I have been in Phuket before... but this is my first time in Pattaya. In the first days of my Pattaya trip I got bargirls from the area I stay (usually around soi 2 - soi 6, Second Road). Avoid the place as you avoid plague in Soi 6: Smoke and Mirrors. They are going to open a new bar in Soi 6 which they call Smoke and Kisses.

Using info from this board and I decided to stay and the Queen Victoria on Soi 6 in Pattaya. At first I was amazed by the low cost of rooms and the location right in the middle of the action on Soi 6. I agreed to stay for two nights. I tried to use the wall safe but there was aproblem with the code. The British owner came and showed me how to use the safe. After I put in my code and started using the safe. When I was about to checkout I found that 5000 Baht had been stolen from the safe. I suspect that it was stolen by the owner but I can't be absolutely sure. I am putting this out there as a potential warning to visitors. It is the slow season and you have to really weigh your options when considering lower cost accomodations. If you do still decide to stay at the Queen Vic definately do not use the wall safe!

Another suggestion on Soi 6, is try not to make a commitment to that girl even if you are attracted to her. Invest sometime to feel her out, while having a beer. Remember if you don't already know most bars on Soi 6, have ST, room upstair, price is usually 300 for the Bar, and 700 Max for the girl upstairs. day 1 in pattaya

Best rates for change money in Pattaya I found at northern road. At end of second road to the north is a dolphin circuit, similar to them at beach road and central pattaya road. If you are at the circuit at second road, soi naklua and northern road, than head up the northern road. Left hand side is a food department store and right hand side is a kiss, drink and food restaurant.
After the department store is a small liquer shop and than the money changer. I found the rates there always higher than anywhere else in Pattaya. Even the Richly (guess it's a Super Rich Clon) had always lower rates.

Best rates in Bangkok are Super Rich in a small soi between Big C, opposite Siam Square and Pratunam. The rates at the change offices there are better than the one inside Big C and the Super Rich change hut at Chit Lom BTS station.

In Bangkok, down past Soi 4, from Nana Hotel on the left hand side across from the Raja Hotel, is a Massage Parlor, small Soi that leads into Nana Condo? and Nana City Inn, is a small booth. If they are advertising Taxi's 800 baht to Pattaya, they are pretty much for the Taxi with a meter but the timing must be right to get this price. Meaning they have notice of a Meter Taxi, coming to BKK with a customer already from Pattaya, and they can kill two birds with one stone you might get the 800 baht rate since the Taxi needs a return fare to Pattaya. For myself the timing has never been right, but I always get for 1100 baht, car always a Volvo from them. Been using them for over 8 years never had a problem.
On the return if you are in the area at the end of Soi Diana corner of Soi Baukhao there is a small wooden taxi booth, 900 baht to airport and that includes toll, make sure to indicate this... very dependable and always on time or early.

I suspect that it was stolen by the owner but I can't be absolutely sure.Pretty unlikely. Usually these wall safe thefts are by the staff -- rub a bit of oil from the side your nose over the keypad, come back and see which keys are smudged, then punch in all the combinations of those numbers.

I just spent an extended vacation in Thailand and when I wasn't island hopping I hit Pattaya because Bangkok providers are getting too expensive and the quality is in decline. Pattaya seems more dangerous to me than ever before and I've been going to Thailand for 10 years. I've never had a problem walking down beach road late, but now I feel like it isn't very safe. If you aren't in good shape and look like you can take care of yourself I wouldn't suggest walking alone there these days. The girls on the walk are quoting 500 baht still where prices have risen in Bangkok, but I'm not much on picking up girls on beach road. I saw Na working day and night. One evening I was sitting out having a beer and had a few girls run over to me quickly and sit down. Next thing I know the police are taking id cards of girls on the walk. The two that sat down told me they would be fined 500 baht each if they walked or stood there alone. Wouldn't it be better to take the males or katoey off the streets late at night since they are the violent ones? This is my final day of vacation.

Well, Tony seems to be a very active guy. Everywhere he tries to make some business. If it's Fitness Centers, Clubs, Shawarma grills, or what ever. At Kiss, Food and Drink restaurant near northern Pattaya road I saw even a transparent that Tony want to play a role in the city politic.

Well, about Tony Disco. There is obviously a double standard. Westerner don't need to pay a entrance fee. I always walk by the cashier and nobody stops me, by entering the club. While Arabs, Indians and the like have to pay to get in.

Pattaya's third world (beach road ladies) is closest than ever to the brand new hudge "Central Festival" commercial center.

It is not that beautiful there, the beach is not very nice, the ocean is outright disgusting with garbage and sewage floating around. (Not to mention that the place is full of prostitutes, which the non-monger crowd, believe it or not, don't like to be surrounded by... whereas that is the main attraction for others, like myself...)

I generally avoid Beach Road for mongering at night since it's too many drug users, drug dealers, ladyboys, petty criminals (these categories are not mutually exclusive...) hanging around there, so if the night scene on Beach Road comes to an end it's not necessarily a major loss, at least not to me. Hopefully this won't result in all the trouble makers hanging around Walking Street and the various Sois though, since that would be a pity.

I think Pattaya as a holiday rather than mongering destination is too much of a toilet to ever compete with other great beaches that civilians can go to, but I take your point that yes there are civilians there and numbers are increasing.

In April there were loads of russians and indians, many with a slightly sad look on their faces as they walked around with their wives and girlfriends surrounded by all the action.

5 days ago I and a friend of mine was there. I drank a Sprite (cost 40 baht) and my friend drank a "Black Russian" (cost 160 baht). As I wanted to move out for a hamburger, I left 40 baht on the table while my friend talked with a bargirl. I told my friend I go for a hamburger and will be back in 15 minutes. In meantime took mamasan my 40 baht and put between her breasts. Mamasan was holding a beer on her hand and put another bill for her beer in the case. (A lady drink costs 120 baht there). I told my friend that I paid my drink. Later when I met my friend, he told me that he paid also for my drink and that beer Mamasan had.

My friend paid 160 baht too much. I know that it is not a fortune. But the most important thing here is the principle. What Mamasan did is exactly stealing money from my friend, as I paid my drink. But Mamasan demanded the cost of my drink from my friend once more time. And even whether me nor my friend gav any ladydrink, Mamasan demanded 120 baht for the beer she drank.

So I will say: Avoid "Mr. Krit Beer Bar" whereever you see in Pattaya.

Spent a few days (and nights in Pattaya) back in May. Been to Bangkok many times, but this was my first time in Pattaya. Had a good time although I don't think I could spend too long time there. But 3-4 days in Crazy Land seemed about right. I'm really quite picky when it comes to the ladies so mostly went to the gogos on Walking Street for company. The bars start on the main road just after the turn toward the beach and before the turn to the beach road - both sides of the road.

Soi 7 has bars almost the entire length. I didn't bother investigating farther down (higher numbered sois).

The more "obvious" in-your-face go-go and bar activity is in PATTAYA (a 10B songthaew ride away from Jomtien) - remember to get off before Pattaya-south road or it's 20B all the way to the dolphins. Getting back get on a songthaew at the corner of south and second - it's 10B back but they wait for a full load before they leave so depending on time of day it might be better to walk down toward soi arab and flag one down

There is a minor amount of beach activity 500ST, 1000LT. My assessment of Jomtien is that is basically THAI and quite a bit more laid back. There isn't all that much "young" (18 to 22) stuff on the beach.

The beach is better than Pattaya if you like beaches and the breeze usually comes off the gulf straight up the sois

I don't think Pattaya is overpriced yet.
U can get everything here at least 2x cheaper than Patong.
Pattaya is still a bargain and a monger paradise.
The selection is quite good IMO. U will always found some diamond in the rough.
If u can't find a lady for ur taste in Pattaya u can still try Lbs..they r quite stunning also !

IMO, the vibe has really changed here compared to last year. I agree, mostly dregs and if you happen to find any quality, it is very overpriced.

Spent a couple weeks in Pats recently. Here's my take, in no particular order.

First, a general comment. Pattaya is a serious, hardcore, sex city. I differentiate between sex and mongering. For me, mongering is an experience of the entire thing, from leading up to the sex to after the sex. Pattaya, in my view, ranks pretty low on the experience category. Partly because it's so pushy, partly because the major sex areas are pretty gross (I mean filthy), and partly because it's a place where most people go to have as much sex as possible, and not much else.

It's not at all uncommon for a girl to promise LT and then run out after the first pop. You'll also hear, "what's your name? Where are you from?" more times than you can count. Most of the girls have little more to offer conversationally than that, and if they did they wouldn't really bother anyway. It's all about the score, for both sides.

The discos are packed, loud, dark, and 100% WG's. Not the Bangkok type where some of them might be open to it but not full-time WG's - these are all 100% WG's on a mission. I also found that the disco girls can actually be fairly picky, which is a bit odd. An interesting dichotomy at least. Some of the girls in the discos can be a bit more interesting (and sometimes hotter) at least, and for people on a budget it avoids the barfines. Also, I found pulling girls out of discos to be both the best and the worst experiences (in a variety of ways, including some real headcases) - maybe partly because you have a hard time seeing and learning what you are getting in those dark, loud places. But YMMV.

The go go's break down into three categories:

1. Pretty, boring girls (Super Baby and Super Girls, Heaven Above (though this one can be a bit more fun), Diamond, etc.)

2. Mix of girls, mostly not very good looking but a few diamonds in the rough (the vast majority), and environment varies but pretty much just "pick a girl" because you're not really gonna have much more fun than that in there.

3. Places with short-time rooms.

The girls will mostly expect to be barfined or push you to do it pretty fast, though it can be a fun delay or deny the barfines and just have fun with them for a while. This is a LOT more fun with friends than solo.

Which brings me to a point - amazingly, or ironically, I didn't find Pattaya to be a good place for single guys at all. It can be a really lonely place after a few days.

However, if you want as much sex as humanly possible in a short amount of time, Pattaya can definitely satisfy that!

I didn't do too much in beer bars (or "bar beers"), although I felt that might have been a mistake. However, the few times I did go in I got immediately bored by the same shtick as I'd heard a million times elsewhere - "what's your name? Where you from? You barfine me?".

I enjoyed the BJ and short-time bars a bit more than most places. They are certainly not really what I'd call a great night out, but there was a lot less BS and some of the girls were actually pretty good looking and talented. Much less trouble too. Bringing a good one home is always the best (and sometimes off the hook), but the bad ones are pure headache, or worse. And I'd put odds of getting a really bad one at about 1 in 3 or 1 in 4. Again, YMMV.

There are exceptions, and there is definitely fun to be had here. Some of the performances at my hotel were pretty spectacular. Also, some of these things might appeal to others. I'm not judging. To each his own. But overall I did not find Pattaya to be a really fun place - just a place for massive amounts of fairly cheap sex.

If you are a group of fun guys, regardless of age, you might have a blast in Pattaya. Should be pretty easy to do, really....especially if people in your group have never been to any place like this before. I imagine a ton of newbies are just totally floored by it for the first week or so!

If you are, however, a middle-aged guy traveling solo, and want more than just sex (like perhaps meeting a fairly interesting girl to spend a few days with), it's possible in Pats but I think there are better places for that. For one, China or the Philippines provide a lot better LT GFE's, because the girls actually are hoping to keep you longer. Bangkok as well, and perhaps even other places in Thailand.

Side note on this - I've found the Thai and other girls in Hong Kong to be a lot more fun than those in Pattaya. I guess it's just the prevailing and obscenely (to me at least) palatable reality that you are simply a number to them in Pattaya, nothing more, that kills any chance for a "mongering" experience. Thereby, even LT or very-LT feels a lot like ST.

Again, YM and your opinion may vary. It's all just my take.

Considering the composition of its inhabitants and guests, coupled with the crime rate, I would classify Pattaya as being relatively safe. The crime rate in Pattaya is real, robberies, burglaries, assaults, homicides and petty crimes are not uncommon but if you keep your wits about you and don't go looking for trouble, you can have the time of your life. Comparatively speaking, Pattaya is still a (monger’s) paradise despite the "Chicken Little" cries heard here as of late.

That was nearly 4:00am on the dark beach road last night. Now it's 11pm, and completely different. I'm wandering around Beach Road and Second Street - and all the sois in between - lots of tourist families and singles walking around, shops open and bright. Just popped into an internet cafe to cool down and drink a carrot juice - good for the liver!

I definitely second that opinion (except maybe the point about mongerer homicides being common?). Compared to other mongering destinations I have been to, one really has to do something really really dumb, or have some extraordinary bad luck, to get into trouble in Pattaya. Some of the things I have seen farangs do in terms of acting up, being drunk, disrespecting locals, would have gotten them a beating or maybe even stabbed or shot in other places.

Sure there are the ladyboys, pick pockets, petty thiefs, petty drug dealers, but other places have kidnappings, police shoot outs, violent gangs, and so on which Pattaya (IMHO) doesn't have any of.

The most likely source of trouble is probably drunk knuckle dragger farangs that will try to pick a fight, but there are so many cops around that this isn't really an issue either, again IMHO.

Sure Pattaya has some minor safety issues, but nothing worse than walking the streets of any city late at night I would have to say.

No reason to let your guard down completely, but all I do is keep an eye on my belongings, keep a bit of "small money" in my pocket and "big money" in my shoe, and calmly keep walking if approached by a ladyboy or drug dealer/user. (It is much harder to pickpocket/rob a moving target.) I also try to avoid being completely drunk and roaming aimlessly from bar to bar late at night also, although this isn't always a success...

I assure you, money was not at all the issue - I paid over market rates and would have gladly paid more for better experiences. Vibing with the girls, however, was a big issue. I found Pattaya girls to be too hardened for my taste. That's kind of a duh comment, I realize.

I also wasn't saying there aren't tons of other things to do in Pattaya (there most certainly are!) - but limiting the scope to the sex scene I was trying to distinguish the type of EXPERIENCE one has with the girls in Pattaya versus other mongering destinations. To me Pattaya breaks down like this:

1. A good place to have as much cheap sex as possible, and some pretty wild sexual experiences.

2. The sex scene, though massive, is very homogenous - despite the many options for places to meet girls, it all feels very much the same after a few days...primarily because the girls tend to be (and say and do) all the same (things).

Therefore, personally I found it quite monotonous and cold/lonely after a few days, especially compared to other places.

I have been visiting LOS for the past 10yrs been to many places in LOS and just booked my next trip in October. I am considering Pattaya as my last visit was a blast.

What I was hoping for from you fellow mongerers was a "real" opinion of Pattaya of late. From the reports here it goes from one extreme to another ie Totally dead, no tourists, costs 500bht to 1500bht to very expensive, many tourists, low quality 3000 bht+

On all my visits I would average between 1000-2000bht regardless of venue ie GoGo, beer bar, disco with very very little refusal, quality 6/7 to 9. That said experience of GoGos not as much as bars/discos etc

Please could someone provide an unbiased view as there seems to be alot of conflicting opinions here as in the past there did not seem to be so much focus by type/venue/quality eg Spinners getting 3000bht+, you simply made an offer of what you were willing pay regardless of venue/type and got an answer. More often than not its accepted. It seems there are so many variables now as to what a monger should/should not pay or where to go etc

I would be very greatful to anyone who can provide the "real" lowdown in simple terms

The average going rate?

Is it really busy/dead for tourist/mongering numbers?

General opinion of quality and type of girls. One shot, GFE (usually hit and miss)

Galaxy has been a big clip joint for as long as I remember. The ONLY time I went in, they actually charged me 150 baht for ice! The girls went around doing little lap dances and insisted you tip them for their little (and I do mean little) bump and grind like in the USA (cash in the garter) and really coped an attitude if you tipped less than a 50 baht note. Saw the reaction of one person, waved off the rest and got the hell out of there!!

There is another place closer to the entrance of Walking Street called Moulin Rouge. I'm presuming it operates under the same premise. The economy has hit Walking Street hard. The girls from the clip joints are now on the street trying to hustle customers upstairs (never saw that before).

If you really are looking for a taste of Europe in Pattaya, I noticed enough freelancers on Beach Road and Walking Street to satisfy any urge. Mostly 5-6.s's but a sprinkling of 7's and up. Good hunting!!

Anyway, nice report.

Spent a couple weeks in Pats recently. Here's my take, in no particular order.

First, a general comment. Pattaya is a serious, hardcore, sex city. I differentiate between sex and mongering. For me, mongering is an experience of the entire thing, from leading up to the sex to after the sex. Pattaya, in my view, ranks pretty low on the experience category. Partly because it's so pushy, partly because the major sex areas are pretty gross (I mean filthy), and partly because it's a place where most people go to have as much sex as possible, and not much else.

It's not at all uncommon for a girl to promise LT and then run out after the first pop. You'll also hear, "what's your name? Where are you from?" more times than you can count. Most of the girls have little more to offer conversationally than that, and if they did they wouldn't really bother anyway. It's all about the score, for both sides.

The discos are packed, loud, dark, and 100% WG's. Not the Bangkok type where some of them might be open to it but not full-time WG's - these are all 100% WG's on a mission. I also found that the disco girls can actually be fairly picky, which is a bit odd. An interesting dichotomy at least. Some of the girls in the discos can be a bit more interesting (and sometimes hotter) at least, and for people on a budget it avoids the barfines. Also, I found pulling girls out of discos to be both the best and the worst experiences (in a variety of ways, including some real headcases) - maybe partly because you have a hard time seeing and learning what you are getting in those dark, loud places. But YMMV.

The go go's break down into three categories:

1. Pretty, boring girls (Super Baby and Super Girls, Heaven Above (though this one can be a bit more fun), Diamond, etc.)

2. Mix of girls, mostly not very good looking but a few diamonds in the rough (the vast majority), and environment varies but pretty much just "pick a girl" because you're not really gonna have much more fun than that in there.

3. Places with short-time rooms.

The girls will mostly expect to be barfined or push you to do it pretty fast, though it can be a fun delay or deny the barfines and just have fun with them for a while. This is a LOT more fun with friends than solo.

Which brings me to a point - amazingly, or ironically, I didn't find Pattaya to be a good place for single guys at all. It can be a really lonely place after a few days.

However, if you want as much sex as humanly possible in a short amount of time, Pattaya can definitely satisfy that!

I didn't do too much in beer bars (or "bar beers"), although I felt that might have been a mistake. However, the few times I did go in I got immediately bored by the same shtick as I'd heard a million times elsewhere - "what's your name? Where you from? You barfine me?".

I enjoyed the BJ and short-time bars a bit more than most places. They are certainly not really what I'd call a great night out, but there was a lot less BS and some of the girls were actually pretty good looking and talented. Much less trouble too. Bringing a good one home is always the best (and sometimes off the hook), but the bad ones are pure headache, or worse. And I'd put odds of getting a really bad one at about 1 in 3 or 1 in 4. Again, YMMV.

There are exceptions, and there is definitely fun to be had here. Some of the performances at my hotel were pretty spectacular. Also, some of these things might appeal to others. I'm not judging. To each his own. But overall I did not find Pattaya to be a really fun place - just a place for massive amounts of fairly cheap sex.

After literally hundreds of times in Pattaya (coz I've lived in Thailand forever), I've come to the conclusion that I much prefer doing it with friends. Bangkok, also better to have friends along, but solo is OK. Angeles City, equally good by myself or with others. And Phnom Penh, great fun even alone, at least if you like the hostess bar scene that's it become recently.

Other people will no doubt feel differently about these, but, as I say, an interesting topic that might help a lot of guys plan their trips.

Trying to dissuade one person not to overpay is futile. With the advent of new malls and expensive hotels, Pattaya prices will indeed rise further. One guy overpaying isn't gonna change the market either. The market has started to change because there are lots of guys paying the higher prices.

I am a fan of paying as low as possible, but you simple can't get a good looking freelancer in a disco for 500ST anymore. (only the old dregs will go for 500ST and say "kop kun ka" because they are grateful that someone picked them).

There's always a big market for 500 baht ST's in Pattaya...despite some people clinging to the delusion that somehow we can ALL collude and thereby get stunners in gogo's for that price. Reality is there's a lot of markets within the market...something for pretty much everyone, price-wise.

On that point, I actually know of people paying 20,000 baht for girls out of Fashion Club a couple years back. Shit, I would too, but I just couldn't understand how that place worked so left after like 20 min.

And on another example about different markets for different wallets, I have two memberships in G-clubs in Bangkok. 30,000 baht a piece and no guarantee of getting laid. And I am certainly not the only customer in there - those places are packed with members!

Don't mean to turn this into a diatribe - just giving examples of different markets within the overall market, which is actually exactly the way developed and efficient markets work. I.e. they price discriminate. It's a very simple and unavoidable reality. In fact, it's a good thing!

I agree with you generally, but this is less so in Thailand than other places. I find that once I know an area, I practically never have to ask the price. I know a samlor ride across town costs 40, or a motocy 10, or coffee 12, or khao man gai 20, etc. I just hand over the amount.

I know some people who trade clothes in Pratunam. No matter which vendor they go to, they'll get the same price. No one tries to highball or lowball you.

Unless you're a tourist mark, dealing with predators like the standing taxis outside Patpong, or all the public transport in Phuket, or the gem scam shops, or the massage places where touts take you.

So with regards to this topic I'd wouldn't say every encounter is unique, as far as price is concerned -- I'd say that either you know the price (read here, or bargain in some different places until you get a feel), or you run into a chancer and get taken for a ride.

Whether you give presents or tips or whatever, yes, that depends on the uniqueness of the encounter.

Some good points, but i'm going to play the devil's advocate...i met a gal in Pattaya awhile back, beer bar girl, but had more of a gogo look to her, extremely good looking. Hit it off with her, great chemistry, we spent several wonderful nights together, i gave her 1000 baht for each full night. About 4 months later, i was in Pattaya again, ran into her, she remembered me and gave me the "oh so happy to see you tilac i missed you" swoon...took her out of the bar...back in my room, i found her lovemaking to be far more businesslike than before, and after we had finished, she told me she had to leave to see her friends (who were going to the disco to find guys). We hadn't discussed it, but if it had been at all like before, it would have been LT multiple days, etc...no biggie, i gave her 500 baht as it was now ST, and she basically threw a shit fit, saying that every guy was now paying her 1000ST/1500LT...i reminded her what i'd paid before, and she stormed out...obviously the gal had become jaded AND had gotten very used to punters paying her the higher prices..so in this case, that had driven up the prices...not to mention that it was low season, so market forces were not bearing much of anything.....
Another case in point, in Bangkok, even in low season with everyone complaining about the loss of tourists, no matter how hard one bargains on Sukhumvit, no matter how well one speaks Thai, the prices of goods on the street will ALWAYS be higher than the same goods bought in Ramkamhaeng or Bo Bae, or non tourist areas...the exact same goods...at the lowest price in Sukhumvit...still higher than anywhere else....this has absolutely nothing to do with supply and demand, it has to do with the fact that the locals know what the tourists will pay and thus they will charge them accordingly. Money changes people in a big way..i am a photographer, 5-10 years ago, i charged far less prices for my work than i do now, mainly because i was struggling to make it in the field and was also thrilled just to be able to sell. These days, i wont budge below certain prices, even if people are not buying, because a standard has been set that i am used to......
If i can offer any advice to those who are choosing to drop more money on the girls, do so if they make you really happy, but at least let them know you know the prices ("honey, i normally pay 1000 baht, but you are so damn great i'm going to give you 2000"), so that it doesn't go to their heads and they perhaps keep a good attitude and know what good service means.

That was indeed an excellent, comprehensive post - one of the best on the subject that I've read on ISG. One would think that such rationality would be enough to educate those who were, until reading it, mistaken (/ignorant) about how these markets work, but it won't. As I said before, this pointless debate will rage on forever here.

A few case in points:

1. Kim W. complains about this, and yet he also says he has no problem getting his 500 baht pussy. The market has not been ruined ('despite' many years of thousands of people paying many times higher than this). Q.E.D.

2. Kim's initial complaint stemmed from my comment, "I have plenty of money to burn", which was a stupid and arrogant-sounding comment (apologies), but I was really just replying to a question of whether or not I was paying enough. However, as stated in my posts, I was pretty much paying the normal rates. Point is that this is a ideological issue for people who don't WANT to understand how the market works ("don't confuse me with the facts"), and WANT to cling to a false notion that the market is somehow being ruined by others (the human psyche...we often tend to love blaming "them"), and therefore no amount of reason is going to change their views.

3. I've given numerous examples of different price points within the markets. We all know this is true, and it's nothing unique to this kind of market.

4. The idea that anyone thinks it's a self-respect issue (paying the "right" prices and thereby avoiding the girls thinking they are idiots, or whatever) is really funny to me. I think healthy self-respect is maintained in entirely different ways than resting it on what P4P girls think about my knowledge of and adherence to optimal pricing in their market is (ie I could care less what they think about what I pay, other than that I admit a propensity for avoiding being cheap...not that I don't bargain). But anyway, to each his own.

One final thing. As I pointed out before, if the Nick Leason-like belief that one can literally drive an entire market were actually true, then it would be in the GREAT INTEREST of people with money to overpay -- we'd simply be getting rid of a lot of the competition and thereby get better quality!

But obviously (or butt-obviously ;)), that's not how this works....since even if that were true the market would then quickly become over-supplied and thus prices would fall.

What may actually have not be contemplated before, and I think is interesting, is that overpaying actually does every monger a FAVOR in some ways - in that by doing so it creates the aura of possibility for the girls, which attracts workers. Imagine what Pattaya (or Thailand, or elsewhere) would be like if there were no hope that the girls could occasionally "hit the jackpot". As an analogy, Vegas works pretty much the same way (and for that matter, there's tons of cheap stuff in Vegas too - same supply and demand principles).

So if all the rational, logical points about economics 101 aren't compelling enough, perhaps this simple point will help compel other mongers to THANK those who "overpay" rather than unjustly castigate them :)

Central to the entire "ruining the scene" fallacy is the concept of overpayment. Before you can use a term like "overpay" or "underpay," there has to be a right price. If there isn't, how do you know you are overpaying? There must be a right price for you to know that there is a wrong price.

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of pages on punter boards have been devoted to discussions of the right price for S/T and L/T and there's no consensus. But for the sake of argument, let's assume it is the oft-cited 500 baht for S/T and 1,000 baht for L/T. Substitute other figures if you like, it doesn't matter.

But three questions do matter:

1) Who decided this was the right price for S/T and L/T?

2) When was this decision made?

3) Why should I care if someone pays more or less than I do?

Let's say they are right, and that overpaying CAN "spoil" a market. Then those of us who have the means have every motivation to overpay, because we're just reducing the market to fewer players, and that's better for us.

Point is, if the fallacy is true then they are actually motivating us to act in a way that would be detrimental to them. So if you really think those of us that "overpay" are ruining your market, you really ought to keep quiet about it!! Totally ironic, no?

But of course it's totally junk economics and the market doesn't work anything like that. In fact, as I explained before, "overpaying" (or paying more than the average customer might) actually helps everyone in the market, even those without the means to overpay, by attracting more girls to the market and creating the aura of possibility that ANY one of us could turn out to be their lottery ticket.

As is demonstrated here, those who disagree will complain about this to no end, ad hominem and ad naseum, no matter how much logic you give them to show their beliefs about how the market works are wrong. It serves a greater purpose to them than does reality.

And I live in China, so first class air ticket + Terrace Suite at Marriott for a couple weeks costs me around USD 5000. Those big spenders will have no affect on the market until the majority of punters start paying more. But there is never a majority of big spenders as long as supply is maintained. The more girls in the market, the less the average market price will be.

If it is easy for a pretty girl to get 2000 baht or more for ST, she’ll not likely agree to 1000, but she might accept 1500 if she likes the punter. If she finds it difficult to get 2000 frequently, she’ll start settling for less. The girls on Beach Road who find it difficult to attract a customer willing to give them 500 baht will start taking 400 baht or even less. That happens all the time. They NEED the money. We don’t need them. They need us. Their livelihoods depend on us.

Whether true or not, I believe it's irrelevant. The whole P4P thing is a fantasy for me (and for many others), and I enjoyed knowing that two great girls who provided very enthusiastic service could make an extra $30 (or more if you consider the ST v. LT factor, I suppose). I also gave them some drinks and food from my mini bar, which they did not even hint at asking for. I felt happy, and it's a nice memory of the trip.

Did I ruin the market with this behavior? Absolutely not. Were they definitely, beyond any doubt, honest? Well, they had zero reason to lie, but even if they were, and even if they thought I was a sucker, my point is who the hell cares?! I felt happy, and I'm sure they'd didn't NOT appreciate the extra money.

Btw, others have also suggested the "tip" strategy, and I agree with it. Pay more for job well done. I've done this many times in China and I have a veritable rolodex of reliables that will blow off other punters to see me whenever I call. That's service value I am willing to pay for. Meanwhile, my more budget conscious friends, or even those that just enjoy the thrill of negotiating, do absolutely just fine - simply because of the reality of supply, as Daddy07 so accurately pointed out.

Well, I suppose I do over pay sometimes, but that is still consistent with my favorite method of operation. When I spot a new beauty in a go-go bar, for example, I’ll pay her bar fine plus as much as 500 baht for a short time room on the bar premises in addition to the amount she agrees upon for her “fee” in order to test drive her for performance and GFE.

I think you made a few good points:
a) seems the fact somebody pays 1500 and not 1000 is a miney burner
b) seems the price has to stay at 1000 is a "religion" and a principle
c) seems a lot of people forgets that we are talking about a few bucks difference!

All I can offer in this post is some advice for married guys who want to play in Pattaya despite having family with them: Stay at Pattaya Park Beach Resort a few days - on the beachfront and slightly secluded - no go-go bars or beer bars in the street, just restaurants and Massage Parlours - but plenty of action within 5 minutes to central Pattaya. Lots to do at the resort to keep family busy and happy for a few hours, while you head off for a few hours occasionally to have some mongering fun. My excuse tomorrow will probably be a long massage - and I will be telling the truth (but not the whole truth. :D)

I sorted out the room-change problem at the resort today, plus got a further discount as a result. I'm such a sweet-talker. ;)

The resort is inexpensive (rooms from 1200), and some middle-aged western guys have obviously found that it's a great place to bring their young new Thai GFs for some fun on the water-slides, the enormous pool, rotating tower-top restaurant, monorail, and amusement park games. Some real cuties there.

So, I'm gonna adopt this new philosophy and encourage others to do the same. Let's pay 25% to 100% above the market rate, and let's report our results! I realize this will enrage some people here, but it's useful info and I'm not gonna hold onto it for the sake of being P.C. After all, the whole point of this forum is to share useful info.

I was told that police from Bangkok came down to enforce a 3am closure for all bars.

It really put a damper on things - especially if you like to stay out late. It only was to last 10 days and may be over now.

I think it comes down to 2 type of people here.

The Newbies or the ones that come down once every couple of years. If they see someone they really want, I think they would pay whatever price they can to get the girl because they will not have that chance again (at least not for a long time). 500 baht is a big deal for lots of thais too.

The sad thing also, is that Thai guys are overpaying too. Just have a look at the upper market prices, it's astounding!

This region of the world has prospered way too much and, tourists haven't helped prices by spoiling the Thais!

People often say this as if it is some kind of truism, but I think it works more like this: Paying more CAN (not always does, but can) create, for lack of a better word, loyalty or preferential treatment. For example, in China I often pay 1000 whereas most others haggle over a couple hundred RMB (usually paying around 700 to 800). Those girls specifically tell me they will go with me on call, anytime, and they do - whereas when they see the other guys that haggled they will avoid them unless/until they can't find me or someone else to pay them more.

There are about half a dozen girls in Bangkok that send me emails and text messages when I'm in China. When I land in Bangkok they will come right away, on demand.

It's great when I'm sitting around at home and message a girl and know she will come right over. That's worth the extra $20 or $30 or whatever to me. Heck, I pay much more of a premium than that in food delivery service each week :)

This is not theory - it's real experience. Since I have both overpaid and haggled, hundreds of times each, I have the experience to comment on this. I will caveat, however, that not all of this may be strictly due to overpaying...sometimes it's just not being cheap on other little things (giving the girl a drink from your hotel mini bar, or even just being generally decent to her). But I'm not going to deny that by far the biggest part of the reason is the overpay. And again, when that's a measly $20, and I value the service a lot more than that, it's simply in my best interest to do so.

And the girls tend to perform a bit better over time too in some ways. For example, they don't tend to want to bolt at strange hours and will pretty much stay with me for as long as I want and for as many pops as I want.

Personally, I have never grossly overpaid (sent allowances, paid for house or cars, etc.), but I agree that sounds like a pretty silly idea...though I'm sure people who do it have their reasons and it does something for them. And as I said, it is REALLY GOOD for the overall market, because it creates the aura that it's possible which attracts girls and probably improves performance as well.

On the other hand, I think there's some judgment call involved. There are times when I realize i'm not going to repeat, and those times I try to get the market price and stick there. Those include a lot of the massage places, short-time bars, and other "automatic"/establishment-type places. Performances there can often also be more perfunctory.

Anyway, so my advice is that if you want to make the girl a regular, overpay her 25% to 100% and you'll create some loyal service providers and get rid of some of the competition over those specific girls (ie not affect the market in general, but rather the micro-market that you care about).

An interesting thing in Thailand, however, is that there are a lot of girls that actually have their own preferences and will participate actively in the choosing process. Especially (it seemed to me) in Pattaya (in the discos). Therefore, if you are young and handsome you might naturally be able to pay less for a better looking girl than an older guy would. On the other hand, if you are an older guy (assuming average looking), you might be able to get any girl you want by offering a relatively small premium while the younger guys jerk her around over 500 or 1000 baht.
