Greetings everyone,

I've started this new thread to provide a centralized location to catalog the Forum's best travel reports. Here's the idea:

If you have written one or several detailed travel reports, or if you know of such reports, then please post the link here.

You may also include a short summary of the nature of the report.

A sample report would be something like this:

You can copy and paste the link into a report, or you can do it the easy way and use the tags, which you would format like this:

[post]Post ID number here

You can identify the Post ID by moving your mouse pointer over the "Quote" button and reading the Post ID number in the Status Bar at the bottom of your browser window. It's the last number at the end of the link text, just after the letters "p=".

Please note: In order for this thread to be effective, it cannot turn into a discussion forum. I don't want to have to be so tough about this, but any reports that do not include a link to another report will be deleted.

WB, that is exactly what I found. However, I have my doubts whether she is/was a jinitera. She seems to be just a "normal" college girl. Prior to my trip, I communicated with her through badoo. When I arrived in Cuba, foolish me stood her up for the first two days. She still agreed to meet me on day 3. Nice girl (smile). The reason I stood her up was because I was finding far too much action elsewhere, and my recollection of her photo was that she was just ok. Finally met her at her university and the girl I saw approaching from a distance was a stunner. Pictures rarely provide the full story. With that said, we stayed out all night but in the end, no action. On my return trip, four months later, she agreed to travel with me for my 8/9 days in Cuba. Prerequisite was that I meet the family and stay in her province for two days. She did not stay with me while I was in her province. Thereafter we traveled and had a great time. She never asked me for a dime. I have since sent her some money, following the hurricanes, but again, she has never asked.

Whether I am fooling myself or not, I prefer the above. But, I fundamentally agree with you. They have their lives. We are -in most cases- a passing interest. Literally.

This does not mean that the tourist and the native cannot connect at some level. It is just not easy.

Lessons (only a summary) as noted by GTA guy, who only knew 1 word of Spanish when he arrived:

1) Know for a fact that you might be scammed by locals - always check your change and make sure the taxi meter is on.
2) Stand firm on the going rate - they need it more than you. The monthly salary for a doctor is CUC 50.
3) You're the boss - don't be a wimp. Know what you want and make sure you get it.
