujun, known in China as the "Mistress Killer" because of his prowess for uncovering illicit relations, blames extramarital relationships on post-revolutionary China's "spiritual vacuum."
Last year, 1.6 million married couples in Chinese split up, a 21% jump from 2003, according to government data. Overall, China's divorce rate, or the number of breakups divided by marriages, now hovers at about 20%, a fivefold increase since the nation began economic reforms more than two decades ago.
Mao gave ideology to the Chinese, Wei said, but materialism is now their god. And many people with power and money are never satisfied, he said.
"There's little government can do to stop it," said Wei, taking a deep drag on a cigarette in front of a gaudy apartment complex, known as a concubine village, in Shanghai's high-end Gubei district.
Few Chinese believe that laws seeking to limit extramarital affairs will have any significant effect on a system in which bureaucrats work largely in secret.
"In developed countries … if an official keeps a mistress and buys a house that's not compatible with his income, almost everyone will know overnight," says Huang Jingping, professor of law at Renmin University in Beijing. In China, even when fraud is apparent to insiders, it can go on for years.
As head of Chongqing's vehicle licensing department, Bian Zhongqi accepted bribes from driving school operators and car dealers who wanted licenses or plates. He and his mistress, Zhou Changhui, came up with a plan for a steady income stream.
Drivers seeking renewals of their licenses were supposed to pay a $6 fee and pass a review of health and driving records. Bian and Zhou extracted an additional $12 to let applicants skip the process, handing out licenses to thousands.
From 1999 to 2004, authorities said, the couple collected nearly $400,000.
Standing recently in a small courtroom in Chongqing, a few feet away from his accomplice and lover, Bian sobbed as he explained why he had fallen.
It wasn't greed, the 38-year-old insisted, suggesting that he collected the bribes to keep his mistress happy.
"It's all because I couldn't resist sexual temptation," he said.

I believe having a mistress and second/third/fourth/... wife was common before the Communist took over. There was a movie called, "Raise the Red Lantern", (1992) that was about this situation in 1920 China. Each time a red lantern was raised, it informed everyone which wife was having sex with the master. Interesting movie because it showed the tension, cutthroat and jealousy between the wives. This movie was BAND for several years in China.

Bec you raised a valid point tho - I am type "A" and a hot reactor, so sometimes I get a little too lathered up on things like this. I guess in this case it's because my first wife was Peruvian and I had to put up with her hatred of asians (part of the reason she is my ex), and also because I participate in several online forums, and in those forums, posts like his would be deleted by a moderator in minutes.
Bob B - you are also correct. No point in getting riled up. Just like online advice about trolls - don't feed 'em, just ignore 'em

One Wing Low,
I cannot argue with your assesment that "China is at the bottom of the world." However, is it enough a reason to hate the people? Its not their fault they were born here. Lord only knows how many of them are illegally trying to get out of the country to better themselves. I work closely with the US embassy and consulates and I can offer you first hand perspectives on how many people are paying thousands of US dollars for an illegal visa to get not just America, but just about anywhere they can to try and better themselves.
I have said some harsh things about the Chinese in my past posts but those are my views. I just like poking fun at somebody when they are down. Why not, they are that much closer to your foot.
The chinese are intelligent and hard working people. Sure there have been problems and mistakes, which individual, nation or civilization has not made them.
As proof of their abilities just look at their accomplishments over the last 30 years. Massive changes!
China was the world's greatest and most powerful nation while Europe was going through an age of ignorence and superstition now known as the Dark Ages.
China is NOT at the bottom and one day may again be at the top!!!

My observations are based on well-publicized achievements in economics, science, culture, education, morality, spirituality, health, living standards, happiness, prospects...of the people.
The truths sometimes hurt.
Does anybody have arguments that China is NOT at the bottom of the world, besides the abundant availability of cheap pussies, that is?
One Wing Low,
How could you possibly come to the conclusion that china is at the bottom of the world based on publications? You must be joking.
You make some pretty wide generalizations about life in China. You don't have a clue about what it is like to live in China.
What truth are you talking about? Every country has its pros and cons. the prospects of Chinese people are currently improving faster than any other nation. Per GDP growth is incredible here, creating the largest emerging middle class in the world.
You ask for anyone to provide arguments proving China is NOT at the bottom of the world? You haven't provided anything of proof that it is. You claim publications have written this? Please provide citations. If you want any credibility, you have to have some damn good arguments to make such strong statements about a whole country with 1.3 billion people.
You are pretty obnoxious for making such wide sweeping generalized remarks that don't mean anything. You sure have a lot of hatred, it shows in your previous postings.
Perhaps you should get a life.
MAB
Lets not get ahead of ourselves here, they will never be at the top of anything as long as the govt. here is being hypocritical. You cannot claim to be communist and have only a handful of people running the country while allowing free commercialization to run rampant in your backyard. They need to decide on thier identity before they can really move forward and give prosperity back to the masses.
Perhaps these people who have mistresses are hoping that they can get a better GFE for their money than just spending it on ST?
I'll stay out of the government debate. I've been here for around 8 years; the Chinese have me beat by around 4992 years, give or take 500.
Regarding the assertion that China is somehow ass-backwards:
1. How many nations have launched men into space ? Out of all the nations on earth, there are only 3. China of course is one of them, and they are working on a mission to the moon. Yes, I can see how that may be construed as backwards
2. Ask any scientist - anywhere - to name the countries with the highest amount of pure research in chemistry, astronomy, physics, and mathematics, and China will consistantly be listed in the top 5, if not top 3. Again, I can see how people would conclude that China is lagging the rest of the world.
3. Engineering. Ask any large scale engineering organization - private or public, profit or non-profit, to list the 2 countries on earth graduating the most engineers, and it's going to be India and China. Ask those same groups where the most engineering research is going on, and it will be the US, China, Germany, India, and Japan.
4. Architecture. Where is the most innovative designing being done on earth right now ? In China. Where do the leading schools of architecture and design in Europe and America send their students to study ? China is almost always on the itinerary.
I could go on and on. China is a developing nation, the future is indeed bright. How some can fail to see this is beyond my understanding. I guess that saying "in the land of the blind, a one-eyed man is king" is true.
But hey, I respect everyones right to not like a person, country, race, or skin color. If one does not care for chinese people or chinese culture, then just don't come here.
One final word : The USA has 4% of the worlds population. Methinks it would behoove each and every american citizen to get to know how the other 96% of the people on earth think, live, eat, and interact with the world. Far too many american know-it-alls feel they have the right to preach to the rest of the world on how to live their lives, and to judge other based on comparisons with america. That's intellectually lazy.

As to being nasty and ignorant, read your own posts on how you lambast Chinese in general. With your general intolerance of the local population, I am bewildered how any organisation could employ you to work in a foreign country. To be sure, Asians have a lot to learn from you.

A Party Girl Leads China's Online Revolution
By HOWARD W. FRENCH
The New York Times
SHANGHAI, Nov. 23 - On her fourth day of keeping a Web log, she introduced herself to the world with these striking words: "I am a dance girl, and I am a party member."
"I don't know if I can be counted as a successful Web cam dance girl," that early post continued. "But I'm sure that looking around the world, if I am not the one with the highest diploma, I am definitely the dance babe who reads the most and thinks the deepest, and I'm most likely the only party member among them."
Thus was born, early in July, what many regard as China's most popular blog.
Sometimes timing is everything, and such was the case with the anonymous blogger, a self-described Communist Party member from Shanghai who goes by the pseudonym Mu Mu.
A 25-year-old, Mu Mu appears online most evenings around midnight, shielding her face while striking poses that are provocative, but never sexually explicit.
She parries questions from some of her tens of thousands of avid followers with witticisms and cool charm.
Chinese Web logs have existed since early in this decade, but the form has exploded in recent months, challenging China's ever vigilant online censors and giving flesh to the kind of free-spoken civil society whose emergence the government has long been determined to prevent or at least tightly control.
Web experts say the surge in blogging is a result of strong growth in broadband Internet use, coupled with a huge commercial push by the country's Internet providers aimed at wooing users. Common estimates of the numbers of blogs in China range from one million to two million and growing fast.
Under China's current leader, Hu Jintao, the government has waged an energetic campaign against freedom of expression, prohibiting the promotion of public intellectuals by the news media; imposing restrictions on Web sites; pressing search engine companies, like Google, to bar delicate topics, particularly those dealing with democracy and human rights; and heavily censoring bulletin board discussions at universities and elsewhere.
So far, Chinese authorities have mostly relied on Internet service providers to police the Web logs. Commentary that is too provocative or directly critical of the government is often blocked by the provider. Sometimes the sites are swamped by opposing comment - many believe by official censors - that is more favorable to the government.
Blogs are sometimes shut down altogether, temporarily or permanently. But the authorities do not yet seem to have an answer to the proliferation of public opinion in this form.
The new wave of blogging took off earlier this year. In the past, a few pioneers of the form stood out, but now huge communities of bloggers are springing up around the country, with many of them promoting one another's online offerings, books, music or, as in Mu Mu's case, a running, highly ironic commentary about sexuality, intellect and political identity.
"The new bloggers are talking back to authority, but in a humorous way," said Xiao Qiang, director of the China Internet Project at the University of California, Berkeley. "People have often said you can say anything you want in China around the dinner table, but not in public. Now the blogs have become the dinner table, and that is new.
"The content is often political, but not directly political, in the sense that you are not advocating anything, but at the same time you are undermining the ideological basis of power."
A fresh example was served up last week with the announcement by China of five cartoonlike mascot figures for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. They were lavishly praised in the press - and widely ridiculed in blogs that seemed to accurately express public sentiment toward them.
"It's not difficult to create a mascot that's silly and ugly," wrote one blogger. "The difficulty is in creating five mascots, each sillier and uglier than the one before it."
A leading practitioner of the sly, satirical style that is emerging here as an influential form of political and social commentary is a 38-year-old Beijing entertainment journalist named Wang Xiaofeng. Mr. Wang, who runs a site called Massage Milk, is better known to bloggers by his nickname, Dai San Ge Biao, which means Wears Three Watches.
His blog mixes an infectious cleverness with increasingly forthright commentary on current events, starting with his very nickname, which is a patent mockery of the political theory of the former Chinese Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin, which was labeled San Ge Dai Biao, or the Three Represents.
In a recent commentary, as the government stoked patriotic sentiment during the commemoration of the defeat of the Japanese in World War II, Mr. Wang asked who really fought the enemy, making the provocative observation that only two Communist generals had died fighting Japan, while more than 100 of their Nationalist counterparts had.
"In blogging I don't need to be concerned about taboos," Mr. Wang said. "I don't need to borrow a euphemism to express myself. I can do it more directly, using the exact word I want to, so it feels a lot freer."
Another emerging school of blogging, potentially as subversive as any political allegory, involves bringing Chinese Web surfers more closely in touch with things happening outside their country.
Typically, this involves avid readers of English who scour foreign Web sites and report on their findings, adding their own commentary, in Chinese blogs.
Several bloggers like this have become opinion leaders, usually in areas like technology, culture, current events or fashion, building big followings by being fast and prolific.
One of the leading sites was run by Isaac Mao, a Shanghai investment manager who had built a following writing about education and technology. His site, isaacmao.com, was later blocked by the authorities after he posted a graphic purporting to illustrate the workings of the firewall operated by the country's censors.
Mr. Mao, an organizer of the first national bloggers' conference in Shanghai this month, recently went back online at isaacmao.blogbus.com/s1034872/index.html.
By far the biggest category of blogs remains the domain of the personal diary, and in this crowded realm, getting attention places a premium on uniqueness.
For the past few months, Mu Mu, the Shanghai dancer, has held pride of place, revealing glimpses of her body while maintaining an intimate and clever banter with her many followers, who are carefully kept in the dark about her real identity.
"In China, the concepts of private life and public life have emerged only in the past 10 to 20 years," she said in an online interview. "Before that, if a person had any private life, it only included their physical privacy - the sex life, between man and woman, for couples.
"I'm fortunate to live in a transitional society, from a highly political one to a commercial one," she wrote, "and this allows me to enjoy private pleasures, like blogging."
Could we please get back to the subject of this forum.

...who knows how to push the edge of the envelop to gain freedom of expression for herself and her people.
I am saying this before I looked at the pic. It does not hurt that she has a beautiful body, and is using it in tasteful ways to propagate her views. I know a few offsprings of revolutionaries closest to Mao, who have been seething in anger with the lack of personal freedoms in China. It's very nice to be free and sexy at the same time.
Would love to meet this avant-garde comrade. I can think of many ways I can 'exchange' my views with her. Perhaps Mock A Bee could arrange a personal introduction when I am in Beijing in Dec.

While buying barbecued meat on a wooden scewer from a muslim street vendor, a french guy told me that they sell "rat meat and call it beef, and that's why it's so tender and delicious".
He insisted that he got this info from a guy involved in that trade and swore it to be true.
Any comments?

BS. Rat meat in China is rare and not from common rats. It's from country side field rats which are raised for meat. I also doubt very strongly that a muslim would sell a product which probably conflicts with the 'halal' procedure.
And anyway, those 'Zhuang' are usually mutton, not beef.
I would file it under "yet another urban legend about chinese food".
BTW, the Monkey brain is a myth too.

DayNight:
Unless they put on a show just for me, the monkey brain is not a myth. I went to a restaurant in Huadu years ago and they served it through a hole in the table and sliced off the head. I almost lost my lunch and was not able to eat any of it though.
OAH

Here's a couple photos I took at a restaraunt that Johnny and I went to in Foshan a couple years back. Even some of the Chinese people at the table were disbelieving at first, but they weren't Guangdong people. I think, in Guangdong, rat meat is fairly common in the right areas. The waitress was totally matter-of-fact about it. This rat is served in a soup with other ingredients. The waitress said the rat meat makes the soup very fragrant. Of that, there is little doubt.
Interesting story when I took this photo. The staff immediately freaked out and took the rats down from sight. A couple minutes later, the manager went over and chewed them out and made them put the rats back up. Apparently, they had thought I was a reporter out to make trouble for them. This wasn't long after the SARS panic when the government removed several species from animal markets. Clearly, there is an understanding that eating rat meat is pushing the food safety envelope.
OAH is right, monkey brains is also on the menu. Although I have never seen this myself (or I would have a photo of that too!), I have been told about this practice from people in the food science field. Just as portrayed in the Indiana Jones movie, it is considered a great delicacy. By the way, you think MacDonald's doesn't serve beef brains? Dream on.
And I get lectured every damn day about drinking cold Pepsi and Coke, cause that shit will kill you!

Monkey brains are available in various places in GD, but my cop friend told me that they are served only to repeated customers with ties to the owner or the managers of the resturant, because it is illegal to eat that now. After the SARS incident, a lot of these places that used to have monkey brains are no longer providing them.

Question:
I am negotiating with a girl who wants to leave the business, after having been in it for one month.
She has told me that she would be willing to come and live with me and have sex *once* per day for accommodation plus 2,500 RMB/ month.
This is my first time ever having tried this and I don't know what is the market price for a live-in girlfriend/ hooker.
Any of you who have done this: Can you give me an idea of how much this should cost and some potential complications with the relationship as well? One thing that makes me nervous is that she admits to not liking sex. Her skills are not good. I'm convinced that her services are not quite worth that much, considering that sex with me would last for no more than an hour per day. If she worked at a KTV (which she does), she would have to be there for at least 8 hours per day and talk to a bunch of drunken and groping customers-- which may be worse that one round of predictable sex every day. She says that most of them would rather just grope a girl than have sex with her.
I'll be working at a university and will introduce this girl to other people as a "fiancee." They've said that if I have a fiancee that I'll be able to bring her.

Go with your gut feeling. Assess whether she can fulfill all your needs as a GF, i.e.: emotional, cooking, house chores...and of course, sex.
For 2500 RMB per month, make sure whether this amount includes all her expenses. She may refer to this amount as not including her other living expenses, i.e.: mobile phone bills, shopping..etc.
In any case, if you decide to go for it, make sure she understands that this is purely a business transaction, which can be terminated by you if you so desire in future.
I've had my share of such offers and believe me, if the girl does not like you much, she is gonna be a blood sucker.

IMHO - it all depends on multiple factors:
1. Where - Are you at Shanghai/Beijing/Shenzhen - which is more expensive than Guangzhou, Donguan etc, which in turn is more expensive than other large cities in China which in turn is more expensive than rural areas/villages etc.
2. What 'class' of KTV is she working at - they range from 1-4-7, 2-5-8, 3-8-12, 5-10-15, 5-15-30 etc
3. How old is she? 18 to say 22 would be worth a bit more as over that age, they are already considered "too old" in China and would be just about ready for 'retirement from active duty"
4. Are you sure that she's going to be 'yours excluvely" - as these girls are very good 'stealing food" i.e. having somebody keep them and still out there hooking on the side.
5. Are you Chinese/Asian/Laowei?
6. How old are you/how do you look? Are you a 'marriage candidate" (introducing her as fiance??!! Now THAT would be a mistake!!!)
Jeez - just asking all these clarifications have had ME convinced that you should NOT go into this arrangement. China's full of nice young ladies and most of them are NOT hookers - so why don't you just go ahead and find yourself a nice eligible and decent girl. You would sooooo uncomplicate your life and then once a while you still go out and get yoruself a hooker - and find the oneS who do enjoy sex!!
Think 'bout it bud - you're going straight into sucker paradise.

Does 'once' mean she'll FL with others? Seriously speaking, I not sure how to respond to this situation. She wants to leave the business but still have you pay for sex, etc. Sounds like trouble...I prefer paying for it straight up. A hooker is a hooker, a girlfriend is a girlfriend, a wife is a wife....IMHO

1. I am in Tianjin discussing this with a girl from Heilongjiang. Together, we'd be moving to a medium sized city in Hunan province. She's willing to do it 4 days hence.
2. Not too sure. But overnight is 700RMB from there. The girls were OK looking.
3. She is 24.
4. Likely so. She wants to consider herself a "girlfriend," but doesn't like it when I use the word "xiao jie" to describe what she will be doing for me.

If the girl has to negotiate the number of times she is willing to have sex with you as a live-in GF, then you should not go into it.
If she wants to be your paid GF, then she should not peg the number of times she will have sex with you into the deal.
I gotta agree with David, this girl sounds like trouble,,,and I am sure that in a small city in Hunan you will have plenty of freebies with big tits.
You wrote: "One thing that makes me nervous is that she admits to not liking sex. Her skills are not good. I'm convinced that her services are not quite worth that much, considering that sex with me would last for no more than an hour per day. "
My very humble opinion:
Are you a bit masochist?
DON'T DO IT! . It sounds as you will face a lot of problems! I'll bet, she will not fulfil the rate of one hour sex daily, headaches aso. Will ask you for additional money for chinese food and shoping, you will have to pay for her mobile to be able to reach her at any time, you will be asked to pay the doctor for the old mother who will die whithout your intervention etc. I have made a similar experience with a lovely Thai girl when I was young and inexperienced, believe me hooker is hokker and they know all the ropes to get the much more money out of your pocket and this one seems to be particularly good.
BTW, I do not believe she was working for only one month. Have heard this story already everywhere, China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, UAE, Morocco etc.
You will not save money doing this way, if that is your concern for this strange deal!
So think about it before you present this possibly bad educated and bad beheavioured girl to your university friends and blame you for the during of your stay!
Kind regards!

Clandestine,
As they say in Thailand and other places, "You can take a girl out of a bar, BUT, you can't take the bar out of the girl". I've found this to apply in the vast, vast, majority of cases. Find yourself a normal girlfriend.
Just my POV.
OAH
Story in today's Shanghai Daily. January 6, page A6.
Restaurants are selling stolen cat meat as "lamb".
Reporters took twelve samples of "lamb" from different restaurants in Shanghai and had them tested. DNA tests proved that two of the samples were cat.
Anyway, if that "beef" was rat, it sure was nice.
But, of course, our favourite meat is pussy!
From the field to the packaging plant at a local street in Toysan, Guangdong.
Fellas, don't knock it until you tried it. Like a thumb up the anus at the moment of orgasm.... Ahhhhhhhh. Oh that's your anus not hers.

Looks like this girl will be nothing but trouble. Negotiating how many times of sex is a very bad sign. Add the others' comments... avoid like the plague.

Be careful! Do not buy any soft X, XXX DVD's then cross the border into or out of China. A friend of mine got caught and went thru a 3 hour ordeal with the Chinese custom police. Now he is waiting to know what fine they are going to impose on him. Anyone has a similar experience?

Can you tell us what border crossing (city) your friend went across? Was it at the airport, city, train station. Was your friend going IN or OUT of China. You didn't tell us which one. Do you know HOW MANY did your friend had?
A while back, I had a friendly debate with another monger about buying porn DVD/CD. We were debating and wondering what was the consequence, if any.
Thanks,

He bought ~30 DVD's. The incidence occured at the border of Hongkong/Shenzhen when he tried to get back to US.
I have been advise that in the border of Shenzen / Hongkong you can have problems with all kind of DVD's. Hong Kong people going back home have been fined for having even one not porn DVD not complying with the law.
I guess that depends on the day, the customs officer, the willing of the Chinese authorities, etc.
Keep safe

Why would you buy porn DVDs anyway? The ones in China are bad. The cover seldom matches the DVD. You can just BT D/L whatever you like.

If he was released and is back in the US, what's the problem? What do you mean by ordeal? Did they perform an internal cavity search or make him do naked squats? LOL! Or do you mean that they grilled him, scared the [CodeWord140] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord140) out the pussy and then made him put up a large amount of money for bail before releasing him. For some magical reason, the fine will end up being the same as the bail which he can kiss goodbye. In some cases it has been set at 1000 a disc.
So now tell me what is the difference in being caught transporting porn across customs Hong Kong / China and any other customs port in the West where you will be convicted of importing porn. If your friend had got the discs out of China and was caught in the US, wouldn't he have been arrested and tried in a criminal court there? Maybe you should be posting a warning on all the isg forums about transporting porn internationally.

There is a difference between porn and legalities. In the West we are more open to porn while in China they are not. In the West we are not tolerant to illegal DVD's while in China such law is not enforced. I do not wish to debate the difference and just ask if you guys know of similar cases. There is no need for lecturing. Save that for your children. Thanks.

I have heard this before about a foreigner being stopped at the Beijing airport with DVD's, not porn, just run of the mill DVD's. They had to pay some stupid fine, which most likely just lined the pockets of the customs guys.
Now, mind you, I have heard this story ONCE. No one I know personally has ever been stopped in the hundreds and probably thousands of exit/entries to China over the years.
Kill the chicken to scare the monkey is the proverb I think.
I can confirm that the fine from China to HK is $10,000 Hong Kong Dollars per DVD. This is mainly to protect the copy rights of mainly HK TVB programming which are reproduced illegally in China.
On the other hand, I have never seen a problem with someone exporting a cd bought in CHINA to another Foreign (read as Western) country.

A few months back there was a news article where the US and China governments broke a pirate DVD ring that was run by a US citizen (not ethnic Chinese) based in Shanghai selling DVDs to the US on the internet.

and if I remember correctly, the Americans that Bob Builder was talking about were prosecuted for running a biz with a Biz licence, not for any Piracy Issues.
Also they were only prosecuted becuase the American Police told the SH police about them and asked them to act on the case as the biz had gotten to a huge size , I think about 1-2 million dollars a year!

Was crossing the border early this morning thru Huangang - and here was this PRC "Duck" having a shouting and screaming match with his customer. Apparently, he was somehow not 'satisfied' with some kind of settlement and was hanging on to the old gal's home return permit/not allowing her to return to HKG until she settles up. Challenged the gal to make the fone call - "there's no way that you'll tell anybody you're with a duck"... and she proceeded to make the fone call loud and clear telling whoever is on the other line that her 'duck' is refusing to hand her home return permit back, and to get there ASAP.

I have a question about mail and shipping in China. I may be moving to Beijing in a couple of months and I'm debating wether or not to send myself some packages of books and things that would make my suitcases too heavy when I fly there.
Has anyone had any problems with packages that go "missing" or come missing some of their contents?
What about orders from places like Amazon.com? Can you get them safely?

Spooje – To answer you questions:
1)Things are not likely to go missing. In hundreds of shipment I have made I have never had that happen. Instead, things often get held up in customs and get charged duty upon entry.
2) Most online firms won’t ship to China. I don’t know about Amazon in particular
3) It is expensive to ship by air to China
I would advise shipping UPS but FEDEX and DHL are also OK. Carefully fill out all their paperwork including “Customs invoice”. The shipper can provide all the papers you need. Carefully value the shipment because anything over $500 will be taxed duty upon entry. Describe the items in very general terms i.e. book samples, etc. Make sure you have a accurate Chinese address to ship to and provide a local Chinese name and phone number for reference.
All that being said you should carry in as much as you can yourself in your luggage.
TD
Thanks a lot TravelDog. I guess I'll have to ship myself a box or two, I think that'll be cheaper than paying an overage charge to the airlines when I fly over.

Don't forget that a shipping on a "Slow boat to China" from the east coast of the U.S. can take more than 30 days. It's the cheapest route for shipping to China.
You might actually save $$ if you state that you're shipping books with the US postal service but I dont' know if that applies to overseas shipments.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060301/ts_nm/china_crime_dc_2"China may deport foreigners who buy or sell sex, steal or get involved in fights under new laws that come into effect on Wednesday, state newspapers reported.
Related clauses of the new law require karaoke clubs, discos and nightclubs, notorious fronts for prostitution and drugs in China, to install video-monitoring equipment and put windows in doors of private back rooms normally rented by the hour.
If they really enforce this, it will end the sex fun in China, I'll just stay in the more friendly Philippines.

I'm a relatively healthy young guy, no major illnesses or accidents (besides the stupid drunken ski incident in college) so I haven't given my health thought much thought in my life.
It's been interesting (maybe only to me) how lately, whether it's been anything at all, a cough, a slight fever, how the first thing I think about is whether I got it from a girl, which girl and whether it's something worst, alot worse than just a cold.
I'm almost over what was a really, really terrible period (was sick horribly for five days and spent a day in the hospital) and spent part of time playing out Tim Burton like fantasy sequencies on the various levels of tortured amusement my life would look like depending on what little bugger, probably sex related, it was. Paranoid might be too strong of a word but it certainly sat there like a frog on his favorite lilypad.
Of course, I was fine. It was just a very nasty ganmao bug. Still, while I'm not inclined to give up my hobby, at least until a serious relationship comes up, I'm gonna hate it if I become more and more of a hypochrondriac.
Anyone else's monger related health giving them more than just heartburn these days?

Just curious, after going on a freebie date with a very cute mamasan: what sort of penalty does she face if she is busted for pimping out girls? A fine? Expulsion from the city? Jail time? A bullet? I didn't want to spoil our dinner conversation by asking her that directly...
While we're at it, what does a girl get for being busted for prostitution?

Hmm, doing some googling after I posted that last note. If being a mamasan (offering girls in a bar, where the girls are not captive by you but you are a broker for) is the same as being a pimp, then I think China law allows the imposition of the death penalty. If the two are different, (to be a pimp your girls must be captive in some way) then maybe the death penalty doesn't apply.
I'm just curious if I'm dating someone who is on the hairy edge of getting a bullet... Given her heavy use of text messaging to conduct her business, it would seem to be easy for the Chinese government to catch her and have a record of evidence to convict.
Any China law legal eagles know for sure?

Negotiating with Chinese company to do a year of contract consulting work there. Any advice on games they play? What's typical guys?
Work would be in the Guangzhou area.
Most of my contracting experience has been in Europe and US with major US firms.
Don't want to leave anything on the table or get screwed in the process.
my only advice would be to try and make sure they have the cash to pay you.
Even if they have the cash it still doesn't mean that you can be sure about payments. Cash in advance is not uncommon in China and used in almost every business sector. Some western companies paid/lost considerable amounts for this learning curve.

If you have time post some of the scams they pull on the net!
I can't agree with Tiger1 - charging double on an assumption that you may get cheated is a losing way to run a business. I don't believe the question referred to JV's anyway - this is a contracting question.
My advise would be to get a local expert to go in with you, one that you have a business relationship with. I've been doing business since 97, and have yet to get burned. Having said that, I agree that JV's are lousy vehicles for businesses. Avoid like a hooker with a rash.

If the contract is for a time period (a year), then can't they just pay you a monthly salary?
If it is a lump sum amount for a certain scope of work, the it gets trickier.
It doesn't mean much if they "prove" they have the cash to pay you.
What they'll most likely do is just delay payment. And delay. And delay. And delay. You'd get excuses such as "The boss is on a business trip, so he can't sign off on the payment." or "We don't have the cash at the moment, we're waiting for payment from the client, or we're waiting for appropriation from the government, etc. etc." or "Our bank loan has been approved but it hasn't been released to us for use yet. We'll pay you as soon as that happens."
Their hope is that you'll eventually just get tired of it and give up or that the cost of continuing to pursue them is too much for it to be worth it to you (esp. if you have already left China).
My suggestions:
1. Take as much cash payment up front as you can.
2. For the remaining payments, stagger the payments throughout the term of the agreement based on milestones. No further payment, no further service.
3. It's best if you can find a way to get some leverage on them such that the cost to them of not paying is too high. (For example, for an installation project, just stop all work until payment is received. If they don't pay, they can't move in, they can't work, etc.) In your case, if it is just consulting, perhaps you can withhold some critical information until they pay.
4. There will of course be a final payment after all your work is finished. Try to set it up such that the amount of this final payment is an amount that you are willing to lose (e.g. the last 10% for example). Because after the work is all done, you will have no further leverage on them.
5. Document all work. For each piece of work you do, make them provide proof that they acknowledge that you have done the work to their satisfaction. This written acknowledgement must be stamped with their company stamp (in red ink). Individual signatures mean nothing in court, it's the stamp that matters. In a local court you wouldn't have a chance against them (unless you also have a local on your side), but the threat of going to court, especially if they know you have all your documentation in order, might make them at least pay part of the rest just to avoid the hassle.
Good luck.
Some good advice, guys.
Will be talking to them tonight and will see how this goes. I expecially like the idea of red stamping deliverables.
Since most of this is knowledge transfers deliverables will largely be on paper or oral.
Would think that their red stamp next to my embossed registration stamp would work well.
They are indicating that they will provide housing. Will see what that means, a tatami matt someplace won't cut it unless it comes with FS LT chica.

There's no tipping in China in the general sense that in the US we tip wait staff, bell persons, washroom attendants, etc. etc.

I agree with Moody.
Fortunately China is a country where tip is not expected.
So, you may forget to worry about it.
I remember first time I came to China, 15 years ago, and I tried to tip waiters or hotel staff, they refused horrified waving their hands to say no no. Then, I was told by friends that tipping was not allowed. True ? I don't know.
However, things have changed, and many bad habits have been imported, and now I am sure they would accept.

Gratuity is often added automatically to the bill at high end hotels. Likewise, the wait staff at five star hotels (the real ones) may require tipping as well, although this varies from hotel to hotel and even among personnel.

Thank you for your addition to my collection of Humurous questions
Dial the International access code whether it is 011 for the US The US international access code is 001.
Also, when calling from China, I use a code that saves me money (doesn't save much but you can get a couple more minutes out of a calling card). The code is 17951. Put in those numbers before the int'l. code.
So from China to US, I dial 17951 + 001 + areacode + number.

Nateron,
I think CL referred to calls from US, not to US.
Anyhow, when calling US, country code is 1 but exit code could be 00, which is common in majority of countries and in China too, but could be different.
A few examples: 001 in Thailand, 0011 in Australia, 810 in Russia.
This is reason in our mobiles we store all numbers with + in front of country code, instead of 00 or whichever else it is exit code in our home country. In this way exit code from the country we are in at that time is automatically dialled.
The US international access code is 001.
Also, when calling from China, I use a code that saves me money (doesn't save much but you can get a couple more minutes out of a calling card). The code is 17951. Put in those numbers before the int'l. code.
So from China to US, I dial 17951 + 001 + areacode + number.
The new law about buying the good stuff is now in action. Anyone heard of how the deal whit it? Is it buissenes as usual? Anyone actually got caught?
The US international access code is 001.

So from China to US, I dial 17951 + 001 + areacode + number.
17951 will only work on a cell phone. The saving is actually rather significant. Calls from a cell phone to USA/Canada was RMB 8.00/min. With 17951, it's only RMB 2.40/min.
You can use 17951 to make any international call, not just to USA. The pattern is:
17951 + 00 + Country Code + Area Code + Local Number
00 is the international access code from China. That is needed in any international call. 1, in the example our friend gave above, is the country code for USA (and the same for Canada).
If you are calling from a land line, try using 17909. The pattern is the same:
17909 + 00 + Country Code + Area Code + Local Number
However, 17909 doesn't work everywhere. As far as I know, it works in most of the major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc.
Both number (or IP Access Code as they called it) could also be used to call in-country long distance calls. For example, if you are calling a Shanghai number from Beijing, or vice versa. The pattern in that case is:
17951 or 17909 + City Code + Local Number
For example, Shanghai's city code is 021, Beijing 010, Guangzhou 020, etc.

So here's an interesting stumbling block I have reached.
I frequently travel from UK > China > UK
No problem choosing a gift from China for a friend (females) in UK, but what on earth can 1 take from UK to China as a thoughtful personal gift.
Excluding items which are not Made In China.
Not available as a fake.
Thoughtful.
You get my drift, I am totally lost and have 48 hours to do some shopping, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Girls in China loves little things like Pendants or Earrings, I always find that those gifts I bought from in-flights duty free sales a big hit because I seen them treasure it so much, wear it and seldom remove it. I also seen one of my freebie panic when one of her earring dropped in between the bottles at the bar counter and was deperately getting the bartender to recover it.
Some of these little in-flight duty free gift cost almost nothing and are not available in China shops. The better ones like crystals cost between US$20 - US$100.

Have to agree these girls love the stuff. Just a word of caution, if you buying gold be careful.
My friend bought his Chinese girlfriend a Thai gold bracelet, it was really nice and not cheap. When he gave it to her she said it was really nice, But the Wrong Colour !! Give me a break, if it was me I'd have taken it back.

The younger generation prefer "White Gold" (Not Platinum) or Silver (Even if they know it is less value than gold). It is not because of the value of the stuff you gave them, it is more of a fashion king of thing, something they can show off their friends or co-workers and in return get praises from them that "They are so fortunate to have a nice BF".
Also take note: In the Chinese culture there are some significant of what jewelry you give the girls as a gift, you do not want to give them something wrong and ended up been mis-understood of your intentions:
Earrings: OK gifts for older more mature girls (25 -30). Give something small for younger girls.
Pendant: One of my favourite; means you are giving something that is closest to their heart.
Necklace: Never give this! It is something you give to your Girlfriend signifying your acceptance of her as your GF and thus “chaining” her down for life!
Ring: Never give this unless you are going to marry her!
Bracelet: Depends on the girls, the older girls’ thinks that it is also something to “Tie” their arms up, while the younger girls do not think much.
Diamonds: I don’t think any mongers will give girl these but; also never give these as gifts! It is also a symbol of commitment to marrying her.
Of course some of the younger generations do not follow these thought anymore but I found the more remote the place they are from, the more they are into these “Old Fashion Thoughts”.

AGAG we are really fortunate to have all these little cultural insights from you, whether or not they really work will have to be tested. Im wondering to what extent cultural signals such as these are dilluted for us laowais. ie if we gave a girl one of these gifts and assuming she is the old fashioned type would she think about it with the same cultural meanings, or would it be completely lost due to our foreigness.
Anyway, very interesting to learn all these important little cultural things from you, have you considered writing a book, something like the Chinese Culture for Dummies (the mongering version anyway, too many business books out there). Someone should suggest your posting for ROD (i dont know how). But collectively many of the posts you have made constitute a very useful toolbox! :)

Thanks for the compliments.
I had lived in different parts of the world in my life and had learnt that the most difficult things to learn and accept is local culture that linls to local history. That is why I love to talk and observes local people on these in which I have no problems sharing. The fast you can understand the local culture the faster you can "blend" in to living among them.
If you known me since I was living in Japan and Philippines, I was posting stuff which I had learn about local culture and thoughts on ISG.
On the foreigner dillution part; you do not have to worry about that, because I had found that regardless of what race you are, as long as you are in that country, they would assume that you would know. As I had also mentioned sometime before in one f my previous post: "When in Rome, do what the Romans do."
However for China; they had came out from been very closed society to a developing super power; a lot of thing these younger generation they had seen on TV leads them to further misunderstand and dillute their culture thoughts already anyways. So whatever I had given you might not represent the thought of every youngsters, some of them do not even see the significants of the meaning of giving a Ring as a gift!
On the wirtting of a book, I did consider doing so since I am Semi-Retired. Book on mongering? nah... may be not... I would rather geared towards Cultural information with a bit of spices as chapter of mongering added to it.
Enjoy

Jewlery while it makes a great gift is I think a little over rated. In the past while I have found that girls I have talked to prefer things like perfume or make up from abroad that they can't get here. Also trinkets from your travels that make her seem special work as well. Watches also seem to be popular. One girl last month I brought back a pair of shoes and some nice under garments from Victoria Secret and she loved it.
AGs breakdown is absoulutley correct for buying nice jewlery but if you are buying casual jewlery in general just stay away from rings the rest is ok. It also depends on the profession for example massage girls in general won't wear bracelets or watches so don't buy them these gifts. A necklace with a simple pendant or casual wear earings like colorful and interesting studs younger girls like and are cheap in a mall back home. Like 6-9 bucks.
Basically to wrap it up anything they can't get here and can show off to their friends, they like.

In several threads there has been comments about fellow mongers who don't use rubbers. Here is a little story that may make you think twice:
An American tourist goes on a trip to China . While in China , he is very sexually promiscuous and does not use a condom all the time. A
weekafter arriving back home in the States, he wakes one morning to find his "tool" covered with bright green and purple freckles.
Horrified, he immediately goes to see a doctor. The doctor, never having seen anything like it, orders some tests and tells the man to return in two days.
The man returns a couple of days later and the doctor says "I've got bad news for you. You've contracted Mongolian VD. It's very rare and
almost unheard of here. We know very little about it". The man looks a little perplexed and says "Well, give me a shot or somethingand fix me up doc".
The doctor answers "I'm sorry, there's no known cure. We're going to have to amputate your "tool".
The man screams in horror "Absolutely not! I want a second opinion ".
The doctor replies "Well, it's your choice. Go ahead if you want but surgery is your only choice.
The next day, the man seeks out a Chinese doctor, figuring that he'll know more about the disease. The Chinese doctor examines his tool and
proclaims "Ah yes, Mongolian VD. Vely lare disease".
The guy says to the doctor "Yeah yeah, I already know that but what can we do? My American doctor wants to operate and amputate my tool?"
The Chinese doctor shakes his head and laughs "Stupid Amelican docta, always want to opelate. They make more money that way. No need
to opelate!"
Oh Thank God!" the man replies.
"Yes" says the Chinese doctor "You no worry! Wait two weeks. Dick fall off by itself! You save money"
you've been warned !

Hi fellow monger brothers,
In an annual leave and back to States, I met up with a Chinese girl studying in Boston (post graduate).
I invited her for a nice dinner ( costed me USD$400) and I sent her back to her drom. The next day she invited me over to her dorm and she prepared a lot of good Chinese food. We had a good time. I hinted that I wanted to stay there for a night on the sofa as It will be an hour's drive back to the hotel I stayed. She declined and say that I must go (loss of face and totally myself to blame)
I am back to shanghai now and trading email and telephone with her on a daily basis. She asked me if I am single and I answered positively and she shared with me that she broke up with her ex-boyfirend in China 5 months ago and that's part of the reason why she decided to come over to US.
What shall I do to win over her ? I am a lit bit lost. Half Chinese though (ABC from SFC)
I will appreciate all the good comments and advice.

It just strikes me as funny to be asking a group of horn dog men, who regularly cheat on their wives and girlfriends to have sex with prostitues, for advice on how to woo a woman's heart :)
My only advise would be to refrain from taking anybody's advise - only you can deliver an authentic and genuine course of action. Go with your heart, live like you are going to die tomorrow, dance like you actually know how - all those trite things.... :)

Therefore, I believe you only need to meet her one more time and I am sure you will clinch the deal.
That's all you have to do.

For example, Shanghai's city code is 021, Beijing 010, Guangzhou 020, etc.
snifferThanks very much Sniffer! I've just added the IP number to the front of the LT numbers in my phone and already I'm noticing the difference!

Story like this are common in China. You get on QQ and chat with those girls 90% of them; after short chat, found out you are a foreigner, they will ask whether you are single. If your answer is "YES, how about you?" the answer will be; "I had a boyfriend but we broke up X months ago."
My advice: Play by the ear, be very careful and listern and remember carefully on what she got to say. If she is telling the truth, the story will be consitant. If not, thing changes quickly as you question or get to know her more.
Good Luck!

The way to a woman's heart is through her anus. Grab yourself a tube of KY and ram it home.
She'll sense true love almost instinctively.
Or alternatively, write her a poem and send her some flowers.
I think both methods are equally effective.

I agree. There are lots of ISG members that are NOT married and have NO GF to play with. Because of the big difference in ratio between Chinese male and female, it is worst among Chinese males.

I'm trying to look up a residential name in Wenzhou, China. Does directory assistant (411) work in this country?
How would I go about calling 411 from my China Mobile cell or a landline in China?
Bill
In China the directory assistance number is 114, but you would have to dial the area code for the city (Wenzhou) before you dial 114 if you are not in the city. 114 is a local service only (thats why you need to dial the area code if not in the city) and it does not have lists of people, only companies, so you need to find some more details about the person you want to call first.
Although you may get lucky I don't think 114 will help you find a person,,,unless you know which company they work for or their friends company,,, Good Luck!
114 also has a webpage for some cities, google for the Wenzhou 114.
Hi Bill Lee,
Would like to add another point to Kunshan's post.
You can only find relevant info from 114 if the company name is registered/logged-in with 114 directory assistance. The operator can only help if so-and-so company info is in the database.
Good luck in your search!

If I am not wrong, it is possible to get the one year, multi entry visa in Shanghai itself. I believe you need a company's letter to support the application, having said that I am not sure does this apply to US passport too. I would suggest that you check it out at Visa application office where the office is now shifted to Pudong. It is the safest bet to get the most accurate information.

I read the article. The concern about death, impotence, and vision loss is merely derived from the warnings associated with the active ingredient sildenafil, which is also the active ingredient in Viagra.
The jist of the article is that by taking Santi, you are merely taking Viagra, and all the Viagra warnings apply (don't take it if you are taking blood pressure medicine or have other heart conditions - consult a doctor before using).
And like Viagra, if your erection lasts more than 4 hours, go out and screw someone QUICK! :-)

SZexpat said he had some kind of allergic reaction to some Santi pills. So the problem is, you don't really know what else might be in them.
I don't think any Chinese manufacturer gives a shit if you get complications or die. Do you really think they have any safety tests in China?
SZexpat said he had some kind of allergic reaction to some Santi pills. So the problem is, you don't really know what else might be in them.
SZexpat can comment on his own post, but I followed his advise about avoiding ones that looked fake. I don't think we know for sure because the ones I ran into looked awefully authentic (but only had the hologram rather than the serial numbers). I ended up buying some with the serial numbers. These, in my own experience, did not give me a reaction, but also worked slightly less well than vitamin V.
SZE described a reaction to the possibly fake ones, but not the possibly real ones. Who knows!! :)
Santa seem very sophisticated on these matters, so I 'll only mention the obvious that everyone will have a different reaction to the real, fake, V, anything and you'll just have to take your own chances (haha, I'm not a lawyer). Anyway, hope everyone is having a grand old time in China while I dream of the next time I'm in town. Cheers

Sorry if these posts don't really fit here, theres no Jokes & Humor Section in the China forums, but there certainly should be. I found this stuff in a shop here in Shenzhen, it looks almost like Nescafe instant coffee mix (notice coffee is misspelled) which is supposed to contain some form of a Spanish Fly. I am not a Scientist, but I didn't think there was such a thing! I was under the impression the only true Spanish Fly is cold hard cash. Anyway, I bought it as a joke, but might try it on an unsuspecting hottie sometime.

On picture 1482 there seems to be a web address. Can this coffee be bought online? Instant Excitement sounds good! What is the guy saying in the pic? You can see what the girl has on her mind!
Thanks for the pics.

AGFirst AG , are you a Chinese man? If so , I will assume that you know and understand Chinese culture. I met a woman in China about 1 year ago. First trip to China I spent 10 days with her (NO SEX). Second trip , 5 months later , I spent 1 month with her and lived at her house. Sex was a 3 and many , I love you's. I am looking for a wife in her and sex is not number 1 with me. Trust and honesty and LOVE is more important.
This is my problem, 2 weeks before my second trip to China she received a 6000 RMB Diamond necklace from her GF. I know her GF is poor. I JUST DON'T BELEIVE HER. What do you think? Am I stupid and should I try to forgive and forget? I do love her , BUT , I think that I can never TRUST her. I have not been 100% loyal to her back here in the USA. I have had 1 or 2 one night stands , but , I think she could be an ernai (second wife ) to a Chinese man.
I love her and her daughter and if your a Chinese man , you know that chinese men have a problem accepting a divorced woman with a young child. I feel like I am being used , I do send her money. Please give me your opinion.
Xie xie , thank you

I don't think it takes a Chinese man to tell you that you are being used, from what you've said it sounds like you are in my opinion. The fact that she has that neclace tells you you aren't the only one giving her money. The fact that you feel you are being used probably means you are! But lets see what the Chinese man's opinion is.

First of all... I am an ABC that been living in Asia for the pass 20 years and now I lived in Shanghai since 2004.
I am not sure what you are saying here: "2 weeks before my second trip to China she received a 6000 RMB Diamond necklace from her GF. I know her GF is poor." You meant she received it from her BF right?
OK, my advice: Stop sending her money! You should had in the first place!
If you go to CP (Read the Donguang threads) you will know that it is very often girls that are Ernai have a few "husbands". So you could be one of the few of her "Husbands". Get the picture?
Moreover.... if you are feeling that you cannot believe or trust her now, how would you expect to do that in future? Drop her and move on!
Good Luck from "Dear. Mr. Chineseman"

First, I think he is saying that his girl is using her girlfriend as an excuse stating that the nechlace came from her but he knows the GF is poor so this is not possible.
I am also an ABC and have met AG in CP. Listen to him, he does know what he is talking about.
Also you must know by now that there are just so many nice girls (ladies) in China that is dying to meet a nice gentleman for marriage. Most of the Chinese guys are not educated, have a poor paying job, lazy, drink, gamble and treat their ladies very badly so you will have no problem finding a good lady for you. In Fact, I think you would have to beat them off with a stick if you spend any kind of time in China however the catch is that you have to spend time in China.
I met a very pretty lady in China a few years ago. I first did not want to date her because she looked so young but her ID showed that she was 30 years old. She is single, never been married. Has her own dress shop and makes a good living. She get head turns from all the guys everywhere she goes. So my question to her was why a great catch like her is still single. Her answer was that a lot of guys are after her but she is very picky. Her standard is very high so I asked her what they are. She said that the man that she is looking for should not over drink, smoke, gamble, has a steady job and do not hit women. I told her that it is very simple to find which she just smiles and said not in China. Talking to some of my Taiwan friends, I found that while these conditions are nothing in the U.S., in China or Taiwan, they are indeed very difficult to meet for a lot of Chinese.
Just want you to know that you can take your time and there are a lot of great girls out there looking for Mr. Right.

BillI don't know the law regulations for purchasing an apartment especially for foreigners. Anyway I would not do it, because of the really bad construction quality of most buildings. They look really good from far away and when being new, but after few years problems are appearing.
I suggest to rent an apartment for let's say one year. After this time you can continue or move over to a new place.
Renting depends on your requirements, like location, size, condition, with/without furniture and so on. During the time you are not living in the apartment you maybe can rent the apartment to other people in need for a short time stay and an apartment. This service also can be offered as served apartment with daily cleaning service. This also is possible when living there to get the comfort of hotel service.
Drop an email with your demands/expectations/time(frame) and I will check the situation in CP.
I take the liberty to post some of my thoughts about your "love" and your intention to buy/rent an apartment in CP when there is a link between these two things:
Do you really think that she will stay in this apartment when you are not in CP? Do you really think that she is in need of an apartment? Bill, you met her in CP because she is in need of money!
I did this with my first chinese love in NE CN. Rented an apartment for one year, hoped she will stay there to get a chance for a better life, but she always moved back to the family home on the countryside without taped water and a "shit"-hole next to the donkey in the garden after I went back to my home country. At the end she decided to give back the apartment to get some money and I could not do anything against it from far away.
Of course it would be Christmas/Eastern/Birthday at the same time for her when you decide to marry her, but I hope you know that you will not marry her only. You will marry her whole family and so also family problems. Don't expect that she will leave her family and stay with you, move to the place you live now. Maybe she will do, when she is able to communicate in English, but then you still have to support their family...and she will request/demand it.
Renting an apartment, because of long stays in CP just for the biz you did before you met her - Fun! - is a solution. Thinking that your love will stay there maybe the wrong thinking and not the way it is done here in China and by people like such "working girls".
Anyway, follow your "inner voice" and do what this voice is telling you. When you don't do it, you maybe will think about it for the remaining time of your life.

I bought an apartment in Dong Guan, Chang An three years ago. It hasn't fallen down yet. I rented for a year and I agree that renting a while is a good idea.
Here's my understanding, but in China the rules change as you go along so I can't guarantee accuracy.
A foreigner in DG can buy an apartment in a newly finished or nearly finished building.
You must put 70% down and can't sell for a few years without paying a penalty tax. ( to prevent speculation).
The developer usually has an arrangement with one or two local banks.
You now need a residence card to buy. At least this was the experience of a friend who just bought a house here.
Things will difficult to impossible if you don't have a Chinese name.
I think if you are going to live in China an apartment is a good value. If you want to buy it as an investment I'm not so sure. There are so many wierd deals and new projects going up.
TD
so you saw through my real intention. ha. the young sweet thing that she's it, seducing an old man like me. damn, i'm lucky. i'll never have that kind of scam in america. i might get scammed from a 30 or 40 years here in the states but not a 20 year. life is good in china.
turns out that working online while in china was not so perfect because of the internet downtime in the earthquake near taiwan. but i have put some thought in staying in cp. previously i always wanted to buy an apartment in panyu (py) but now that cp offers more, not only in girls, but in the comrade-feeling i gotten through hanging out with the boys (or some of us, dirty old men). and damn it, when i'm reading all these fucking posts of yous (yes. it's a real word, at least in new york) after i left, i felt so left out of the action. only two days ago, i and another member went roaming through new york chinatown's massage ads, only to be disappointed with the lack to youthfulness in the merchandise on display.
cp also offers lower price property than py so that's why i asked about cp. so it wasn't all about this one girl, who btw, was one of the worst service girls i had. but sometimes, it's not about the service but rather the attitude. (holy fuck, am i on match.com or a sex board?). where and when did i lose my sanity? thanks guys, now that you straighten me out. so i'm going to buy a hotel instead and stock it with the best of the best. then put a red rope out on the door and wait for the mongers to come. you know the saying, if you built it, they'll cum. only isg members will be allowed.
how inconsiderate of you people to think that i would try to win a girl's heart through material things (only if it still works).
but you people did not think that perhaps it's my evil plan to seduce a young girl with material things and use her for several months before moving on to the next one. ha!
btw, acey, when did bill become your billy?
still bill, not rapebill, not fuckrapebill nor billy,
traveldog, thanks. at least you took me seriously.

Bill,
AG pointed out your squeeze to me in the BBS yesterday. She is a cutie, but not the same one Santa pointed out the last time. Having said that, if I've said it once, I've said it 100 times:
"You can take a girl out of a BBS, but you cannot take the BBS out of a girl."
I cannot tell from your post if you are serious about this girl or not. Sometimes, I've seen you get mushy, mushy over girls, but eventually you get over it. I hope this is the case with this one as well, my friend.

P.S. PM Transporter. He knows all about Real Estate in CP.
I think Santa has seen her more than once and longer.
Anyway, I know my place with these girls. I'm not going to lose my sanity or money over them. I know when and where to draw the line. So let this dirty old man have his fun.
Why can't I have an evil plan too?

If you are not chinese you can not buy there. I was told if you have a company in China that your company can but it in the company name.
It was very simple for me to buy a apartment in China, but I couldn't get a loan as the banks in this small city don't have much expereince (none) about lending to Laowai.
1. Find the house (either new or second hand). this is the hardest step!!
2. deal with the property developers sale office for a new place, or the agent for a secondhand place
3. negotiate all costs (decide who pays taxes and fees and comissions)
4. pay the money or get a loan
5. house is yours.
6. papers (title deeds and land use papers) are put in your name and put in your hands if you paid up 100% or kept at the bank if you took a loan. There are various fees involved with this step, each city taxes differently and the agents % is also different (can be negotiated).
There is a new law that says foreingers can only buy one apartment in the city where they work, but this was effected after I bought my place so I don't know what you have to do to prove you work in the city. I am sure the real estate agent or developers sales office could help you on that one.
Can some of yous who are foreigners, input your past experiences in buying an apartment or house in China?
BillAs far as valid regulations are concerned, don't search further than yesterday. Go to an agent and ask, but make sure to ask again the next day. I am happy that I sold what I owned in China.

If you are not chinese you can not buy there. I was told if you have a company in China that your company can but it in the company name.I don't think so. And really if so, just buy via a shelf company. Maybe you can even use a HK shelf company.
But under NO circumstances buy in the name of your GF. You will lose both in no time!
Can some of yous who are foreigners, input your past experiences in buying an apartment or house in China?
BillBill,
I highly recommend not to buy any property in CN. The laws and "rules" here changes faster than the wind. Furthermore you don't know if you will stay here for a long time in advance. Maybe you will realize that your "Love" is not anymore and your heart is broken like a cookie when falling down from the table. You maybe will meet another girl and a "new love" feeling will approach your heart.
Then, what will happen when you are not satisfied by time or you will realize that the construction quality in CN is sometimes not a penny worth?
Rent, just rent an apartment and you have at least the freedom to leave without a big financial damage.
I suggest you stay a while in a hotel, select your apartment yourself and then move over. I stayed one month in the hotel before I found I want. I am sure we can negotiate a good deal when you stay at least two weeks in a hotel. Maybe we can get a more better deal when you stay one month and reduce your requirements, like everyday breakfast for two, everyday new linen and so on.
As longer you stay here you will get to know good locations with good service and you then can buy, but I never would buy any property here in CN. Getting married with property is accepted. :D
m2c
LW
PS: When you are in CN for a while you maybe will see what es going on here and maybe agree with me. Of course this all depends on own experiences.
who can prove that he was born in HK and can get a HK ID would have easier time buying any property in China?
Laowai would just more steps to go through?
Of course, property should never be under girlfriend's name. Otherwise, how can you kick her out and put the next one in?
I'm aiming to buy an apartment within the next one or two years.
(step 1 of evil doer plan).
Bill
Hi Bill, I also put in my vote on not buying a place in China. The law changes all the time plus the apartment are not appreciating all that fast. With the rent being so cheap, it would be best to rent. Then if the place gets too loud, bad neighbor or any of the lots of problems that can occur, you are free to just move to another place. This would also allow you to move to another part of the country if you so desire. Renting would give you a lot more flexibility that owning would not allow. Just my 2 cents.
I can't even get a love nest going here. OK. I rent my love nest then.
Any suggestion in CP?

If you buy a house here and one day you dont like it anymore be prepared that it may take several years too sell.
Usually chinese dont buy 2nd hand house. They buy new ones and borrow huge amounts of money from the bank paying back month by month.
House here has a price - but no market. ;)

House here has a price - but no market. ;)I second that. It took me over a year to sell a 240 sqm place that I bought in 2001 in Shanghai (Right after foreigners were allowed to wholly own). Finally I managed, and at very nice profit too. But I doubt that looking at today's prices a repeat would have a chance.

One of my local girl asked me if my apartment is bought or rented. I answered rented, she had a really bad facing then and said "bu shu fu". Her service was "bu shu fu" too and I said "bu guo ye", bye bye. :D
Welcome to China and it's social cultures.

one important factor for me when traveling through china is the internet connection and speed.
for those that are living in china and especially in cp, what is the typical upload and download speed you are getting?
two sites (in the u.s., which is where i need to get into when i am in china) that provide speed tests are:
http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=497&category=46&nav=102
http://us.slingmedia.com/page/speedtest.html
interestingly, i get two different reading from the two sites within minutes of each other. but it does give me a general idea of the speed.
can you test your speed and tell me what they are?
i have tested the miraton's connection and it's 541kbps upload and 366 download. one other day, it was in the 700's.
also, how does one get a local home internet service account in cp? are there different speed available and how much monthly rmb is the fastest speed? i take it that it's all through dsl and not cable modem? of course that may depend on what your apartment building has to offer?
are local home internet accounts have more blocking restrictions going to sites out of the country?

i can give you feedback from zmt, just around the corner of cp:
- down: 55-75 kbps
- up: 314-353 kbps
- time of test: 2007/02/01, 23:01 beijing time
compared with your figures at miraton maybe slow, but i am very happy, really no complains. are your data for sure?
speed depends on time when you are online and location the server with the requested data is. in the evening between 5/6pm - 9/10pm the speed sometimes is lower than during daytime, because whole china is sitting in front of computers in internet shops. then voip, like skype, has some problems to deliver good quality.
basically, i really can not complain. maybe in cp or other places in china you can get better results.
i paid cny1,800 for one year no limit adsl internet connection - china telecom. from time to time there are promotions and you get a good deal.
yes, some sites are blocked, like bbc, wikipedia, but you can access them by using a proxy server, as i do from time to time when i want to connect to this websites.
in internet shops and hotels the chance that there are more sites blocked is higher, especially in internet shops. santa can tell you some stories when he tried to connect to isg in zmt and cp. i can access isg in my apartment without any problems, if this is very important for you. ;)
in general i don't have a problem connecting to web sites i need in my apartment, but when you are more in xxx-websites, then maybe you will have some problems, but when you live in cp, you don't need this as you can walk out, turn around the corner and mamas will greet you.
adsl or cablemodem depends on apartment, i saw both here in china.
summary, i would not worry about internet connection.
lw
ps: you sound, that you maybe will come earlier than in six month. come on, you already bought a (oneway) ticket, isn't it so? ;)
thanks for the info. just looking for more reasons to come back and stay longer.
if i can get more input from those others out there on their home internet experience in china, i would really appreciate it.
maybe after april, 2-way ticket with over 30 day stay. this time, no more going to gz, straight into cp and stay there for good.

Hello,
Can anyone suggest a flower shop in the BAOAN, near NANSHAN in Shenzhen with phone number. This might be too specific of an area and the reason I didn't get any replies in Shenzhen Thread. Therefore I deleted the post and posting the questiion in a more general place, Living in China.
If nothing in Shenzhen, then any suggestion for a WEBSITE other than FTD.com for China for sending flower? I did some research at wwwFTD.com. It's $149.99 plus USD sending 12 roses, expensive. I'm asuming people in China celebrate Valentine's Day. Nevertheless, It will be nice to send something during this time.
Thanks.......
Hi Weelock,
You might give the following a try:
www.szflowers.com - (They have a shop in Guo Mao, Luo Hu District, not far from the Metro station)
www.szhua.com
www.cnflower.net
www.flowercity.com.cn
Hope that helps you.

Hello Pacific Blue,
Thanks for all the links. Unfortunately, I have a very limited knowledge of Chinese. I did a web search and found http://www.chinaflower.com.cn/. This website is in English. Hope nothing is wrong/bad about this site. It is a sponsored link from www.google. Therefore it should be alright. Prices seems reasonable, like twelve roses for 24.99USD. I chat with someone online and they deliver to most large cities in China including Shenzhen. All places ( websites ) will call some place local and they will deliver it. It called wired out or outsource. FTD does this. It is better to call a local store to cut out the middle man like FTD.
Thank again,
Weelock

Weelock,
you may want to try http://www.fleurop.com
Prices seem similar to what you saw on FTD but at least you have an alternative.
From the SH board, but worth to be reminded of:
Other members on the board is right. Why pay? With your looks and language.....
There are very valid reasons to pay. A "freeby" may stick to you more then you can handle. Specially single girls can be a great risk und should be approached with greatest caution.
At least, make sure she never finds out your work location, real name, home address. If she wants to get back at you, she will use it.
So leave your name cards at home and get a 2nd SIM card for your phone.
But otherwise be honest, tell then you are married (or whatever) and that you just like sex once in a while with somebody else.
I am on the freeby ride currently (thanks to QQ) and prefer married girls, they are more into working out their unfilled sexual fantasies rather then looking for a new lifetime companion. And the sex is great too!
So just take care, a girl in love is like a tiger in rage, fully unpredictable, and extremely nasty when hurt.
I'm planning a trip to Jilin province in the September time frame. Can someone tell me if it is possible to purchase good quality color slide film there and if it is possible to get it processed and mounted?
Thanks

OK, a bit different. I'm ~188 cm tall, and 135 kg. Have a 145cm diameter chest and a 111cm diameter waist. Built like a football player.
So where does one find clothes for guys like me in Shanghai? Is it possible, or am I doomed to the tailor?

Sing this song from the Seven Dwarves from Disney, as they head for the mine to work.
High ho.
High ho.
It's off to the tailor we go.
LOL! Sorry just had to poke fun at someone with the same problem. As for myself, I’m 202cm, 143kg and work out religiously as a "want-a-be" body-builder. In short. WE ARE BOTH DOOMED!
IMHO, we are both "screwed!" In the five years of travel and work in China, Thailand and Japan, buying off the rack isn't going to happen. There are some big and tall manufacturers in Indonesia and S. Korea who subcontract for the Big and Tall outlets in the US. Unfortunately, you have to know someone inside to get apparel.
However, there is a silver lining to our problem;
1. The chances of us getting mugged in China come into the scale of us being attacked by a shark, on land, between the hours of 2300 to 2400 hours when we are in China.
2. Tailored clothes look good on us, when they are done right.
Perhaps someone else has an opinion. I have been in Shanghai with the same idea as you. I didn’t find any shops over the course of 2 weeks I was there.

Great, thanks for the feedback! It's difficult even in the US sometimes, just thought I might get lucky in the most cosmopolitan city in China.
I have noticed that many of my Chinese friends and contacts say "we don't normally go into this district at night, but you are with us so we can go". I guess being the size of 3 typical Chinese men my have something to do with it?
Xin nian kuai le!

So where does one find clothes for guys like me in Shanghai? Is it possible, or am I doomed to the tailor? You don't really have to be built like a football player to not fit the Chinese size chart. The Chinese taylors, and Shanghai has the best of them, are usually hit and miss when it comes to suits and shirts as they really don't have any sense of current trend. You have to tell them everything and better, bring your favorite suit and they will duplicate it for U. Cost is about half as much as it is in HK.
I had some shirts made when I was in HK last month at a tailor shop in Central. The name of the shop escapes me now but it is in sort of the mezzanine level of this office building called Worldwide Plaza. It is a tiny place, like all the other shops there, and it is on the second level. The cost is $300HK per shirt and you get to choose every detail of the shirt. Turnaround is 3 days. I was given a binder as sick as the NYC yellow page to choose from for the material for my white cotton shirt. Yes, there are that many white cotton cloth, all with different thickness, weave and feel. They do charge extra for thicker seashell buttons. And "we don't use plastic buttons". I thought all buttons were made of plastic. They will keep your file forever and can mail stuff to you anywhere in the world for future orders. The cost of a suit is $5000HK and above. Very good work with lots of attention to details. I will go back in a heart beat. And I will look for the card I took and post the address in case anyone wants to know more.
BTW, the place is actually filled with shops catering to the Filipinas. I was surprised to make eye contact with a quite attractive one on my way out. But I didn't have time to linger around. On weekends, it could be quite a place to hunt.
The address of the tailor shop mentioned in my earlier post is:
Jantzen Tailor
Shop 256, 2nd Floor, World Wide House
19 Des Voeux Road
Central
Hong Kong
Tel: (852) 2570-5901
They do speak English and take all major credit cards.
I had this lady recommended to me. Shes will take you down to the market and buy the fabric for you at her local rate which is obviously alot cheaper than any of us will pay. I got a cashmere suit for 600rmb and a long cashmere trench coat for 800. But here is the problem....i brought her a Dior Homme suit i bought a few weeks earlier in NY for her to measure and copy and she still cant get it right. Like many of you guys have mentioned they just can't get the euro fit down right. I had to pay more to get it altered in the states than i paid for the suit in Shanghai.
But anyways her contacts and negotiating skills might be useful to some:

Hi Rob
Did you maybe type the wrong word in ? I've never heard of, nor could I ever imagine, getting a suit made from cashmere. Cashmere isn't at all durable, that's why the best suits in the world are made exclusively from wool. Wool wears well, cleans well, and travels well. Cashmere would be for a shirt or sweater. Same holds true for a trenchcoat. If I went to Savile Road tailor in England and asked for a cashmere suit I'd get laughed out of the store.
My disclaimer here is I am a single man slightly colorblind (dark blue - black) who has no fashoin sense, so maybe I am just out of touch with today's fashions :) But I will say this - if I am wearing a suit that costs 77 US dollars, I feel like I am wearing a suit that costs 77 US dollars. For me at least, I will always pay top dollar for the finest fabrics and tailors on earth. It just somehow makes me feel more confident. I've gotten superb suits made in Hong Kong - 3 fittings - for around 5000 HK that are no different that Savile Road suits that would cost me 2000 US. (the tailors have always been Shanghairen)
Lao Ma
I know i am getting way off track here on ISG but actually the best material for suits that the normal man can afford is cashmere. I have a little bit of experience in having custom suits made. I have a really good place in Brooklyn that i buy fabric that is considered a steal....Super 120s Wool @ 50/yard, Super 150 wool at 80/yard and 180s at 120+/yard. Cashmere starts at around 200/ yard. A 6 foot guy needs about 3 3/4 to 4 yards so to buy fabric so cheaply anywhere is a steal.
I definately do not feel as if I am wearing a $77 suit. Most Dior suits off the rack are Super 150s and cost 2 grand, if Dior made a suit of with the fabric that I bought then the price skyrockets from there. I would recommend making a suit from cashmere, you'll never wear wool again, unless of course its freezing. Now her tailoring......i cant defend her on that. Really bad work

Lao Ma,
I understand that many of the suits you get in Hong Kong are actually made by tailors in Shenzhen. I buy my suits in Bangkok at about 1/3 the cost of Hong Kong depending on the material. I am happy with them for the most part.
BTW, Cashmere makes very nice sport coats and overcoats.
Just my POV.

For those who are interested still on this topic:
The best place to get tailor made suits, shirts, etc, in Shanghai is the Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market. (Fabric Market for short). There are three full floors of at least 50 shops each. Selling clothing materials, ready made jackets, ties, anything that you wear (even underwear but except condoms!) You can get a good bargain there. I was there just today with member “Passinthrough”. He walks in with 3900 RMB (Approx US$490) and came out with order of tailor made:
1) Overall Jacket (Cashmere) = 1000RMB
2) One set of Tuxedo (Suit and Pants) = 900 RMB
3) 4 shirts (2 X Tuxedo style, 2 X normal shirts) = 500 RMB
4) One waist length Leather Jacket (real leather) = 1200 RMB
5) 5 X Wool Scarves = 300RMB
All of them will be ready for collection in 3 days. Of course, if workmanship is not so important, you can shop around for other shops that will give you even lower prices for these. 80% of the shopper there are foreigners.
Address:
Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market
No. 399 Lu Jia Bang Road, South Bund, Shanghai
The older market which is slightly nearer to The Bund had been worn down.

By the way: Lao Ma, sorry I have to correct you: Cashmere wool is often used to make winter jackets especially the over coats. I have a few of the coats made from cashmere and they are very durable.

AG... overall great prices... i will be up in SHA in late aprl early may , i will definitely go by and check it out. i have not purchase a shirt from US dept stores for over fifteen years. Started with a tailor in Hong Kong -TST and then to the tailor at the Cesar Hotel in Taipei (Hansen). I could use a good tailor in China especially Shanghai tailor well known for their great work. the guy in Hong Kong is a Shanghainese tailor...

You really think you get Cashmere? Of course not. Cashmere is perfect for cheating, you need a labtest to make sure what it is. Silk (in most case polyester, sometimes viscose) it's a little easier to test. Most of the materials they use are cheap fakes. Workmanships vary a lot too. But it's cheap.

Hey Guys,
I have a serious question for anyone to answer out there.
How do you persuade a livein maid to provide sexual favors?
I'm a business English teacher, 43 years old and I own my apartment in Shenyang.
I hired a new Chinese livein maid about a week ago.
This woman cleans my whole apartment, cooks for me all three meals and does the laundry.
She is a woman who is about 48 to 50 years old but she looks very good for her age. Her name is Mei.
She has lovely long auburn hair which she keeps in a ponytail, great looking tits which are big for a Chinese woman her size and her ass is about regular looking as it goes for the Chinese women.
She is always smiling and in a very good mood all the time.
Last night I got up around 1:00 am in the morning to go to the bathroom.
I was sleepy so I didnot realize that the light was on in the bathroom so I opened the door immediately and there on the toilet sat Mei with her long johns down to her ankles. She was startled and she made a slight noise from the surprise. I just stood there looking at her for a moment not thinking what I was doing then she just smiled. I was so embarrassed that I quickly shut the door and went back to my room to wait till she was finished.
She quickly went back to her room when she was finished.
Today she smiled and talked to me as if nothing happened.
Mei turns me on for some reason so is why I would like to try and get her to be my sleeping companion. I was thinking of approaching her and telling her my attentions and that I would pay her an additional rewarding increase in salary per month. She makes 800 RMB a month.
Well, tell me what you guys think I should do! I just love to get laid by young and older women all the time.

This may not be all that helpful since you are already in the situation, but it is probably easier to get a hooker and convince her to be your live in maid than to get a live in maid and convince her to be a hooker.
What I would recommend is not offering her any additional money: for a woman her age you are already paying enough and she may even just be happy for the attention. Just ask her to bring you a towel while you are in the shower, walk around naked tell her you can't find your pants, ask her to give you a massage, or have a drink with you after dinner then start hitting on her.
She will either accept or feel so uncomfortable that she has to leave. Then you can start "interviewing" regular working girls until you find a nice one then ask her to be your live in maid.
But offering more money is a really bad idea. It is unlikely Chinese will respect you for bonking your aged maid, but they will respect you even less if you throw good money after bad.
Seriously, though, you can do better in China and if you have a live in maid/fuck buddy you won't be able to bring the young pontang back home.
I would hesitate to fuck her even for free... after you pork her a few times you are going to realize how old she is.
Good luck in your social engineering project,
CJW

Tonyxxx001,
Bonking the maid is OK idea.
Paying more is a bad idea.
Paying more is not needed and you want to keep your options open.
Better instead to buy her a gift if you get a good bonk out of it. This keeps your options open for bringing younger women back to your place. (The maid will understand your needs).
Good luck,
TK

If you do bonk the "old maid" be sure to bring two bags, one for her, one for you in case hers falls off!
Since I don't fuck the elderly all that often (tehy don't frequent the bars I do) do this for me: put both hands in her pussy and clap.

That will be risky. It's better to take a coat that fits well and have it copied. Some for what you need.
Cashmere can be in all sort of colors. But again, it's unlikely you will find real Cashmere in those places.

Solid advice Crazy Jim, Tony - just make sure she can bloody cook or you will end up regretting it.

Yes, Yes and Yes again - excellent advice. Sounds like you already have a little chemistry going as it is... Turn up the charm, create some opportunities and add alcohol - shit tell her its your Birthday if you need to. Don't try and buy her though unless you decide you absolutely *MUST* see whats under the hood and *ALL* else fails. But like Crazy says she may just be happy for the attention!
Seriously, though, you can do better in China and if you have a live in maid/fuck buddy you won't be able to bring the young pontang back home. This is really important Tony, you need to decide if this fetish of yours is worth the limitations it may impose on the rest of your lovelife.
I would hesitate to fuck her even for free... after you pork her a few times you are going to realize how old she is.Awwww cummon Crazy Jim, just how 'Cazy' is yah? Couldn't even tempt you if she took out her false teeth and gave you a first rate gumjob? :)

Daynight:
Alot of time it is wool/cashmere blend. 100% cashmere is very, very expensive. I just bought a 100% cashmere sport coat off the rack in Italy and I had to pay 450 Euro for it. The 80/20 wool blends were only 150 Euro. All cashmere overcoats were over a grand. I buy the EROS cashmere sweaters in China and they go for over 1,000 RMB which is still cheap compared to Europe or N. America. I have never bought made to made to measure suits, jackets or coats in Bangkok or Hong Kong, but have seen the material in the shops.
OAH
You really think you get Cashmere? Of course not. Cashmere is perfect for cheating, you need a labtest to make sure what it is. Silk (in most case polyester, sometimes viscose) it's a little easier to test. Most of the materials they use are cheap fakes. Workmanships vary a lot too. But it's cheap.

What the hell, you only live once. Put a hole in one of the paper bags.
I guess she could also leave the longjohns on then for some kinky trapdoor sex.

How do you persuade a livein maid to provide sexual favors?
I'm a business English teacher, 43 years old and I own my apartment in Shenyang.
Shenyang -- brrr. Sounds cold. Other than that, your situation sounds intriguing.
I'm also a 43yo laowai who has taught English on and off. Considering your description of the situation and the woman, her smiling at you even in the embarrassing situation, etc., I would move forward.
What I would NOT do is take her out, open a bottle of wine, light candles, bring her a gift, offer her more money, and especially not have a discussion with her about sex/relationship. There is no need to lay any groundwork. She already knows how comfortable she feels with you. Also, considering her age, there is no need to "compensate" her in any way. A woman her age is likely affection-starved, and you probably would be doing her a bigger favor than she would be doing you. Everyone has needs, and once these Chinese women get into their 30's or so, they get past the notion that they need to get something for it.
Here's what I'd suggest. One day, when it's after dark and she's washing dishes, chat casually with her about something usual, like groceries. Move closer to her, without looking suspicious, and then while you are talking, start touching lightly up and down her back, and/or play with her hair. Do this without any break in your talking about groceries, as if nothing unusual is happening. If there is no resistance, continue the conversation, while also gradually touching more areas of her body. If this keeps up for several minutes, do more, like start making out with her right there and/or move her to the bed. Better use her bed, not yours, so that she doesn't think your bed is her territory. This may be important if you continue bringing girls to your apartment.
I'd say there's better than a 50% chance that there will be some resistance, even if she wants to do it. If she just moves your hand away, but stays there and keeps washing dishes, continue the conversation and try again a few minutes later. If she verbally declines, you may need to wait a few days before trying again (could be her period, or just a natural mood swing). Don't discuss, just say OK and continue your conversation in a friendly way. This allows her a face-saving way out. If she seems upset about it, but doesn't quit her job, you could see how friendly she is going forward, and then maybe try again in a few weeks. Some girls, even if they want it, or are undecided, need to say no and see if you are persistent or not. Backing off and giving her space may be a way of showing her respect that ultimately draws her in.
The underlying theme is to move forward at some pace that she feels comfortable with, and all the while, pretending that whatever is happening is not happening. In other words, don't discuss it (except maybe in bed, but nothing serious, just "pillow talk" -- "hao shufu" etc.) and life goes on just the same as if nothing is going on -- not because you're doing something "wrong" but because discussion adds nothing to this process, and perhaps risks loss of "face." Chinese like to get away with something while pretending that nothing is going on. Ideally, you should even be able to bring girls home without her bugging you. The 20-something in her might feel possessive, but she should be grown up enough to allow you to have your own life, while also getting her needs met. That's better for her than not getting any, I would think. A win-win for all concerned.
I don't know if this helps, but it's certainly fun for me to think about. Please post your results. Inquiring minds want to know.
Good luck,
NC
If you do bonk the "old maid" be sure to bring two bags, one for her, one for you in case hers falls off!
Since I don't fuck the elderly all that often (tehy don't frequent the bars I do) do this for me: put both hands in her pussy and clap.
And the old maid said, "I may be wrinkled and funny,
But take me to bed,
With a bag on my head
And I'll give you a run for your money!" :D
This is a continuation of the debate in the Reports of Distinction, specifically, post 4249 by Bull Shot in the Shenzhen thread.
If a girl tells a sad tale to a sympathetic customer, there is a good chance he will try to help the girl out by giving her extra money. This will increase the probability that she will repeat the story to future customers. She will tell her friends about the extra cash received and then her friends may tell similar stories to their customers.
I'm not saying that the girls are always lying or that they are not cheated or abused, I'm sure they very often are, I'm saying I think some of these girls may repeat their stories to many customers. Why? because they have previously been reinforced financially for doing so.
Do you agree?
It's a bit like the thai girls sending e-mails to there "boyfriends" asking for money. Some of their troubles are real, while others are invented or exaggerated. The behavior has been reinforced with money and sympathy, that reinforcement will cause them to repeat the behavior.
This a another example of operant conditioning at work.
If you don't understand the meaning of "operant conditioning" try a google search, it is very interesting.
I never heard any of those kinds of stories. If I were to hear them though, I would never believe them. China is all about face. A person with genuine problems would never talk about them to a complete stranger, especially a customer. Think about it for a minute, if the girl's telling the truth, she loses all face whether you give her the money or not. If she's snowing you good, you lose all face... Which is the more likely situation, a fresh off the boat foreigner getting snowed and losing face or a naive Chinese girl telling her life problems to a john and losing face? Believe me, 99.9999% of the time, you're getting snowed.
Believe me, 99.9999% of the time, you're getting snowed.
We don't know what the percentages are, but I agree with Moody, you should not believe what a girl is saying, no matter how sincere she may have seemed. It might be true but it probably isn't.
Maybe she is only telling you her sad story because she has learned that some guys fall for it and give her extra money.
Do I sound like a cynic?

I will never forget a girl in Pattaya that told me her mother needed an operation. Her whole family lived on the outskirts of Pattaya so I decided to go by for a visit one day. I saw an older lady running around the house and inquired. "That's my mother", she said. "I thought you said your mother could not walk", I replied. "Well, she is not my real mother, I just call her that, uh, the lady you saw is just my auntie".

There are the rare cases and if (like in my case i.e. Shenzhen thread) you befriend the girl and see her more than once, she might actually be telling you the truth. Should I find her in the stables next time I go, then I will know I was snowed, but she has yet to return to any that I frequent.
