Last night we followed everyone's advice and went to Carolina's first. Found it to be dingy, and all the women (literally all) just sat there on their phones. Dudes sitting across from them waiting to get approached like an awkward high school dance.
Left and went to Crystal's which we found to be a way better establishment. Cleaner, better lighting, just as many chicas but admittedly not quite the consistency as Carolina's. But we did find the hottest women at either place, a dark skinned Colombian named Cali (or Callie? Kari? If you know for sure please tell me as it was loud and I couldn't quite hear).

So just got back from the island and had some great fun at the clubs:

Finally got to see Vanessa. As others have described, she's great but nearly impossible to get to. She's speaks English well. She mainly works daytime, and nighttime she's either TLN or resting in her room. She's been on island for over a year. Other services beyond regular (and culo) are available but I did not partake.

It appears to be 20+ minute ride rather than 10 minute ride from cruise port, so would $30 be taxi cost rather than $10-15 from cruise port?

Just got back from a morning visit. Arrived about 11:45 am. The power was out again so no lights and no AC. Two heavy set dark skinned latinas were there when I arrived. It seems you are better off taking the bus to Phillipsburg and a taxi from there. Bus fare is a couple of dollars. Taxi to Suckergarden from Phillipsburg should be around 10, I guess.

If mongering at the Suckergarden bars is your main goal, then Simpson Bay is a poor choice to stay without a car. Pick somewhere closer (like Divi Little Bay). Simpson Bay has the best nightlife on the island though.

It is not only cheaper than taxi, but you need to account convenience and flexibility going to / leaving from and checking out other clubs.

I am seriously considering renting an apartment year round in SXM. I have been to SXM 3 times before COVID and love it.
Looks like I can get some great ocean views 1 bed apartments for $2000 - $3000 / month.

You have parking right in front of entrance or the side of Carolinas. If you do not leave any valuables visible in car and park close to the entrance, you should be fine.2nd night during my last visit parked my car was in the 1st parking space car around the corner, in plain view from the entrance, right under the electric pole. When I left the club around 9:30 (so not very late) 4 "kids" (ages from approx 12-13 to perhaps 16) sitting on the hood of my rental. As I approached, the younger two jump off and demand "dollars". The "other" 2 are laughing. I only have 20's, so no effing way. One of the older 2, both of whom are at least a foot taller (but skinnier) than I, start messing with the car's mirror, which could cost me a lot more than a few dollars. The "security guard" who I used to always tip is nowhere to be found. The taxi drivers sitting on the steps just laugh.
What would you do? Any suggestions? Getting confrontational with the locals, especially the local "kids" literally is the least attractive option.
I went back inside, got change from $20, and handed a few buck to the "kids". The car mirror luckily was still in place. I did drive to the clubs a few more times at night, always around 8:30-9 pm, when back in the day it used to be pretty safe, but the front parking was already occupied and every time I got "bad vibes" from the folks hanging around the place. Didn't see the "security guard" at all. Ended up going only in the afternoons, which is far from what I wanted.
Also had an "incident" where a scooter rider started following me from Philipsburg to Simpson Bay, then blocked the road and claimed my car side-swiped him and he almost fell. I didn't feel touching anything. A new "shakedown" tactics by the locals, anyone knows? I managed to get around him and drove to my hotel where, fortunately, the parking lot had a security guard.
So maybe hiring a taxi is not such a bad idea? I've been going to SXM literally since the last century, and I can't believe I just wrote the previous sentence. But, IMO, since the hurricane and especially since COVID things have deteriorated substantially. Or maybe it's just me.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Anyway, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Safety issues should definitively be a part of what we should discuss here.
How to protect ourselves? My two cents on the issue:
1.
You say security was nowhere to be seen, which IME is normal in these kind of establishments. The bar should be for girls, gents and bartenders. Security guys are behind closed doors upstairs at Carolina's, I believe. I am therefore a bit surprised you did not ask the bartender about this when you changed the 20 dollar bill. That would be my first suggestion and would defintively solved the situation IMO.
2.
I always make sure I have change in my pocket for exactly these circumstances, and suggest the same to others. Sometimes you meet a hobo that need a little bit of "help". It has happened to me twice in the last 20 years, and only after dark (200+ bar visits, half at night). It was awkard, but I never felt in jeopardy.
3.
I also think that we do ourselves a disfavour to accuse the locals for these situations. In the cases I am aware of the kids were uneducated illegal immigrants without English skills. 99,99% of locals are on our side.
4.
I always have full insurance on my car rental, and even an extra insurance for deductable. If the kid broke the car's mirror, I would simply get a new car the next day without any extra cost. Problem solved.
5.
If anything happens at the parking lot at night, the bar should be made aware. Also, report it here. Security outside the bar is essential. Carolina's would lose business otherwise, and would eventually have to take action. One way or the other. Or be out of business. Money talks.
Personally I will still use car rental as my preferred form of transportation. Day and night. Just take normal precautions.

The problem with rental cars on the island is that they are easily identifiable with the R plates. They are deliberately targeted by all the criminals. Also, always carry a bottle of beer with you when you walk back to your car, it may make the little hoods think twice or in worst case you have something to defend yourself with.
The club you really have to be careful of is Empire and the car park at weekends, if you come out late it's full of tugs from Dutch quarter looking to cause trouble.
If you want to play it safer, quite a few of girls from Red diamond are on the game and you also get a lot of freelance in Simpson Bay. Go to Red Piano in Pelican Key on a Monday night and they are all in there during some stage of the night, also Soggy Dollar on Tuesday night, seriously some Tuesday nights in Soggy you have like 10-15 girls from the clubs in there anyway.
Far safer and with Carolina only got about 8 girls apparently, you will prob get better variety in Simpson Bay.

The problem with rental cars on the island is that they are easily identifiable with the R plates. They are deliberately targeted by all the criminals. Also, always carry a bottle of beer with you when you walk back to your car, it may make the little hoods think twice or in worst case you have something to defend yourself with.
A number of car rental agencies have cars with EU / French plates. I used to know which ones when I was going to SXM more frequently. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but other than sometimes present and easily removable rental agency stickers, there's no way to ID them as rental cars?

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Anyway, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Safety issues should definitively be a part of what we should discuss here.
How to protect ourselves? My two cents on the issue:
1.
You say security was nowhere to be seen, which IME is normal in these kind of establishments. The bar should be for girls, gents and bartenders. Security guys are behind closed doors upstairs at Carolina's, I believe. I am therefore a bit surprised you did not ask the bartender about this when you changed the 20 dollar bill. That would be my first suggestion and would defintively solved the situation IMO.
2.
I always make sure I have change in my pocket for exactly these circumstances, and suggest the same to others. Sometimes you meet a hobo that need a little bit of "help". It has happened to me twice in the last 20 years, and only after dark (200+ bar visits, half at night). It was awkard, but I never felt in jeopardy.
3.
I also think that we do ourselves a disfavour to accuse the locals for these situations. In the cases I am aware of the kids were uneducated illegal immigrants without English skills. 99,99% of locals are on our side.
4.
I always have full insurance on my car rental, and even an extra insurance for deductable. If the kid broke the car's mirror, I would simply get a new car the next day without any extra cost. Problem solved.
5.
If anything happens at the parking lot at night, the bar should be made aware. Also, report it here. Security outside the bar is essential. Carolina's would lose business otherwise, and would eventually have to take action. One way or the other. Or be out of business. Money talks.

They don't care about the security of some fly-in gringo in a rental jalopy. To do so would mean chasing away a large part of their "traditional clientele".
Long time visitor to SXM, but haven't been in many years. My visits date back to the original Seaman's which is now Empire, I believe. Sad to here about what appears to be a "shake down" going on if you park on the side of Carolinas. There is a youth center with a basketball court adjacent to Carolinas. So guess the kids aren't interested in hoops. But more hoopla. Carolina's is an oasis, so the kids are local. There is a community down that road on the side where you park and guess the kid thugs are now finding it easy pickings to intimidate Carolinas customers.
The fact that your rental car (which I do advise you get) if you are visiting the island has a bulls eye on it with a license plate starting with an are, doesn't help. Parking as close to the front is the preferred location. With that being said, and again leaving with a bottle of beer in hand is not a bad strategy as well, just in case, as previously mentioned, this is what I would suggest.
Strength in numbers withers away if you challenge these assholes verbally and yell get the fuck out of here or shout out Policia. Policia. This will get OTHER people's attention. When you call for the police. Have the same attitude you need with an aggressive dog you may encounter. If they sense fear, your easy prey. I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs. Not looking for a fight or confrontation. But don't mess with me or my rental. The more guys cave in to this scam, the more brazen these kid thugs will be. If you find yourself having to park way down at the end of the building and have no choice than ask some local to walk with you to the car. Buy two beers in the bar. And when he gets you to the car, give him the other beer and you have one for the road. A bit more dignified than having to pay someone cash to escort you to your vehicle. Sometimes a best defense is a good offense. Play it conservatively if you're a newbie. But I've been visiting the island since 1978. But I know things change and staying safe is a priority.
Again, sad to hear about these shake downs going down to solo travelers. Another idea. Make some friends at the bar and leave with a couple of guys together to your vehicle. All for the price of a beer!

Thanks again!Freelancers are around $150 for hour and it comes down to your game and negotiating skills. You can easily spot them as they are in the crowd or in front of place, by the way they look at you (want you look) gives it away. They are usually at Red Piano on Mondays and Soggy Dollar on Tuesdays. You might see them at Maho casino other days.
Strip clubs are much much pricier. Platinum has hottest girls mostly Eastern European but don't be surprised if they ask for crazy $ like $1 k or more to go home with you + bar fee. Daytime, all clubs are catering mainly to ship crew and passengers but nighttime, it's a different story.
I mostly frequent Carolina / Crystal / Empire at night and especially for Carolina / Crystals I see good portion of customers are tourists and not mainly locals. This is especially true during high season Nov-March.
Dutch license plates are shorter than the ones from the French side. The French ones are very long and the Dutch ones are more like the USA size.
Almost every Dutch rental the starts with the letter "R "really stupid.
Bus "be" M and P are mostly local residential plates.
Taxi "T: van "V" the rest I never paid attention to.
As for the French plates I have no Idea.
In the same situation from a distance I would just not approach my car and go back into the bar for a while.

All, I am traveling and making a stop in Sint Maarten, I am hoping that someone can recommend a good, laid back Car Rental place. Someone who will let me slide if I can only provide my Driver's License photocopy. My passport and credit card I have with me but I never travel with my DL. In the past I never had an issue at Budget and Dollar. But maybe things have changed. Also a good price never hurt!

Just got back and wanted to quickly report:
First of all, damn those roads are really bad. Speed bumps everywhere (why?) and demon pot holes waiting for you (French side of course is much better upkeep). No road signs on the island, you are definitely at the mercy of GPS. Definitely doesn't help that there's only 1 road to get around, and if there's traffic, or a raised bridge, prepare for a long commute, and this is slow season.
Parked around the side of Carolina's facing the tennis court (does Carolina's have a sign? I had to ask the 2 old guys at front if this was the place, much to their amusement). Bunch of locals trying to call out to me outside, either trying to sell me something or ascertain what they could get from me. I just smiled and waved them off.
Went inside Carolina's, only 2 girls were sitting at the bar (it was about 8:30 pm), pretty empty, they said more girls were in the back about to come out, so I decided to hit Crystal and check out their line-up. A local tried to get me to come with him to El Capitan, which to me was pretty funny. My question is transportation. Basically I have been reading that renting a car is a necessity. Well I don't know how to drive. And I do not see Uber available. Am I screwed? The "security guard" who I used to always tip is nowhere to be found. The taxi drivers sitting on the steps just laugh.
First, I realize this is very easy for me to say, and not so easy to do.
I'm not sure how threatening their "demand" was, but I'd have been tempted to either waive them off with a laugh and a "No man, Sorry," or go back into the club and let them know what's going on.
You can't exactly call in the police and tell them someone asked you for a dollar and you gave it to them.
If the locals realize that all they have to do is ask for money and customers will give it to them, it will be like feeding stray cats. There will be more of them all the time. Why not?
Maybe guys in cars aren't the clubs' main source of income, but I can't imagine they want to lose that business, or attract a bunch of robbers to their door front. Next they'll be harassing customers from the cruise ships, etc. Having crimes occurring on their doorstep isn't good for their reputation or relationship with the government. I would think they would intervene and discourage the kids from trying it again.
Rule #1 on these islands has always been "don't f**k with the tourists. " I saw a local who got into an altercation with a tourist on another island beaten severely with batons by the police.
The kids may know better than to push it too far.

.Probably, if that happens at noon on the Front Street near the pier and only if the "suspect" doesn't get away on a scooter before the cops arrive (the main Dutch side police station 2 blocks away).
If it's 2 AM, you're in El Capitan's (or Empire, or Sunset or Casa blanca's) parking lot with crackhead following you, I don't think even if that suspects ever gets caught your body parts that may come in contact with whatever weapon he'd be carrying would feel any better.

But even those who manage smaller hotels should be able to "hook you up". First time I'd go to Carolina during the day and arrange a return trip. After 9 pm the roads are almost empty and I suppose many taxi drivers wouldn't mind a quick buck even late (r) at night. Alternatively, usually several taxi drivers hang out in front of Carolina, and you might get a better deal from them (if you find them trustworthy).

Gentlemen, thank you very much for all the info. I've read back to the beginning of 2024 and am currently working on a place to stay.
I see the recommendations and would like to stay in Divi Little Bay. However, there are two hotels there with similar names: Divi Little Bay Beach Resort and Oceans at Divi Little Bay. I saw one person recommend the Beach Resort but most just say Divi or Divi Little Bay. The hotels seem to be right next to each other so the location is about the same and both have free parking. Oceans is more expensive but has better reviews. Is there a preference or are they both good choices? Thanks in advance?
I believe that part of Divi has been converted to timeshares. If you are interested in the beach they are both the same. If you like as I do I pick a water view room.
If you are going solo pick the lease expensive place.

Excited for my first visit, arriving from Miami on Wednesday. Almost cancelled and switched the trip to the DR for fear everything being closed down for low low season but I'd rather come check out some place new, hopefully it's not *too* quiet. I was told by the owner of El Capitan that chicas from the DR are no longer getting visas to work in SXM.

Last few trips I went, this is exactly what happened at nighttime. Most chicas were on their phones, did not pay attention who's coming in / out or giving attention to clients within the place. It puzzles me why management allows this type of behavior.
In past, chicas would approach you right when you enter the door, interested in your business. Trying to talk to you and get you to like them / buy them drink or take them in back.
This could be only nighttime behavior bc I was there during the day when ship crew is in town and club is full of people and chicas.

I have an interest in checking out all the islands in the Lesser Antilles that offer decent pfp options. Since I don't have the patience for really long flights anymore it makes sense to me.
What is the marijuana situation in general in these places. Can you find it easily and use it in most of these places or are they similar to the DR which demonizes it? How strict are they with tourists coming for vacations with baggage and dog searches etc. ? What islands to avoid because of it?
What island would be more public transportation friendly to someone without a car?

I have to agree. Have been to the clubs 4 or 5 times this trip. Carolinas, which is usually the number one club, has not been all that great. Not that many girls. Almost all just sitting around on their phones or chatting with each other. Crystals has a couple of girls that are very attractive but indifferent to the clients. I did manage hook up with a tall girl from Venezuela who was fairly good looking, friendly and provided good service. Unfortunately she returned home last Sunday. Empire is also a mongering waste land. Few girls, preoccupied and not to my liking.
Didn't bother checking out El Capitain until two nights ago out of desperation. To my surprise there were a lot more girls than at the other clubs I had visited. There were a few I found interesting and most were hustling for business. First night I went with Donna. She has a nice figure with good size natural boobs. Everything was covered but still provided a good service. My second night I believe it was Gloria approached me and asked for $80 for half hour. She doesn't speak English but understood "ouch". I think between 8 and 9 PM its the best time to see chicas at Carolinas. You might ask the bartender if there are any cruise ships in the next day. The chicas are very busy with cruisers in the afternoon. If there are cruise ships in try around 3:30 as the cruisers go back to the ships. You might see a number of Phillipinos or other crew member sitting around drinking beer. They rarely go to the back, they are just sitting around enjoying the view.
Don't screw around trying to get pot on an airplane. It isn't worth the trouble.

Thanks to all the contributors and stories on these pages, I'm going to have my first trip coming up later this month and information here has been rock solid! I'll provide some info based on my trip when I get back. I will be in the Pelican area so hoping to check out the freelancer scene a little bit more, and maybe one of the strip clubs, although I am more of a daytime or early evening kind of person so I don't know what sort of luck I'll have earlier in the day / evening but happy to share my experiences.
One question for someone a little more familiar with the island: I've read not to try to walk from Carolina / Crystal to El Capitan, and appreciate that advice. But I was wondering if it was ill advised to walk from Phillipsburg to Carolina / Crystal during the day time? I know the best talent is likely to be best in the evening, but since I am likely just taxing around a bit and taxis seem fall into the category of "accessible, but not convenient" from what I've seen, to save on some of the shorter trips I was thinking of taxing to Phillipsburg and then walking through Pond Island up to Crystal / Carolina club. My assumption was that wouldn't be a bad idea during the day, but inadvisable at night, but I am inexperienced on this island as well as the broader Caribbean so appreciate any insight on how I can best enjoy that part of my trip to collect some good stories for everyone else.

I went to Carolinas, Crystal, Empire, and El General during the day and saw nothing of interest. I went back to all except El General at night and took Naomi from Crystal to the back. Price was as mentioned before: $60 US for 30 min + 10 for the room. Service was fine but nothing special. She asked if I wanted to go for an hour but there was no discount (I. E. Cost would be $120) so I declined. I was very pleased that a beer for me and a drink of her choice for her only cost $8. I would add that there was no pressure to buy drinks at any of the clubs.
Overall it was okay but I didn't go back a couple of days later when I had the chance. I am off the island now.

- I sort of disagree that there is a direct correlation between "hotness" and asking price. I mean, it CAN be. But it can also mean that she is simply a good seller, experienced professional, and not at least spoiled by the dollar.

I have quite a few TLN experiences over the years. I have never paid more than 400 for the girl and these have been some of the hottest names in Carolina. Never taken out a girl from El Capitan, Crystal or Empire.
A lot depends on the day of the week and the time. Picking girl up at 8 pm then they will ask for more than say taking a girl out at 12 am.
Always try a girl in the club first before taking out.

Yeah, I would not ask the most popular chicas about TLN on a Friday/Saturday evening expecting the best prices. Timing can be important. I once got a chica "for free" from 2am if I paid for a TDD the following day. There are a lot of possiblities out there.

Just a quick note on the strip clubs. I had just one visit to each of Platinum and Red Diamond early December, so this is just a very shallow summary:

I finished up a trip to SXM earlier this month, thanks to those that previously provided intel and talked me out of trying to walk anywhere (it was my first trip to the Caribbean. I am usually good with heat, but Caribbean heat hits different. I get it now).
I went to Carolina's twice during the day time. A couple notes for anyone else that might have had some of the same reservations about visiting at night due to being unfamiliar with the country and area, I felt extremely safe during the day time. I took a taxi there both times just after lunch, and spent around 1. 5 hours there. Both times no issue getting dropped off and lots of activity in the area. There were some unofficial "cab drivers" parked outside of Carolinas. Both days I hitched a ride with a man named Francesco, who was actually really nice and I never had any concerns about getting in his jeep. He also took me into Yudi's for me to break a $50 after I mistakenly thought I had some smaller bills and nobody ever looked at me twice or made me wonder if they had nefarious intentions. Probably different at night but definitely nothing to worry about in the day for anyone else venturing into a new area like I was.
Day 1 I showed up and went into Carolinas. I was attacked early by a girl that wasn't really my cup of tea, thankfully she spoke little to no English, and I spoke little to no Spanish, so it was not difficult to move on from that conversation.
