Well now that I'm freshly single I thought I'd finally actually register here as I might actually have something to add to the board. I've actually been three previous times but had been with my Thai GF each time and only had the odd chance to slip away to a couple of massage joints. So I already booked a flight and a room for the first three nights at the LK Empress to finally get to experience Pattaya firsthand! We'll see how the trip goes after that and if I stay or head up to BKK and beyond.
I've spent the past 16 or so years mongering in the US, Europe, and the DR. I'm interested to see the differences between those and Thailand. I've been lurking here for a while reading up on the scene, so I think I have a pretty good grasp on what to expect. But who knows what happens the first go-go bar I walk into LOL!

I'm looking for a like-minded wing man to plan a trip sometime maybe around January or February for two weeks in Bangkok and pataya. Need the phone really just for internet and apps.No need to buy a phone, unless you are totally paranoid about losing yours when on holiday. But if you decide to carry a burner phone in lieu of your regular phone, surf over to the Bay of E and search for "unlocked GSM cell phone. " You'll find hundreds for sale in all price ranges. Then install a Thai SIM card when you arrive.
No need to use the phone service from your home country either. The roaming fees will be outrageous.
Most guys install a Thai SIM card in their regular phones for the duration of their holiday. Once you clear customs at the airport a few steps away you'll see counters for all the cell phone carriers. Read the signs and pick a plan that works best for you. They staff will swap out our regular SIM card for a Thai SIM card and configure the help menus to English. Take care not to lose your original SIM card. On your way home, re-install it into your phone.
Callers to your regular cell phone number will roll over to voice mail. If you need to pick up those messages while on holiday, figure out how to do that remotely. Usually that requires calling yourself and entering a PIN to get into the voice mail menu.
Wi-Fi is everywhere in Thailand and usually free. So any VOIP app will work. I have the Skype app on my cell phone, and on my lap top. The LINE messaging app is also popular in Thailand.

Google Maps to find something is important. Wifi in Hotels can be quite shitty some times, depending where you stay. I can always use my phone internet instead for my notebook computer. I use unlimited data so don't get a downgrade of speed regardless of my total usage, then you just pay an amount based on how fast you want the download speed to be. a sensible limited total data volume is also possible, if you are sure you wont use it all.
You can call forward your normal home number to your Thai phone number or forward to message bank. Cost of a forwarded call to Thailand will be a little bit high so don't talk very long. You decide based on whether you get a lot of home country calls or very few. I don't get a lot. Can leave a message specifying your Thai number for urgent things on your message bank service.
When I get a new smart phone, Huawei this year (dual SIM), I don't throw away my old phone (even battery is getting to a rather short life). So it can have my old home country SIM in there as well as Thai SIM and both can operate on 4 G. A dual SIM phone is very handy to me, and I have multiple phone handsets (not with intention to carry them all at the same time). They are not burners though since, I don't throw them away unless really inoperable. Having a completely separate "monger Phone" can be handy in case of snoopers into your normal phone.
Airport probably has booths selling deals for carriers DTAC, AIS, and True. I really don't know which is best. I use MyCat, probably not available at airport, because its cheaper. I use DTAC prepaid with no issues. I'll add service to the card via website prior to leaving US. You'll need an unlocked phone as your us phone most likely is locked to a carrier. IPhones come unlocked from factory but check with your carrier to confirm so. Issue with single sim phone is you won't be getting calls from US so yes, maybe purchase a dual sim phone on Thailand if you plan on multiple visits.

My phone wasnt able to roam last time so got True for 800 THB one month 20 GB of data. I wasnt close in using all. The point is to use both at the same time at least to receive calls, even if receiving normal call maybe rare. E-SIM would not solve much if can only switch between them, only avoiding the hassle of manual switch over (replacement). I suspect will only allow one e-SIM at a time. Is handy though not having hassle to get a new nano-SIM for my new phone when my SIM was previously only micro-SIM size.
So e-SIM is good but does not replace Dual concurrent SIM phones.
20 GB is indeed vast overkill unless playing and downloading lots of video or making lots of video calls by Skype. I did expire 5 GB one month, using Skype video too often, or very large download data files for work. Skype tries to use as much bandwidth as it can get. LINE video is probably much more economical.
I used to have a True Land line home internet which was lousy. CAT was vastly better. I therefore am unlikely to ever buy any other True services. That is just a personal bias. AIS was O.K. for mobile phone but expensive for a fast service. Signal not good in all places. No signal in Soi Cowboy in the past. Obscured by buildings. ha ha. Meant the Mrs could not contact me.

I've heard from fellow BR Black mongers that they have recieved less preferential treatment in Asia for mongering. That's a generalization of Asia not specific to Thailand.

For those that don't know, two big bits of information coming up this week for traveling mongers.
1) Thailand may end Test and Go in May 2022 and replace it with a single antigen test at the airport. Waiting on the government to confirm.

The heads of state for most of the Asia Pacific region will be there to pow wow about big political issues and the PRC will be there to stir up the situation. Good hotel rooms will be scarce and even the two star hotel will be packed. Thailand might even crack down on some of your favorite venues to give the world a wholesome image of the country. Hello all fellow mongers. I will be in BKK from Wednesday 26 July to Thursday 3 August. I will be staying in a hotel near Nana.
It is my first trip to Bangkok, but I am well prepared and an experienced monger in other countries. Some 30 years experience. Wrote a guide 15 years ago about Singapore.
The scene at Nana is mandatory I'm planning trip to Huai Khwang for Soapies. Testing out freelancers at Thermae bar, Grande center Point Terminal 21, and not least Thanon Phet Uthai.
Thanon Phet Uthai can be a bit scary, but I've read that the girls there are younger and not as mentally exhausted as the ones walking around Sukhumvit. Does anyone want to join?
Otherwise, we would be happy to meet over a beer and share experiences.
